Saints Row Launch Didn't Go To Plan, Embracer CEO Still Confident It Will Turn Profit

"I'm confident we will make money on the investment."

Developer Volition's Saints Row reboot launched at the end of August, but the game didn't make the kind of splash that parent company Embracer Group might have wanted. CEO Lars Wingefors said during the company's annual general meeting that he wished the game had a "greater reception," according to Eurogamer.

He added that the reception to the new Saints Row was "polarized." Wingefors added: "There are a lot of things that could be said and details around it. I'm happy to see a lot of gamers and fans happy. At the same time I'm a bit sad to see fans also not happy,."

The new Saints Row had some bugs and other issues at launch, and Wingefors said there are fixes and patches coming. In the end, Wingefors believes the new Saints Row will be a money-maker.

"I'm confident we will make money on the investment. Would it have [been] as great a return of investment that we have seen in many other games? Not very likely, but we will make money and that's a good starting point," he said.

As for whether or not the cool reception to the new Saints Row could impact the future of the series, Wingefors said he always wants each new entry in a series to be more successful than the last. This might not always be possible, but Wingefors said, "What you do is... evaluate your position, the outcome ... and there [are] hundreds of people engaged in this game in the group... I still have a great trust in those people, and I am sure they will recommend things for the future."

The new Saints Row might not have had the strongest start, but it still was the No. 2 best-selling game overall in the US during August behind Madden NFL 23.

Of course they want to convince investors it's not a total flop, this statement isn't for gamers who couldn't care less if the game is profitable, they just want it to be good - and even without bugs it sounds like the story is trash. Like some Boomer hopped on Twitter and TikTok for a week and thought they had an idea on what Gen-Z liked.

Saints Row was great when it was like GTA but goofy, the online multiplayer was goofy and fun, I never got into the new ones.

"Saints Row Launch Didn't Go To Plan"

Kinda the understatement of the year.

It would be easy to trash talk this like so many others however, the backbone of the game is there, a beautiful environment, some good ideas, a patch to make the visuals this gen and some interesting side missions would lift this, crouch or cover fire option.

Iron out the bugs that really do embarrass the devs (in this era of gaming), we expect some but not what we got.

Drop the price tag, i paid full whack for this and the installation time was longer than my play time!!!

It just feels, plays and looks ps2 era

Shame, as ive said it could be great

@itchyflop: In this era of gaming bugs must not embarrass devs because they're so incredibly common.

@Barighm: the are indeed.

This has some making the game unplayable.

Have you played it?

I think, well i was disappointed by the whole game, it feels very dated and looks it, some of it shines occasionally.

Marry this with the vast bugs and its just not worth installing.

I mean the one bug meant you couldn't physically finish the game boss!!!

As I've said we expect SOME bugs, I don't think returnal embarrassed the devs or Elden ring?

EDIT : i will say this, as we all know cyberpunk released on consoles a broken mess and the devs have fixed that right up now, lets hope the saints devs do the same, it is and could be the GTA clone were could all be enjoying whilst we wait for GTA VI, imagine what kudos the saints game and devs would get if they managed to patch it up before the next rockstar hit releases, wede also get some gaming heaven while we wait!!

I really wanted it to be good, but just so many bugs. I had ones that kept me from progressing on top of many that would just keep me from ever getting the plat trophy. I hoped that would be a priority with fixes, but it seems not.

Wow, they really think there is a long-term market for a woke hipster Saint's Row game. I wish the devs luck (they're going to need it). BTW, SR2 (with the Gentlemen of the Row mod) is still the best SR.

@teshammutna: All cast is a person of color, centered around Gen Z'ers trying to pay off student loans? Even the voice actors are all people of color. The game has a latinx vibe. I'm hispanic I can't call myself Latino because Im not from latin america, but my first language is Spanish latinx in itself is an incredibly racist term the left came up with to bundle us all into the same race group which we are not.

Need I continue? We don't need representation, we just want a damn good game, we want escapism not politics injected into our games, specially not gender and identity politics.

@skritch: Exactly why lefties will never understand. I love San Andreas, it still probably my favorite GTA so far. But back then when you had a person of color as a protagonist it was not done to virtue signal or the wrong reasons like now a days.

@teshammutna: you got snowflakes throwing that term around alot lately and they don't even know what they are even TRYING to state. They are repeating stuff they heard on fox news or read in an Ann Coulter book. Basically blowing something WAY out of proportion. A bunch of mindless followers. Saints row has always had a wierd story based around some fake type of gang, same as this SR game... nothing more, nothing less.

@teshammutna: From the devs: “We love [the old Saints Row games], but we also recognize those are games of a time. They made sense within that era, and we were able to do things that felt good back then. But that tone is not something that we feel like we want to do today. We had a different kind of story that we wanted to tell.”

The story itself of course is a thinly veiled criticism of capitalism, waffling on about student loans which is something that is entirely voluntary (i.e. complaining your $100K college debt for social studies isn't getting you any jobs). No one in the US is holding a gun to your head and forcing you to take on debt you can't repay.

That said, even with that setup a great non-woke plot thread that would be in the spirit of the previous games, would be if the Saints blew up the universities/colleges and banks that ripped them off for useless tertiary education. Pretty sure that doesn't happen in this game, but something that could easily have happened in SR2.

@skritch: Well, there are scholarships for the best and brightest (even in the most prestigious universities), so if you are truly gifted, you will get your free education. That said, there seem to be more scholarships given to those who are good at sports (despite being dumb as bricks). Ripe material to gratuitously exploit in a good Saint's Row game, which this isn't.

Well, that’s the problem: It shouldn’t be thinly veiled. It should be shouted from the rooftops, from every street corner, from every electronic screen: unbridled capitalism is a dead end.

@zmanbarzel: Im not sure capitalism itself is the issue, its corruption ... when corporations have the same rights as individuals and lobbyists for those corporations have direct access to the decision making politicians (and their wallets), that is bad ... not the fact that corporations exist and can compete with each other in a free marketplace

The TikTok Starbucks SJW Zoomer Hipters didn't buy the game😱😱😱

Nobody wants to play your shitty hister trash. If you spend years developing such shit, you should make it a Starbucks exclusive, because outside of one, nobody want to play your garbage game.

And he is a fool if he thinks that he will make money on this pathetic video game. Everybody has already forgotten about it, imagine how it'll be in a month from now. This is literally Babylon's Fall 2.0, so cancel sales and apologize to your fans.

Quick everybody.. show him how wrong he is, and how out of touch they all are.

I hope he never sees profitability out of what they did to this franchise and how they launched this game.

Maybe then the rest of 'em will learn

@shadow6323: The mindset of the people creating media these days is that if the fans don't like it they are a racist or a phobe and that gets them out of having to reevaluate why their product failed (Star Wars, LOTR, etc.). Those people won't change. The best hope is the shareholders get p*ssed and fire the people responsible.

@teshammutna: Most of them aren't complaining because they're racist though, it's because it's not LOTR lore. That's why most are upset. The same fans watch Game of Thrones and The Witcher and there's no "toxic fans" being called out for their shows because they follow the lore, and the shows are actually well written.

Question is,

How long after release will it take to "still make a profit"?!

Any game or movie can be profitable years or decades after release...

The trick is to become profitable in less time than it took to make the content.

I liked the original first and second game. Every game after were to goofy and try hard comical for my taste.

They were aiming for a target group that doesn't exist. Hipster-gangster wannabees

And the Woke segment of the player base they were aiming for didnt even care, too busy on the Twitter Crusade to play video games.

And don't let me start on the bugs and overall drap game.

@daidochus: so saints row reboot is suffering what Hollywood has been suffering? They said videogames wouldn't suffer that. Guess it took a big launch suffering so devs learn from it.
