Rise of the Tomb Raider Sequel's Name Might Have Leaked in a Weird Way

"Shadow of the Tomb Raider."

Rise of the Tomb Raider's sequel--which has been hinted at but not announced--might be called "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" and it's possible Crystal Dynamics won't be its developer.

This information comes from an unexpected source: a person on a subway. Reddit user Tripleh280 posted the picture below, which shows the name Shadow of the Tomb Raider on a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation for the game. There is more text on the slide, reportedly detailing some element of the game's visuals, but it's too blurry to make out.

No Caption Provided

Kotaku heard from a source today that Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the name of the next Tomb Raider. That Square Enix would make another Tomb Raider game is no surprise, but what stands out more is that the site claims Thief and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided developer Eidos Montreal is working on the unannounced game.

A Square Enix representative told GameSpot, "We don't comment on rumors and speculation."

At Gamescom 2015, Square Enix boss Phil Rogers let slip that a third game in the Tomb Raider franchise that began with the 2013 reboot was on the way. This came up when we asked him about the controversy and backlash surrounding Rise of the Tomb Raider's exclusivity deal with Xbox.

"We believe first and foremost this is the right thing to do with Tomb Raider right now," Rogers said about the deal with Microsoft. "What it's done for the sake of the studio and the next beat with the Tomb Raider trilogy [emphasis added]... But the backlash is--we've watched carefully and we believe it's the right thing to do."

In August this year, Crystal Dynamics hired Visceral Games veteran Ian Milham to become a game director for the Tomb Raider franchise, which furthered the suggestion that the studio was making a new Tomb Raider game. Crystal Dynamics is also working on a new IP.

Rise of the Tomb Raider finally came to the PlayStation 4 in September in the form of the 20 Year Celebration Edition.

It's actually a crossover with Shadow Of The Colossus and we'll finally get to have Lara take on some big things again (who can forget that T-Rex back in the day eh?)

... well it's nice to dream.

Oh god what an awful name, and I thought Rise of the Tomb Raider was bad. If this is the final game in the trilogy just call it "The Tomb Raider" it's more simple. Shadow of the Tomb Raider sound like a crap fan made game.

Also Eidos Montreal did some work on Rise of the Tomb Raider so they're not completely new to the franchise. But I hope that this part isn't true, I want Crystal Dynamics to finish the franchise they started - though a new IP from them would be welcome.

That is a horrible name for a Tomb Raider title. I hope this rumor is not true. As for Eidos making the game instead of Crystal Dynamics....well we'll see. Deus Ex MD had some really awsm level design.

Frankly, I prefer Tomb Raider's gameplay to Uncharted. Uncharted has the better story and characters, sure, but I found TR's overall controls and execution to be much tighter than Uncharted's.

But don't get me wrong. I view both games as weekend rentals. Good rentals, mind you.

Less blood and combat, more tomb raiding, please. I don't mind the action portions save for the fact that they seemed to outnumber the gun play by a good 4:1 ratio.

Really enjoy this rendition of Ms. Croft, so the character is solid. Just need to find a better balance with the gameplay.

@IIIMatricksIII: Needs to be more interesting Tomb Raiding though. The jumping/ledge shimmying puzzles have become so rote. There is no challenge. Just hold the direction stick in one direction and hope Lara doesn't spontaneously decide to jump in the wrong direction for some inexplicable reason (I think they added that just to make you think these sections are difficult).

@lim30041982: 2 million on xbox, 1 million on steam. It's done fine. Microsoft must've paid a pretty penny for exclusivity so that will have taken some pressure off pure sales.

@lim30041982: I regret buying it to be honest. Up to the final area, but after Uncharted it all just feels really mediocre and repetitive. It's way too similar to the first game.

I'd like a original PS1/Sega Saturn/PC type Tomb Raider with Rise of the Tomb Raider graphics. That would be so dope, because the originals were about exploration and trial and error. Tomb Raider 2 was amazing even though the Venice levels were a pain lol.

I really hope that there is more spelunking and less combat in the next part of this 'trilogy'. The combat needs to be there too but Tomb Raider was always about the exploration and discovery. I liked the tombs in Rise, much better than the single roomed tombs of the original reboot but I want to see something that makes me climb up to a high alcove to find what's there and then explore more for a solution to what was in that alcove. Or something similar!

Shadow of the Tomb Raider sounds a little strange to me as well. Is it referring to the darkness beneath or perhaps the dark side of Lara?

Fun game but I want more story focus more cutscenes. Gameplay is there sure they can tweak some things here and there but however about more story telling to go, more boss battles or iconic boss battles would be neat.

@Xylymphydyte: ha funny how every gamer these days say that. What is wrong with playing a game if it tells a story? Cant a game have both? I swear current gen there is no game that is memorable plot wise, witcher, bloodborne, souls, uncharted everyone drops these games as good stories but they arent memorable. Honestly the most recent worthy story telling games are God of War, metal gear (not 5), halo, heavy rain etc. but they are last gen. Devs these days arent moving the gaming industry forward if they neglect story too, if they want to make it move forward they should be adding both

Whatever the title, as long as it's Denuvo-laced, it'll be yet another game I'll play but not pay for. If they want my money, they need to stop with the n*zi software being slipped into it.

@ECH71: I've played several Denuvo games, and if it hadn't been for people mentioning it online, I would have never even known. Why is it then that you're so opposed to it?
It's just DRM like any other that's embedded into Steam, Origin, PSN or the Microsoft stores.

Maybe a spin off similar to Batman arkham origins while the big team works on the real sequel? Sounds about right in this day and age of milking franchises to the limit

This franchise is has like a phoenix. It rose from the ashes and has gotten better with every sequel. Looking forward to see how they optimize the power of Scorpio and PS4 Pro. I know the next installment will not be a timed exclusive. Exclusives should be left to in-house developers. These AAA developers need everyone to experience their greatness.

@mi_hung_lo: The franchise got modernized but that doesn't mean it got better. Sure, they improved the shooting mechanics, camera and character movement in the recent games, but that's expected. Certain gameplay elements did get streamlined or dumbed down though.

For instance, why is it another cover-based third-person shooter? Don't we have enough of those already (aka Uncharted)? They removed acrobatic maneuvers that could've mix things up for traversal and combat. Why does melee combat and executions consist of QTE's? Why is the platforming and traversal in an exploration game so heavily scripted? They even tacked-on stealth mechanics that makes the game unnecessarily easy (something I see in a lot of recent open-world games as well). Even the change in Lara Croft's attitude made her character boring and unlikable IMO.

No, what we have here is a typical modern shooter with little flavor of its own.

@ps3gamer1234: except that wasn't even part of his post and you're inserting words in his mouth. You do realize that makes his argument more credible if you can't actually argue against what he's really saying, don't you?

I wanted to like the new tomb raider and I enjoyed what they did with Lara's character, but their decision to make her a mass murdering Rambo was questionable. I also truly hated the QuickTime events and the scripted environmental hazards.

This game appeals to Uncharted fans, who really just want to watch a movie deep down inside. It wasn't for me and I won't be returning to the franchise.

@Richardthe3rd: I don't get this complaint, the new Tomb Raider games are still inherently Tomb Raider games, they're just more modern versions. The original games were amazing put the "puzzling" elements weren't so much hard to crack more that they were completely illogical, go get a key from the other side of the map that will open a door to another room on the other side of the level to pull a lever that opens a door to the end of the level. I miss these elements somewhat, but there's a reason people started turning away from the franchise on the original run.

Further the combat in the originals was absolutely atrocious, I'm glad they finally made a combat system that injects some fun into proceedings - there's just a bit too much of it.

The place the new games really shine is the exploration in the hub areas, it really has that old Tomb Raider feel to it, but with a modern twist. And I think Rise of the Tomb Raider really broke away from Uncharted - it was far more focused on exploration and less on corridor shooting galleries and the QTE's were virtually non-existent in it except for the first hour of the game. I think they're just about finding their groove in this franchise and I'm hopeful they can really nail it in a third game. It's miles better the Legend/Underworld games.
