Rocket League 2 Is Unlikely, As Dev Focusing On Games-As-A-Service Instead

"I don't know what I'd do with Rocket League 2."

Rocket League has been one of gaming's biggest success stories of the past few years. Launched in July 2015, the game has 45 million registered players by developer Psyonix's latest count, with between 6 million and 7 million people playing every month. Given the game's huge success, you might be wondering if a sequel is coming. It's not, at least not anytime soon, according to game director Scott Rudi.

Rudi, who joined Psyonix earlier this year, told GameSpot in an interview that the studio is focused on treating Rocket League like a platform. The studio is pouring resources into supporting the game with new content instead of making a full-on sequel.

Now Playing: Rocket League 2 Is Unlikely, As Dev Focusing On Games-As-A-Service Instead - GS News Update

No Caption Provided

"That's preferable to do; games-as-a-service," Rudi said. "The most valuable thing in our game is our fans. A lot of the stuff we do is focused on keeping them with us. Keeping them interested and all hyped up about our game. We want to provide a really good experience [for players] to have fun with for years to come."

He added: "We want to keep this going. I don't know what I'd do with Rocket League 2. I'd rather do more to expand the existing Rocket League. It's doing great, there is a lot ahead of it. So yeah, we have no plans for Rocket League 2."

Rudi's comments match up with what Psyonix executive Jeremy Dunham said in March 2017. At the time, he said, "Why would we want to take this huge community that we've already built, that's still growing, and say, 'What you're playing now is going to be irrelevant in 12 months, but we want you to stop what you're doing, giving us money all over again, and move over to this other game." Dunham said that way of thinking in games is coming to an end.

As it relates to ongoing support for Rocket League, Psyonix is kicking off a third anniversary event on July 9. This will introduce a new 3v3 Anniversary playlist and a Happy Birthday topper to collect, among other things. Additionally, Psyonix recently announced a Rocket Pass offering that you can buy to unlock new content over time. It is part of Psyonix's ongoing effort to keep people in the game and having a fun time.

Another part of what keeps players coming back to Rocket League is the new licensed cars that you can buy. Just recently, Psyonix released the Jurassic World Jeep, while previously launched licensed content has included vehicles like the Batmobile and the DeLorean time machine from Back to the Future. Rudi told GameSpot that you can expect even more licensed cars for Rocket League in the future.

As with games like Fortnite and others, the extra content you can buy with real money in Rocket League is cosmetic only in nature and does not impact gameplay. This is important because it keeps the playing field level, Rudi said.

"Monetising or adding systems that would imbalance that is not right for us," he said. "I'm sure for other games it makes sense, but for us, it's not just what we're about," Rudi said. "We want to keep it pure, keep it clean, and let player skill and teamwork rule the day."

Rocket League originally launched in July 2015 for PS4 and PC, before coming to Xbox One in 2016, and then to Nintendo Switch in 2017.

This game should’ve been F2P from the get go because that’s what it is. “You’ve earned a loot box! Want to open it? Buy this key!”

They say they don’t force you to buy anything but it’s constantly up in your face so that if you don’t you feel like you’re missing out. It’s beyond annoying and I regret paying any money for it on the Xbox. Would not buy a sequel and will not play it anymore.

Come at me Psyonix employees.

Why would there be a second game? its good for the gamers that the company builds upon this game. We dont need to buy it each time again and again like the COD games, which i dont buy by the way.

I wish more games would go this route so we dont have to buy a new update each time, yes a new update not a new installment, COD again.

I would like a competitor to make a Rocket League type game and improve upon it since these guys are content sticking with the current game. Mostly, I would like a new Rocket League to have hitboxes on the cars that represent the actual car shape. Pretty much right now there is a huge disparity between the car shape and most hitboxes. The Octane for example is narrow and lower in the front and broad and higher in the back, yet plays like the car is a giant loaf of bread. It's beyond annoying and the main reason so many people use that one car due to its over generously sized hitbox that doesn't even fit the car. If all the cars had strengths and weaknesses that were based on the actual car shape and performance, it would make the game a lot more fun and better to master since you could predict your ball contact a lot better based on the car model.

One of the few games out there where boxes, $2.99 skins and the words "Games as a service" doesn't bother me. Sometimes this is the right business model -- I think we can (almost) all agree it's when a game trys to go full retail that it starts to fall apart.

@djwood84: But why not earn the skins through challenges instead of overpaying for it? Would give people more of a reason to play and keep coming back to unlock more stuff.

@alucardswrath: I do agree with that -- aside from things like the Batmobile and Jurassic Park jeep, you can earn most anything during the events by simply playing. I don't like loot boxes but when the game is built around a solid foundation like Rocket League, it doesn't hurt things near as much as say... Battlefront 2.

For people that complain about the crates and stuff which don't affect gameplay, you can even turn them off under the options.

They should've said prolonged support instead of games as a service.

Rocket League doesn't need a sequel to iterate; they can just tweak the core game - plus there's always the danger that trying to make a completely new game breaks what people love about the original - as long as people are playing then why bother? You can, as they are, make money from people who want to pay for the cosmetics and everyone else just carries on as normal.

@mariokart64fan: So you're saying Psyonix should never have made "Rocket League," which is the sequel to "Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars"?

@mrdinghat: It’s how games as a service should be.... you pay once and have access to the whole game. Then they release event and such and you can buy premium items that offer zero competitive advantage to make the money to keep producing free content for all....

@mrdinghat: That’s the way the game launched - nothing has changed. You’re triggered by a thread’s title?

@redhedjack: nobody is forcing you to pay for new cars, its changes nothing. I'm glad they aren't forcing me to buy a new game every year. I didn't want the batmobile, so I didnt buy it.
