Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Review

Rebels with a cause.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens was more than just an entertaining new chapter in a long-running sci-fi series. After the lingering negativity that still surrounds the prequel trilogy, Force Awakens director JJ Abrams’ proved that Star Wars remained an audience-pleasing blockbuster property that could deliver both the nostalgic thrills that long-time fans were seeking and introduce a whole new generation to the universe. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is different. The first movie not to be part of the ongoing saga (discounting the woeful Ewok movies from the 1980s), Rogue One feels familiar yet different, and is a clear indication that Lucasfilm plans to take the franchise in some bold new directions.

By forgoing the main series' iconic opening crawl, director Gareth Edwards makes his intention to breakaway from Star Wars conventions clear. Rogue One is set before the events of A New Hope, at a time of turmoil for the galaxy. The Empire is developing a planet-destroying super-weapon they have called the Death Star, reluctantly aided by a scientist named Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen). The Rebel Alliance learn of this evil scheme via an Imperial defector, and with the help of Galen’s estranged daughter Jyn (Felicity Jones), set about trying to steal the plans that could lead to its destruction. It’s a simple set-up, and this is a story that fans have been waiting to see since 1977.

While Abrams was careful to gently reintroduce the Star Wars universe to audiences, Edwards has no such worry, plunging the audience directly into this new story. The densely-packed first 30 minutes involves a lot of character introductions, planet-hopping, and expositional dialogue, almost to the point that it’s hard to keep up.

There’s brave but cynical Jyn, Ben Mendelsohn’s angry Imperial Director Krennic, Diego Luna’s ruthless Rebel soldier Cassian Andor, and his faithful, reprogrammed Imperial droid K-2SO. As the mission continues, more memorable characters join the team--including martial arts superstar Donnie Yen as a blind stick-wielding monk. There are also appearances from a number of familiar characters from the previous movies. Some of these are simply amusing cameos, while others are more integral to the plot.

Once Rogue One hits its stride, it is executed with confidence and verve. There has been plenty written about the extensive reshoots that took place this summer, but unlike other recent movies that were reworked at the last minute (Fantastic Four, Suicide Squad), there is no evidence of a troubled production.

Edwards’ ability to combine practical effects with CGI and make a film that both slots in perfectly to the Star Wars timeline and delivers the sort of action set-pieces that modern audiences will expect is deeply impressive. The '70s haircuts and big buttons on various pieces of Death Star equipment give it a necessary continuity with Episode IV, without ever feeling gimmicky. But the scale of the action, in particular the climax, are at a level that could not have been achieved back in the late '70s. The "ground war" aspect that Edwards has previously spoken about makes the action feel grittier and more intense than anything we’ve seen before. But the film doesn't forget its roots and delivers perhaps the finest space battle sequence in the entire franchise. It's a dizzying showdown between the Rebel fleet and Imperial forces above the atmosphere of the tropical planet Scarif.

No Caption Provided

With so much going on, there isn't a massive amount of time for character development. Screenwriters Tony Gilroy and Chris Weitz paint in broad strokes, and more detail about some of the members of Jyn's team wouldn’t have gone amiss. But strong performances and genuine chemistry carry the film forward regardless, with Alan Tudyk’s deadpan performance as the plain-speaking K-2SO providing most of the laughs. There is also an impressive ambiguity about many of these characters--Andor might be a "good guy", but we see him perform some pretty indefensible acts to further the Rebel cause, and there is a powerful scene in which he talks about his violent past actions. Edwards never lets us forget that this is a war, and everyone has blood on their hands.

The film doesn't forget its roots and delivers perhaps the finest space battle sequence in the entire franchise.

Rogue One is a film made for established Star Wars fans, not for those that the filmmakers want to convert to the cause. By shedding much of the legacy that has built up over seven episodes, it focuses purely on telling a self-contained story and delivering thrilling set-pieces, rather than being a major part of an ongoing generation-spanning narrative . There’s no Obi-Wan, Yoda, Luke, or Han--but it has stars and wars and sometimes that’s all you need.

The GoodThe Bad

Great mix of CG and practical effects

The film moves too quickly at times
Darth Vader is back with a vengeanceSome of the characters are underwritten
Felicity Jones gives us another resourceful, charismatic heroDodgy digital effects used to render a couple of familiar human characters
The climactic battle scenes are truly spectacular
Adds extra depth to the events of Episode IV

Firmly of the opinion that there is no film that isn't improved by the addition of an exploding head or kung-fu zombie.

Really enjoyed it. I feel so blind to CG because I didn't notice it at all. Lucky me I guess.

Definitely agree about some characters being underwritten. In a movie like this, where you have so little time with so many characters it would have actually helped to be a bit longer and give people more time. Especially Cassian Andor.

I really loved the final act of this though, totally brought everything together for me and it felt huge and important (even though it was a relatively small battle). I felt real sadness as our team started going down. The only thing that didn't really click for me was the emotion between Cassian and Jyn.

I hope they release an extended cut with some additional character development.

I had so many issues with "The Force Awakens" that it'd take to long to list here. But based off the trailer for this film, I thought this might raise the bar for Star Wars films and embarrass the main entries of the series.

And oh, how it did! In spectacular fashion, this film had so much better characters, motivations, tie-ins, and the cinematography put J.J. Abrams to shame. I feel bad for Episode VIII to have to follow this in release order, and REALLY bad for The Force Awakens. Jyn was a MUCH better female protagonist than Rey... Daisy Ridley did a good job acting for the part, but Rey is written as an overpowered badass with no weaknesses. Jyn wasn't perfect by any stretch, and grows into the role of resistance fighter in steps that make sense while being vulnerable to blaster fire and explosions the entire time.

I can keep raving about the film but I can't without spoilers. Needless to say... I'll watch anything this director does for the rest of his career. This film was GREAT!

@zenogais176: i think we had a very similar experience, i found TFA as one of the worst movies they could have made in the SW universe, but this one in the other hand, this is a step in the right direction, not a 9 or 10 in my book but close!

This is an excellent movie much better than Force Awakens. It is not a children's movie, it is in fact a war movie. There is no goofiness, jokes are sparse, no Jar Jar Binks and other nonsense. There is no bouncing ships off the walls (looking at you JJ Abrams). Yeah physics actually exist in this movie and when a ship hits a wall it ends bad for the ship. People, good and bad, die. The story is great and well written unlike the simpleton conversation and plot from Force Awakens. The epic battle in the end is amazing both in space and on the ground. Oh and a few moments when Lord Vader goes all out Sith on the rebels are worth the ticket price just by themselves...

Bottom line a great movie, right there with the Empire Strikes Back. It is what Star Wars movie should be.

Pfft Disney who is run by leftists who supported Obamacare. Maybe they can (fire) have another couple thousand of their American employees train their foreign work visa replacements and to get out of Obamacare mandates, hypocrites they are. Then there is gay day at their overpriced parks. That's racist in itself. If they had a all white day the left would be up in arms. Nope F Disney.

Amazing movie, I am actually putting this at the top of my list for Star Wars movies, tied with episode 5.

"Dodgy digital effects used to render a couple of familiar human characters", I don't agree with this at all. That was some truly stellar CGI and someone I know that watched the movie with me, did not even realize they where until I told him after the movie had ended. Definitely the best looking CGI characters I have seen so far. I don't get how people can praise game graphics that is not even close to as good as this, but bash this amazing work.

Anyways, a truly amazing movie and a stellar Star Wars movie.

Watched it and it does actually provides a huge reason for a new hope but... Man the actors cant act for shits. Also underdeveloped character bound. other than the MC, everyone else with her day one have so little backstory for anyone to care. Even the op monk, the rebels, the robot etc is underdeveloped.

Spoiler alert.

Stromtrooper still can't seem to hit a target, I mean really? A fcking blind dude literally walking on the middle of a gunfight and you guys still can't hit him. I get that they want to make a joke scene about this but wtf.

@sakaixx: That moment was intended to be ambiguous-- was he wielding the force? Or were the stormtrooper's bad at shooting? Maybe both? Regardless... have you seen A New Hope? Because stormtroopers miss all the god damn time.

@rob_handlery: i know it was intended like the force was probably helping but man.. There is just a limit on how much bullshit is allowed you know, the monk did not even had a lightsaber to protect himself and he kinda moving very slowly.

Also the main target since most other rebels were dead at that scene.

@sakaixx: hahaha you realise it's a movie about aliens, space ships, lasers, interstellar travel, man made moons with enough destructive power to blow up entire planets right? Yet you find the lack of accuracy b/s when the whole premise of this series is utter garbage made up about space fantasy. Don't get me wrong I love the series and this movie, but parts of it or even all of it you have to take with a grain of salt and just move along. Accuracy (clearly storm troopers lack it) cost the empire dearly hahahaha.

@sakaixx: Just to refresh your memory: C-3PO and R2-D2 walk across a hallway in the opening moments of A New Hope, threading between constant blaster fire coming from BOTH directions. Both are moving slowly. Neither are hit.

I love Star Wars, and I loved this newest addition possibly as much as ESB. But a healthy suspension of disbelief is required when watching these movies.

I have no desire to see this. Don't care about retrieving Death Star plans or lil' miss pouty-face that I'm supposed to think is a bad ass. In the old movies, Han and Luke and Chewie would run from a storm trooper.. there was something... Idk .. BELIEVABLE about that. It gave the story something to relate to.. because I'd run too! .. now apparently 100lbs of girl power is all that is needed. "I Rebel!" ... Jesus.

It was a decent Star Wars movie and definitely leaps and bounds above what you see in the movies these days. It's biggest problem is that it knows it's not an essential movie, so it doesn't detract from the series iconic moments and instead shows that the rebels have been formulating for a while. I'm glad it wasn't abnoxiously tied in like the prequels, but this feels like a better tie in prequel to the originals. Some people aren't going to like that. This movie was not as good as the force awakens and not nearly as memorable or enjoyable, simply can't compete with the flare of those characters. Donnie Yen is easily the best character throughout, but didn't get enough screen time.
