Saints Row: The Third Platinum Edition, preorder pack detailed

Volition's action game getting top-tier bundle with soundtrack and headphones; Professor Genki Hyper-Ordinary in-game item compilation for those who reserve.

No Caption Provided The zany, action-filled world of Saints Row: The Third doesn't open its doors until November 15, but publisher THQ is priming the release with news today of a Platinum Edition and preorder pack for the game.

The Saints Row: The Third Platinum Edition (pictured below) will include a copy of the game, the game's soundtrack, a Saints Row-themed headset, and all items included in the Professor Genki Hyper-Ordinary pack. THQ did not announce a price for the Platinum Pack, but specialty retailer GameStop suggests it will cost $100.

The Professor Genki Hyper-Ordinary pack--free to those who preorder the game at unannounced retailers--includes an array of in-game items. These include Professor Genki's Super Ballistic Man-a-pult, Professor Genki's "Octopuss" Cannon, and Professor Genki's Leisure Stunt Suit.

Additionally, THQ noted that the first 3,000 gamers to purchase Saints Row: The Third through its online store will score the Saints Row Season Pass, which includes three downloadable mission packs. THQ estimates the value of the Season Pass at $20, and it did not note if it will become publicly available at any time.

@Icehearted For me FF12 was a bad buy on my part. I knew going in that it was pretty much going to be like every other Final Fantasy game, but I still bought it. As for DA 2, the only thing I hated about it was the repeat dungeons. I never grew up playing PC games so when DAO came around the only thing I knew about it was how slow the action felt. DA 2 was an improvement for me on the battlefield. Although the Prince DLC was a bunch of BS. It's one thing to have DLC come out a few months after a game is released, but to have a something like that available on release day is unforgivable.

@cdog21 Fair enough, but how about Dragon Age 2 or Final Fantasy XII? I seem to see a lot of remorse buyers with the 3DS as well. Pre-orders are a bad idea, but software companies generate advertising, hype, sales, etc by convincing people (to my amazement) to pay full price or more for a game that has no reviews, no demo, nothing available but a lot of hype and awards that make no sense. Duke Nukem Forever even snagged some awards about 10 years ago, and the things was far away from finished at that time. I see no harm in waiting to buy, especially in a market were refunds are almost always non-existent. As for those exclusives, they're usually nothing to get excited about.

@icehearted True, but then again we already have an idea about what kind of game Saints 3 will be. Duke has been MIA for the better part of 20 years so a game style change would have been expected, but not to such a disappointing degree.

If nothing else, Duke Nukem Forever proved once and for all that pre-orders are for suckers. Also, retailer exclusivity? Really? Good f*****g grief.

@WIIDan7: Same here, but even if it is Gamestop exclusive, I'd rather buy from Amazon. Gamestop needs to die already...

@weskeni20: Well said! It's fine to compare the experiences, but not in some kind of angry fanboy sense. Each game could take elements of the other to heart, but we're all happier with them having very different hearts and souls; that's the point!

I just need to put stop to this comparing this GTA with SR...I mean you cant compared them... GTA is Realistic and has a really good story in many ways it will always be superior to SR and plus that franchise practically gave birth to SR... SR started out as a clone and another Sand box game influenced on gans... But SR stoped beeing linear and got its own style... and its fans cuz its Ridiculiosly FUN... and has sense of humor gta has it to but this is a whole new diferent spark of funny... Soo in conclusion there are the Oposite One Realisitic and Superior the other one not Realistic but really fun... People saying GTAIV was boring i mean common TERRIFIC Game and SR2 marked a new era for the franchise cuz i mean with got to be honest here first one sucked...

Wait, hang on... Okay, a brief disclaimer: I fully intend on pre-ordering this game and buying it first day. I loved the hell out of Saints Row 2 and this looks like more of the same, only turned up to 11. That said...I'm a little miffed that the people-cannon - showcased in their E3 demo reel - is only through a pre-order. Now, I could be wrong and the pre-order item is just a different kind of cannon, but it still seems odd. Why showcase this extremely fun item, but then only limit it to people that pre-order it or have it as a DLC purchase later down the road?

@nocoolnamejim: I agree! GTA IV for instance, was graphically impressive and the city was vibrant. The game itself was a step backwards however, and felt kind of pedestrian. On the other hand SRII took the gonzo vibe from the first game and went wild with it. It's not what I want from every game, but it works on Saint's Row; they understand the true purpose of a sandbox is to play wildly. I think GTA skimped on the tools for the sandbox and focused on making high quality sand... SR is more interested in giving you a tiny motorized shovel and damn the grit.

Saints Row 2 was a better game than GTA 4 for a simple reason. It was more fun to play. GTA4 seemed too much like a chore. Saints Row 2 was just a blast.

I always love rampaging in gta, but in 4 it just wasnt as fun a it was in previous games, now SR on the other hand encourages it and i love it. like you play GTA for story then you play SR to kick people in the nuts.

Kudos for tossing in an actual soundtrack CD, but whose bright idea was making the headset unusable with XBL? From the image: "Headset not compatible with XBox LIVE. For use with 3.5mm audio input and smartphone devices only."

GTA has kind of grown up from its GTA III era. Still a good franchise though, but SR takes everything GTA has done to a whole new level of hilarity.

@Frame_Dragger That's actually what I like the most about Saint's Row. It's pretty lacking in pretentiousness. It knows that it's a GTA clone, but a VERY GOOD one, and it's actually filling a bit of the space that GTA has left behind recently. Has anyone noticed that GTA has gotten just a touch tamer than it used to be? Saint's Row goes to the territory that GTA has discretely backed off from. Doesn't mean that I don't love both of them to death. But Saints Row isn't that kind of game that has "classic" written all over it.

@nocoolnamejim: I'd have to agree, and Saints Row never tries to be that kind of game. Fun, yes, but not a work of art... except in the strict legal sense I suppose.

$100 is a little steep. I like special editions and extra swag, but I'm thinking I'll pass on this. I think TRULY special editions (as opposed to some limited editions) should be reserved for the truly ELITE titles that are going to stand the test of time to be among the best games of all time. Games where we'll look back and consider to be benchmarks for the industry. I loved the first two Saints Row games and play on preordering The Third for day-one play, but let's be real here. What's the upper-end ceiling for how prominent this game is? Ten years from now are we going to be looking back on it with the same sense of awe as names like Starcraft, Knights of the Old Republic, Fallout 1+2, etc. Games that became true, all-time classics? My guess is that we will not. So for me, a game like this is worth a $60 purchase. It's maybe worth a $70 purchase for a "limited" edition. But this gamer isn't shelling out $100 for a crappy headset and a soundtrack.

SR 3 looks good, the headphones look like something you could actually use compared to other "limited/collectors/platinum" editions but $100 is a bit much.
