Russia Is Reportedly Making Two Video Game Consoles

They apparently won't be as powerful as the PS5 and Xbox.

Russia is looking to enter the video game console space by creating its own systems, and the country is reportedly planning on making two different kinds as it continues to feel the economic impact of its illegal invasion of Ukraine.

According to TechSpot, one of them is reportedly a traditional console using the Elbrus processor, which is developed by the Moscow Center of SPARC Technologies. This processor is mainly used for applications such as critical infrastructure and defense. It's also reportedly going to use a domestic OS--either Aurora or Alt Linux.

In a statement on Telegram, deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on information policy Anton Gorelkin confirmed that Elbrus processors aren't as powerful as the ones used in PS5 or Xbox, so Russia will have to take a unique approach to its consoles.

He also said that it won't be designed to play ports of older games, but serve as a platform to encourage domestic video game development.

The second console is reportedly a cloud-based one built by the Russian telecommunications firm MTS and will cost $45. It will reportedly utilize MTS' Fog Play--its cloud-based gaming platform that lets owners of high-end PCs to charge an hourly price to those with less powerful machines.

As Russia has been sanctioned due to its invasion of Ukraine, the government is looking to promote more domestic technology. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin initiated the government to create its own video game consoles, and Microsoft has said that Russia has been infiltrating the gaming community.

Sony and XBox spent decades in R&D, huge resources were devoted to their console and software development. Comparing their efforts with a government sanctioned project in Russia is not justified.

Even if they can bring out a very basic console that can play games developed in Russia, I would say its a major success and yet another massive middle finger to the misplaced, gross scale sanctions imposed by the so called "western allies" of Ukraine.

While I do not justify the Russian invasion, I also do not agree with how blatantly western powers sided with Ukraine only to give them hope that "someday" they will get in to NATO.

In this whole conflict, the only loser is Ukraine.

Can't imagine there are all that many "Made in Russia" tags on household goods anywhere except Russia. Lots of natural resources and energy but not that many home electronics or other household items coming out of Russia. China and India are their largest importers. China has too many restrictions on video games but India is probably the largest gaming market in the world and they don't care if they help fund illegal wars and terrorism. Not sure if too many big game developers would want the PR nightmare that might come with making video game ports for a console made in Russia.

Are there stages of denial like there are for grief? If so, what stage of denial has you making your own videogame console?

Lawlski. The Elbrus-8S is 10 years old and was very weak even then. The newer version, the Elbrus-8SV, is about 4-5 years old and can barely play western/asian games from 10 years ago, forget newer games. There is supposedly an Elbrus-16C in the works, but that's years and years behind schedule, and at this point anyone working on it would have been sent off to die on the Ukranian front lines anyhow. So yes, you will need a 'unique approach', thankfully retro is back in!

Most of these vaporware console(s) would still have to be Chinese parts - and they will absolutely need Chinese help to make them, since Pooty Poot's kleptocracy can't actually make anything any more, even has to beg help from Best Korea. Maybe you can get them to write your games?

Honestly, the whole sanctions for Russia thing is kind of a mixed bag, on the one hand, a lot of big-name name-brand products like game consoles for example are very much destroying the Russian economy massively. On the other hand, this has led to a whole bunch of smaller companies from other countries like India, China, and any other country that isn't super close to The US or NATO to fill in the gaps. Pretty much it's like shifting your weight from one side to the other.

@illegal_peanut: Yes, but the side you've shifted your weight to is not of the same quality. 20 years from now? Maybe. But the Eastern games industry is underdeveloped.
