Rockstar turmoil afflicting Max Payne 3's August launch?

Purported former Vancouver studio employee said alleged San Diego studio conditions are mirrored at Canada outfit; shooter sequel slated for late-summer debut, but delay likely.

What we heard: It appears as if Red Dead Redemption isn't the only title creating a strenuous work environment at Rockstar Games. Joystiq reports today that it has received word that a similar situation is unfolding at Max Payne 3 development house Rockstar Vancouver.

"Virtually everything said in the original 'Rockstar wives' letter and by current and former Rockstar San Diego employees in the comments applies to my experience at Rockstar Vancouver," a purported former employee at the studio told Joystiq. The studio is also reportedly in "enforced crunch mode through to the end of the project," necessitating "14 - 16 hour work days, six or seven days a week."

Max Payne 3 may, or may not, hit shelves in August.

The source also noted that Rockstar is targeting an August 2010 release for Max Payne 3, having delayed the game to late 2010 in December. The game was officially announced in March 2009 after having been first mentioned in March 2004.

"The game's story just went through another total re-write earlier this month (the third that I am aware of in the past two years) and that [means] the team would have to have all of the content done by April or May to make that August release date," he said.

The official story: Rockstar had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Given that the Independent Game Developers Association has offered to mediate in the quality-of-life concerns at Rockstar San Diego, it seems like there is some credence to the purported Vancouver employee's claims.

Max Payne 3 is the exact opposite of what a Max Payne should be like

I just don't get the new Max Payne 3 images. It is NOTHING short of a complete alteration. It's not even a frail attempt to "evolve" things but an actual blatant shift to a completely different character. I couldn't believe that that was Max.

Well, TBH, Max Payne has looked different in every game. Plus this one takes place, if I remember correctly, 10-12 years after the last game. Max's also been through a helluva lot (betrayal, murder of his family, new lover and best friend, etc.) so, him looking like a mess is pretty believable. Just hope they get things right.

Aw well, the main character don't even look like Payne..so how can anyone stay excited or care when they're taking the game in another direction? My brother who's a HUGE Max Payne fan, can't believe what they've done to the game. So I hope the delay is to inject some more Payne killers into this game because it needs it.

The whole company needs to get their **** together BEFORE they release any games. I don't need to say how craptastic this game will be if the development continues with how they say it is. The game getting rushed, overly worked developers probably doing the bare minimum, etc.

I agree with mf1986 - They can take another year or two if it's necessary, they just better not butcher the name of Max Payne with a crappy game...

i used to work in the game industry. when you get hired they tell you there's mandatory ot and if you can't work it you shouldn't take the job. these people new this was the way it was going to be and has always been in the video game industry. if you don't want to play games for a living someone else will.

Max Payne is my favorite game of all time, and unfortunate as it is, I am very close to giving up on this game until I get a solid release date.

@Jones_kyle I think you meant April 27 for RDR, not August 26. But, yeah, I'll be a little more than angry if something happens to Red Dead. A cancellation would be unthinkable.......

sad, these delays arent even for more polishing its because there are internal problems which them lead up to games just being canceled :( lets hope that doesnt happen to these 2 titles

This 'crunch mode hours' was the very reason I didn't pursue VG development... I feel sorry for those always in the 'crunch'.
