Rockstar's New PC Launcher Gives You A Free Game Before Red Dead 2 Arrives

GTA: San Andreas is a free limited-time offer when you download Rockstar's PC launcher.

Update: You may suddenly have an even better reason to download the Rockstar Games Launcher. Rockstar has announced Red Dead Redemption 2 is coming to PC in November. It will be available to pre-order first from the company's launcher first, and doing so will net you a variety of bonuses like story mode and Red Dead Online content. You can also claim two free games beyond the GTA: San Andreas freebie outlined below by pre-ordering Red Dead Redemption 2 between October 9 and October 22. If you'd prefer to shop elsewhere, pre-orders will go live on October 23 at places like the Epic Games Store and Humble Store. A Steam version will come later, releasing in December. A Google Stadia version of Red Dead 2 was also confirmed and releases as a launch title with the service in November. Check out our Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-order guide or the official press release from Rockstar Games for more info.

Now Playing: Rockstar Releases Its Own PC Launcher With A Free Game - GS News Update

The world of PC gaming has gotten a bit more crowded. Publisher Rockstar Games announced a new PC launcher, and downloading it nets you a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas for a limited time. You have until October 8 to claim your freebie.

The Rockstar Games Launcher is a one-stop-shop for everything Rockstar Games, from launching titles like L.A. Noire and Max Payne 3 to purchasing Shark Cards, Grand Theft Auto V's premium in-game currency. Rockstar's new PC launcher will feature cloud saves, automatic game updates, support for disc-based and digital games (even if they're bought from another storefront), and more. San Andreas is offered for free as a limited-time offer when you download the launcher, which is free to do as well. It's unclear how this launcher will impact Rockstar's games on Steam. It's also unclear if Red Dead Redemption 2 will debut on PC via the Rockstar Games Launcher.

Rockstar isn't the only video game publisher to dive into the PC launcher scene. Fortnite publisher Epic Games introduced the Epic Game Store in December 2018 and has quickly garnered both praise from developers regarding Epic's generous revenue split and complains from some gamers over Epic acquiring exclusives like Metro Exodus and Untitled Goose Game.

The company was accused of tax evasion earlier this summer. According to a report by investigative thinktank Tax Watch UK, the whole of Rockstar paid zero corporation tax in the UK from 2009 to 2018, despite Grand Theft Auto V reaching an estimated total $6 billion USD in its lifetime.

It's only a question of time before every PC game has its own website and its own launcher.

@ChrisAnetkaC: haha kind of true but i do get why they do it. Steam asks for too much money so i get why they decide to sell on their own platform

@eli150: True but I have no doubt they aren't the last ones to do this. Soon some company will come up with a generic yet customizable launcher for video games, sell it to all the game developers out there and this will really take off. Everyone will want to do the same thing. That will be the end of Steam.

@vexter77: I think that would be an extreme stance that would probably hurt more than it helps. Take for example a magazine. Advertising might offset the cost of a magazine, but not fully pay for every copy that gets shipped out. The magazine should be able to sell advertising space to third parties and also to the person buying a copy of the magazine. There shouldn't be a law that says it can only be one or the other and two parties can't share the cost.

There might should be a law that says the product being sold has to list up front if the cost is being shared with advertisers and whether it is skippable (like on a magazine page). That way people can decide if they want to put up with third party advertising and just not buy the product if it seems like too much hassle.

Such a not only clickbait title but a low order lie. The title should have read, "Download Rockstar's new launcher and get a free game...GTA: San Andreas for your troubles".

Fair enough, they pay for what they make. If they want to do their own launcher that's fine. GTA or Read Dead aren't some crowdfunded cult hits or third party games, nor is Rockstar pretending to be a messiah that will save the industry. Doesn't mean I'll download it though. Although trying to entice people with an ancient game? Really Rockstar? Can't spring for something even a little newer what with all the billions you've made off scamming kids with GTA$?

Also, piss off with that split bullshit with Epic. Has any developer, especially indie dev, ever cited the split as the reason for exclusivity? Only thing they ever cite and care about is the fat check Epic hands out. I'll also remind everyone Epic doesn't allow devs who refuse the exclusivity deals to even benefit from the split. So yeah, there's your goddamn saviour. If the split was the reason, we'd see Discord, itch.io et al. lead the way, but alas, they aren't in the business of buying PR blowjobs for thick stacks of cash.

This is what happens when Valve wants too much for its platform. Now everyone will break apart and have their own stores and launchers. Oh well. I don’t play PC anymore anyway, so won’t effect me.

@WarGreymon77: Discs for pc games? I thought those had been replaced by download codes a long time ago, due to Bluray never having established itself in the PC sector. Or are you only buying games that came out two decades ago?

This makes sense. They are big enough to do this and they don't want Valve to share the profits they are getting from all that GTA V money. That game is printing the company free money for the virtual toys people are willing to pay for instead of spending an insane amount of time to earn them. RDR 2 will sell boatloads of copies and I doubt the amount of people who won't use the rockstar launcher will offset the more money they will make not being on steam anymore.

@syntaxkt: It's probably very profitable for any publisher simply because they get to keep all the profits. Although Rockstar releases so few games, they won't have too much to offer on their platform.

I think that we can safely assume that Read Dead Redemption 2 will be sold exclusively at their store, but I'd much prefer this than having them making scummy deals with Epic Games in the future. I still can't see buying their games though if I can't use the features that the Steam store provides.

As of right now, its a no from me. It wont have anything on it for me to want it until GTA6 comes out, after all, i'm guessing GTA6 wont be on steam and if it is, it might be timed exclusive for a year or two until steam gets its hands on it.

This is why I went back to piracy for TV, and it's why I'll either go back to piracy, or not bother their games at all. Every EA game I've skipped because it's exclusive to Origin, I skip all Epic Game exclusives, and I'll probably skip Rockstar in the future too now.

I see no value in buying games over several stores, the whole point of Steam was to have everything in one easy to access place. I use gog as well because I will support buying games without DRM, I have them all saved on my Raid backup system. However I'm just not going to use several stores....

This is like going back to the days before Steam, where everything had it's own little launcher thing. However back then it was DRM free, and at worst you needed to just download a .exe crack. Now however it's all locked to a storefront, and you have to be online :/

@Terrorantula: Good thing you are using GOG as they are working on a way to merge all launchers and games into one and still keep all their features. Its a big endeavor but they understand the annoyance of having so many launchers and not one cohesive place to play your games together. Hopefully its successful as I plan to use it.

I hate all these developers doing this because it means you have to sign up for and download and install additional bloated software, which is mainly used to push more crap on you and tie you into their ecosystem, just to play their games going forward.

Yep RDR2 confirmed for PC.

PS: for the meatheads. PC gamers aren't complaining about another launcher, they are complaining about the practices of the company that owns said launcher. For example, buying third party exclusives and then forcing you to use its inferior service.

@daidochus: Uh...no, they're complaining about the extra launchers, too. Have you read the comments in this thread?

Most of them work in the background and hog resources and some of them are downright shady. Having a whole bunch of different launchers for every game means that many more background processes messing with your system. I've only ever had to deal with 3 at once and that alone was enough to muck things up enough to be noticeable.

@Barighm: And you can't disable them from working in the background? Any launcher I've ever installed had a setting for that. Maybe you should look through them if you don't want all of your installed launchers to start together with Windows. And this goes for all programs really.

@Atzenkiller: Yep. Pretty much all launchers can be disabled from running by default and all the time.

The thing I dislike about extra launchers is the unnecessary clutter it adds to everything. If you think about an old game, you now have to remember which launcher it exists in. For example Mass Effect 1, 2, 3, and Andromeda. Half on Steam and half only in Origin. Crysis 1,2 or 3 is that on Steam or Origin? Tomb Raider: Steam or Origin? These aren't problems that are impossible to deal with, it's just annoying to deal with. Annoying like if you had multiple password managers instead of just one.

Plus, you have to remember to close the launcher after exiting the game since it doesn't just close automatically.

@datameister: Didn't GOG's new launcher fix this problem? Letting you manage your whole library and all accounts from other platforms conveniently on their? And remembering to close the launcher after closing the game is such a basic thing. If you forget about that then you'd probably also forget to turn off your computer. Which is a different issue.

@Atzenkiller: I'm not sure about the GOG launcher. I haven't tried it since it isn't required.

Remembering to close the launcher is simply something that adds clutter. I launch a game from the Windows icon, but when I close the game the launcher stays running in the system tray. Or with Origin particularly, since I don't use it frequently it seems like every time I run a game the Origin launcher has to update.

Also, I basically never turn off the computer. It runs 24/7 and just goes to sleep on its own from time to time.

@datameister: Well, for me GOG's launcher always stays open anyway. It never seems to automatically minimize into the tray so forgetting to close it shouldn't be an issue. But you should be aware of what is running in your tray anyway. Disable Windows' option to group those up if you can't.

@Arkhalipso: I wouldn't go so far as saying they're happy about it, but EA, Ubisoft, Activision, and now Rockstar either made the games on their launchers in-house or completely paid for the development, so they can sell those games where ever and however they please. Wholly different to trying to deliberately destabilize the marketplace and create an actual monopoly while at the same time claiming to be saving the marketplace from an imagined monopoly.

I'm guessing there is a good chance that 2K games will come to this thing in future too. Makes sense like Ubisoft force people to buy it on the Epic Games store or get 100% of the profit when people buy the game on your launcher instead.

@gamingdevil800: Yeah, now that you mention it it seems weird that 2K didn't release its own launcher. Why let Rockstar have their own and leave all the other games 2K releases out of it? Seems like a very strange decision. But maybe it's just cause it's Rockstar, where people will buy their games anyway, no matter where and how they're released, for years to come.
