Ryan Reynolds Watched Green Lantern For The First Time And Actually Liked It

Reynolds starred in the 2011 superhero flop and had avoided watching it until this week.

Actor Ryan Reynolds sat down to watch his much-maligned superhero movie Green Lantern for the first time, and got a pleasant surprise. It turns out the film isn't nearly as bad he thought it might be.

Reynolds starred in Green Lantern back in 2011, two years before DC relaunched its superhero universe with Man of Steel. The film was met by bad reviews and disappointing box office, and plans for a sequel were cancelled. Of course, Reynolds soon found superhero success in the Deadpool movies--but he had never actually seen that earlier film. With Zack Snyder's new version of the equally-criticised Justice League releasing this week, Reynolds decided it was time.

The star provided a running commentary of the movie as he sat and watched--while also plugging his gin brand, Aviation Gin. Many of Reynolds' tweets were gently mocking of his performance, picking on the difficulty of acting "while being attacked by invisible space energy" and his use of the "Christian Bale superhero voice." But he also praised co-stars Angela Bassett and Stanley Tucci, and said how much he missed the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

Reynolds saved the biggest surprise for last--he actually quite liked Green Lantern. "Maybe it's the Aviation Gin talking, but Green Lantern was nothing to fear," he tweeted. "Hundreds of incredible crew and cast members did amazing work--and while it's not perfect, it ain't a tragedy. Next time I won't wait a decade to watch."

In related news, Snyder this week revealed that Reynolds almost had a cameo in Justice League. As fans know, there are several Green Lanterns, and at one point Snyder was considering including the character and featuring Reynolds as a second Lantern. "There was another idea I had for the Green Lantern that wasn't Ryan," he said. "I thought if we had gone down this path of Green Lantern, I would have had to have Ryan as the additional lantern."

As for Deadpool 3, in January Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige stated that the script for the film is being worked on. This will be the first Deadpool movie since Disney bought Fox's entertainment assets in 2019, and Feige has confirmed that it will both be R-rated and part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Did he watch the theatrical cut or the director's cut? Makes a big difference which version you watch. Director's cut is better.
