Rockstar Shut Down GTA Online, Red Dead 2 Servers Today To Honor George Floyd

Rockstar Games temporarily made both Red Dead Online and GTA Online inaccessible in order to honor the slain George Floyd today.

Rockstar Games temporarily shut down access to the online modes of its biggest games--GTA V's Grand Theft Auto Online and Red Dead Redemption 2's Red Dead Online--today for a period of two hours to show support for Black Lives Matter and to honor the slain George Floyd.

The servers for both games are now back online but were down from 11 AM PT until 1 PM PT. You can see the message posted in Red Dead Redemption 2 below; when GameSpot checked, we did not see any equivalent notice in GTA.

In addition to the gesture, Rockstar asked its Twitter followers to find a charity they can donate to in order to show support for black communities, businesses, and civil rights. Charities on the list include the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, National Black Child Development Institute, and the Equal Justice Initiative, as well as broader civil rights groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation.

Rockstar is the latest game company to show support for the Black Lives Matter movement, either through words, actions, or direct donations. Sony recently delayed its June 4 PS5 presentation in order to respect the ongoing protests, and in-game events for other multiplayer titles have been postponed, as well. I think we're too caught up on race, it goes beyond that. I see the casual nature of those cops and wonder why they think it's ok to conduct an arrest in that manner? How could possibly think it's acceptable to kneel on a man's neck for 8 minutes? This kind of force is used everywhere against whoever they feel like using it against, it doesn't take much. This cop had 18 complaints filed against him, why is he still a cop? Why is he a cop in the 1st place? I don't know about anyone else but i know an asshole when see one.

There is a toxic culture around our criminal justice system and it doesnt start with cops, it ends with cops. And yes, racism is a big part of it. This country has passed legislation that targets black people since slavery ended and continues to do. That is systemic. that doesn't mean all cops are racist. It doesn't mean cops are told to target black people. What we see is an effect caused by the policies we put in place. And we can change that.

Institutional racism no longer exists in the US. The stats prove it. The fact is these communities are worse off now run by democrat leaders than they were when racism was embedded in law. The regressive left have created these conditions and blaming racism as the scapegoat to dress themselves up as the solution thus the term white privilege etc which actually ironically came from upper class whites lol. The self loathing and hate from the left is it's biggest weakness.

What's messed up is that I constantly see racism on chat whether I play GTA or Battlefield or whatever other online game. Too many racist people.

@TruSake: I also hear comments about other peoples nationality, gender, accent, anything they can try and grab to insult the other person. Gaming is full of sh*t talk, it's not any deeper than that.It is infantile to think what is happening with these protests is ANYTHING other than fanning the flames of hate and creating more division.

The stats state the facts, police brutality is not racist and institutional racism does not exist. You have the likes of Bob Woodson, an ex civil rights movement leader in the 60s call out these leftist thugs and BLM for what they are. The left is using identity politics to deflect the blame from their own failures in communities that are top to bottom run by democrats.

Where over the last several decades over 20 trillion dollars has been pumped into these communities and crime is higher now that it was when racism was embedded in US law and the KKK were hunting down blacks. The issues of the disadvantageous today mainly stem from the erosion of values that held these communities together in the past and the breakdown of the family and ego centric culture that has replaced it creating a more violent and chaotic environment. If people really care about black lives where are they with the issues that affect them the most, where are they when crime increases and gets worse?

This all is nothing more than virtue signalling by people who are caught up in the new social media trend while unfortunately the real issues won't get addressed because the people highlighting these issues on social media don't even fully understand them never-mind come up with a solution. They are more interested in sharing and liking some half edited viral video with a black heart beside it to let everyone know what a compassionate person they are. What we need is genuine love, not this virtue signalling divisive crap from the left

@Paddy345: Sure by why is it a entire culture of online white dudes using racism and prejudice names in order to insult people just for "shit talk". I'm sure you or someone else will try really hard to find that one black guy who does it, hispanic guy who does it and so forth. That's all good. But there isn't a culture of American minorities that actively do this. In nearly all cases its always some white dude. The question is why should this be the normal and considered "ok'?

@TruSake: And that's probably why games journalist and game studios are voicing it now, because racism stems from closed doors or behind cameras, it's only systematic when it's under the surface.

And given so many new generations of gamers who appear be it from what ever walks of life, they too will adopt anurysms of thoughts from other players who say foul racist shit, so I would assume this's to show light that you. Can hide and no abuse at work, or threats or harassment from violent law enforcement (because systematic means, deep rooted a culture of belief of superiority and deep dark nieve thinking that plagues the very foundations of society for no gain other then those beligerant enough to cause it by infecting others who were once not racist to thinking racism)built on decades of oppression.

So systemic racism starts somewhere and it incubates in places like online, and especially in video game online sessions.

So this is the reason why rockstar and other studios have opted in.

This is nothing more than virtue signalling. The likes of Rockstar and Sony could care less. They are using if for viral popularity, don't be so thick minded to bow down to this. Nothing more than radical left regressive nonsense. The left with it's rioting and anarchy has effectively ruined itself. Good job lads lol

R* could easily mod the characters skin color just for a day in RDO or GTAO -just like when they made in Christmas all map to appear snowed in RDO- to look all black in skin color, just to show the support they advocate while allowing the gamers to play their favorite games.... just saying....

I actually regret having to live through these times , as a hardcore gamer who grew up and played competitively along my dozens of years to have my access revoked as a paying customer because of "muh" racism all while promoting this barf inducing "virtue signalling" on all media outlets...

This is truly cancer and I don't want to even imagine what the future holds. Everyone that jumped on this SJW train needs to really evaluate their personal lives and be very ashamed for pushing this disgusting agenda even more especially to defend a convict/criminal/drug addict with over 11 criminal charges.

Absolutely shameful that we have to endure this even in our own virtual space of solitude , nothing is sacred anymore.

@off3nc3: All of that because you can't play a game for 1 day? Would you like Rockstar to prorate your 1 day loss on your $60 game? I think that would come out to about .164 cents if you say $60/364 days.

Would that make it all better for you?

@aross2004: Why should I be gagged by virtue signalling ? They are ony doing this to rake in more customers for the PS5 launch. If they want to get into politics and support world wide crimes they should start with the people living outside of the videogames.

Imagine being so privileged you can't go a few days without a few videos games while people fight for their equality and against their mistreatment. There are a lot of angry things people want to say, but they all lack one thing: empathy. Judging by so many of these comments, it seems people have a hard time putting themselves in other people's shoes. Maybe they should just refrain from saying things they know they shouldn't be saying and let people fight for the things they know are right.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Empathy is not sympathizing with one side of the issue. How about you put on that other shoe.

Shutting down a service your customers have paid for, for your own agenda aside. Put the shoe of a police officer in the street right now. Getting spit on, beat, cursed at, Blamed for an incident you had nothing to do with just because of the color of your skin and uniform. I mean if that was done to any other skin color then white imagine the outrage.

The entire assumption that this was a racially motivated crime is in itself racist. There is no evidence it was except the fact the officer was white. \

Put yourself in the shoes of someone that believes in the rule of law, And a bunch of companies joining a protest that is unjust that is protesting injustice. You know what we used to call a group of people out in the street screaming demands before the justice system has had time to work? A lynch mob.

I have alot of experience in grief and loss. And i can tell you in most instances the ones voicing their empathy are full of it and could care less. It is the people that say nothing and leave you alone that have true empathy.

@gaeandilth: Most of what you mention is the same BS talked about every time something like this happens. The same old excuses.

"What about the cops?!" The cops can take off the uniform. There are no 'blue lives', there are people who put on a uniform as part of their job, they face danger and death as part of their job, and if they don't want those things to be apart of their life, they can find another job. That is not the same as having to wear your race on your skin day in and day out, and I think you damn well know that.

"What about the businesses?!" While I do not agree with the rioting, I recognize it as a natural reaction to people's anger. Maybe if the entire country worked harder on improving things, we wouldn't have riots. You also know what would have prevented this? Arresting all four of the officers, something that actually did happen, immediately after the incident took place. That's ALL that had to happen. This needs to be a lesson about what happens now when injustices occurs and it needs to be a call for change. If we don't want our cities to burn, maybe we should try to be better as a society.

As for white people and their troubles, sorry, I have zero empathy for the majority who don't have to worry about the daily troubles that people of color face. I'm not wealthy and I have my share of troubles, but I will never have to worry about getting killed by the cops for the color of my skin, I will never have to worry about facing racism just for how I look, I will never have to worry about whether or not my children are going to make it home, I will never have to worry about being accused of something just because of my skin color. Being white in America is a privilege because of all these things. Sure, white people have their own problems they face, and even with whatever racism they may face by a minority of the population in the U.S., it will never compare to the racism minorities face on a daily basis and which has been ingrained in this country since it's inception.

@Pierce_Sparrow: you may have white privilege but I sure as hell don't. Would love to have some though. Even if I did I would not apologize for it.

Would love for you to go out in real life and tell someone they are privileged and need to apologize for it too and see what happens.

And do not disrespect the US with your BS. America had racism at its inception because the WORLD DID. And the world still does it not a US only problem. If you truly believe that crap then why do you live here?

@gaeandilth: Oh the excuses and ignorance. Are you white? If so, then yes, you are privileged. Privileged not to be profiled. Privileged not to have race be factor when it comes to many things. Privileged to not have to wonder whether or not you're going to live or die just for doing every day things. Privileged to not have to wonder whether or not your children are going to make it home safely every day just because of the color of their skin.

Racism being a problem in the world doesn't matter when we have the ability to fix what's wrong here at home. We've known for centuries that racism is wrong, and yet it persists in the very fabric of our society. Even when slavery ended, which many knew was wrong even at the time, we still practiced racism. The US deserves what it dishes out. For as much as I love this country and all that it does well, there is still much it does wrong. We KNOW what is right and what is wrong, and we must put that into practice. No excuses, no placating, no ignorance. It is the responsibility of the entirety of our society to do the right thing.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Was in the army at 17 during operation desert shield do not try to tell me about fearing for my life because of the color of my skin.

I would be worried about my kids walking to school in a black neighborhood too is that my fault it is so dangerous? Do you think they more worried about a cop shooting or a gang member do I need to bring up more statistics?

Racism is real and always will be there is no magic that will get rid of it. That said there is also not as big as a problem as you are taught.

You and others are judging an entire race based on the actions of a few. That is the very definition of racism. So obviously WE don't know the difference between right and wrong.

@gaeandilth: What happened was accumulation of everything, the virus, the recession, racism, paranoia, distrust break down in society all at once.

That's a rare phenomenon that happens once every 100 years.

So why not fight for the good cause, all those good cops, all those of colour with out a voice marginalised, instead debating ethics do something about it, go out and speak for change rather idle on a gaming site.

@Pierce_Sparrow: I totally get it, and I agree that people being mad while all of this stuff is happening does make me feel sad about the world we live in, however, its a bullshit move, just a marketing stunt. What would it accomplish? They should have donated say 1 day of all their GTA/RDR2 online in-app purchases if they really cared, not this bullshit. Making people unable to play a game online only makes them hate the cause. How is blocking access to a game supposed to make people feel empathy? Donations don't necessarily support the cause but at least they can be used to support young people financially for college, etc.

@mohibeyki: It's a bullshit move because Rockstar wants to pause their games for one or a few days to take focus away from them? Maybe you could use the time you would use playing these games to learn something you didn't know about black history. Or to learn about black people's personal experience with law enforcement and why they're protesting or why BLM is important to them. There's a lot of things all these people bitching could be doing to better understand history they're probably not familiar with or understand people and their problems that they are so quick to dismiss. I mean, look at what people are complaining about? GTA stopped the online segment of their games temporarily. So f'ing what? I play Warzone with buddies practically everyday, but I wouldn't cry or get butt hurt if they shut down the servers for a couple of days to try and focus people's attention on issues happening.

For once, instead of complaining about people's escapes from reality, maybe people could actually shift their attention to these important issues and try to understand things they're so quick to call BS. Empathy isn't just about acknowledging people and their pain, it's about trying to understand it.

Things are getting interesting. Place your bets.
