Rock Band Survey Teases "New Rock Band Experience"

Survey asks what features would be most important to you for a new game, such as DLC and plastic instrument compatibility.

Rock Band developer Harmonix on Friday released a new survey that asks fans for feedback about a "new Rock Band experience." The survey, which Harmonix released via email blast and on Twitter, asks fans to give their thoughts on all manner of items related to what is probably Rock Band 4.

No Caption Provided

The survey starts off by asking which Rock Band games you've played in the past, and which you enjoyed the most. It also asks about console preferences, and things like what plastic instruments you already own, how often you played during peak times, how many DLC tracks you bought, and why you enjoy Rock Band.

But where things really get interesting is the third page, which asks players to rank the features they find most important for a "new Rock Band experience."

Options Include:

  • Fixed campaign mode
  • Competing with the world through leaderboards
  • Local multiplayer
  • Online multiplayer
  • A Variety of venues to play in
  • Regularly updated in-game events (Tour Challenges, Battle of the Bands, etc.)
  • The ability to create and customize your own character
  • Pro instruments and Pro lessons
  • Compatibility of existing DLC
  • New weekly DLC
  • Compatibility of existing hardware
  • A large on-disc soundtrack

The survey also asks, assuming the "new Rock Band experience" was compatible with existing hardware, if you would consider buying the game only, the game bundled with one instrument, or the game bundled with a full set of instruments.

Finally, the survey asks if you'd be inclined to preorder a new Rock Band game no matter what or only if Harmonix tossed in bonuses like songs or character outfits.

This survey should not be taken as an indication that Harmonix is indeed working on Rock Band 4. In fact, the Cambridge, Mass.-based developer has said that the game is not in development, even though the studio has "grand plans" to revive the franchise some day for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

A Harmonix representative told GameSpot today about the survey: "From time to time, it's important for us to reach out directly to our audience to see what they're most interested in and excited about."

"As we've said in the past, this is a series that is near and dear to us as a studio," the developer went on. "We're always thinking about it, as well as actively supporting the community. What the plans for the future are remain to be seen, but feedback from our fans is always valuable; we appreciate folks taking time out to let us know what they’re thinking."

Harmonix communications manager Nick Chester said in October that Rock Band will return "when the time is right."

"We love Rock Band, it's in the company's DNA," Chester said at the time. "We own the IP. And when the time's right we will absolutely come back to it. There's a whole bunch of factors to take into consideration before jumping in that pool again, but there's a desire for it, absolutely."

The most recent Rock Band game was Rock Band Blitz, which was released in 2012 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Just this week, Harmonix launched the first new DLC tracks for Rock Band in 21 months.

I only sung I couldn't afford the instruments. I hope the old toy stuff would still work but they should tweek it to use real ones. What I'd want is that HUGE playlist I bought so I don't have to completely start over again. Course going from 360 to PS4 no way to prove I purchased the license sighhhh.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I wouldn't worry about it too much. I assume they will do it similarly to Rocksmith in that you only need to have the games listed on your Gamertag/PSN ID listed as played and all your DLC/Song Imports from other games will show as purchased on your account too.

I think enough people would have made it clear that a new generation Rock Band title must have cross generation compatibility with both software and hardware that its going to be a huge focus for the new game. The only thing to worry about really is how much work it's going to take for all of that stuff to be re-licensed to new gen. I hope it's easier than it sounds.

Can you use professional electronic drums with this game? Smthg like we can use real guitars with Rocksmith.

It'd be great to utilise digital mapping with Kinnect cam to record a music video for showing off later. I wonder how possible that could be...

One more thing I will stick to my Xbox 360 until you make Rock Band compatible to Xbox one.

Harmonix taking out the competitive edge of Rock Band 2 was a huge mistake in my opinion. Rock Band 3's tour mode was less than desirable. Just a suggestion.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I agree and it's one of the many things I didn't like as much about it as I did with Rock Band 2. Overall I think 2 was a much better game and I would probably still be playing it on a regular basis if it wasn't for new dlc incompatibilities.

Would love 6 or 7 frets on the guitar. And I like the Guitar Hero drum kit much much better. With 2 cymbals, 3 pads and a kick pedal. Would love those things in a new game

Where's the option for more guitar/bass buttons? I'd love a jump from 5 frets to 7.

If Harmonix actually goes through and does most of the things on their survey, it would only further cement that fact that these guys are a top tier developer.

As if we really needed this as proof.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That literally has NOTHING to do with why these games died...It was because Activision felt the need to release 5 or 6 guitar hero games in a year, most of which either weren't BC with older versions or crap that nobody wanted i.e. Van Halen for example.....At least Harmonix didn't feel the need to crap out a Rock Band every 3-6 months and were always BC

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They would have been better off selling the game in more specific music collections. Ten albums of ten supergroups wouldn't be over saturated if gamers only bought the albums they love, leaving those they don't.

Personally I'd love a fully Kiss themed edition to rock out to...

Just filled this out. I know I'm probably in the minority here but I still love Rock Band and would be very excited about a new entry. My buddies and I actually just played last Sunday for about seven hours straight.

Filled it out. Too bad I couldn't add the fact that they need more hip/hop but a new Rock Band is badly needed.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Exactly! Why would you want to play hip/hop songs or any of that stuff with a freaking guitar? Not enough of these artists use these instruments for it to make any sense whatsoever. Think about what the game is called for a minute and what it's about, then ask your self it it makes sense.

Egads, NO on the hip hop - we need something interesting to play. And the game is called ROCK Band after all.

But I really have no problem with it being released as DLC at a later date, just means I'll save some money that week for something actually good in the future (LOL). I'm just hopeful they can finally get that stick out of Jimmy Page's bum so we can finally play some Zeppelin. And now that Activision's licensing on Van Halen, Metallica and The Eagles has expired perhaps we will see them in the new game when it is released (or as DLC later).
