Samba de Amigo Update

Sega shows off more of the Wii Remote revival of its classic rhythm game.

Sega recently showed off an updated version of the Wii incarnation of Samba de Amigo, the classic maraca-peripheral-powered rhythm game that grooved its way through arcades and the Dreamcast back in the late '90s. The game is being developed by Texan developer Gearbox Games of Brothers in Arms fame. While Gearbox may not be the obvious choice to update a Japanese rhythm game, the US developer is showing off a whole other facet of itself with the conversion. The updated version on display at Sega's event showed off the progress made since the last time we saw it.

The updated demo featured a new menu interface and brief tutorial focused around an island setting. A hut surrounded by palm trees was our first stop when entering the game. You'll set up a profile, which will be tied to a Mii. As part of the profile you'll be asked to pick what control type you want, two remotes or a remote and Nunchuk, as well as be run through a brief tutorial if it's your first time in the game. Once that's done you'll go to the main menu with various game types such as quickplay, classic, Love Love (a mode that tests your compatibility with another player based on how you all play together), and minigames.

We caught a peek at the song list, which featured a bunch of tunes from the original game as well as "Bamboleo" from the Gypsy Kings. Once we hopped into a game we got a look at another one of the stages in the game, a TV studio complete with a boisterous studio audience complete with Miis, eager to dance along with main character Amigo. The game handled better thanks to a tighter control setup since we last saw it. You still have to be a bit more precise for some of the gesturing in hustle mode and posing than we're used to, but it's not too hard to adjust to it.

The visuals in the game were coming along fine. The loopy art design and eye-popping color palette give the game a unique look that still has a quirky charm. There were a few odd bits here and there with lighting and color that stood up, but they were obviously work-in-progress rough spots.

Based on what we played, Samba de Amigo is shaping up nicely. The gameplay is making a good transition to the Wii and the visuals are retaining their charm. Little touches like the maraca's shaking sounds that come out of the Wii Remote are good to have, although we surely hope there will be some kind of maraca sleeve out for the game. Samba de Amigo is slated to ship this August for the Wii.

To the person who said it looks like a kiddie game ... waaaaay of the mark! I still have my Dreamcast and Samba De Amigo (Pal) with the original Sega maracas and Samba De Amigo v2000 (sequel; japanese import only) and it was the only game I knew then that pulled in non-gamers in the same way that the Wii does now. Its appeal is across the whole age range and it is as much fun to watch as it was too play. Its a game that regularly I pull out for friends as we always have a blast on it. I was like you and couldn't understand the fuss but I plumped for it at over 100 GBP for the whole setup and I am so glad I did. Its good to see it coming to the Wii and hopefully the conversion will be flawless to capture the spirit of the original. Though I am hoping that they include the maracas as the sound they make with the game was part of the charm. EZ AR

Everytime the Samba de Amigo stage comes up on Sega Superstars Tennis, I always have to turn the volume up. Makes me want to play Samba even more! And I completely agree with a new Ulala adventure. Space Channel 5 needs to make a comeback! Hopefully, without Michael Jackson this time....

Looks like a lot of fun :) I'm more interested in Sonic Unleashed. Can't wait to see a Sonic game that lives up to Sonic 3 & Knuckles!

Never played any of the predecessors of the franchise (were there ever more than one?) but if this seems to shape up nicely for the Wii, I'd spend a few € to get my hands on it.

Same situation here Desert Claw. I think the same went for a lot of gamers that moved on to the original PS.

I had a Dreamcast I wanted that game, But I traded my Dreamcast for some PS2 Games at the time.Stupid Me. I'm glad it's coming to wii. NickFury I also agree there should be Space Channel 5 game too. If your looking for a game with those classics in it you should pick up Sega Superstars Tennis.I kbnow it's tennis but it's got some of those levels in it. But I can't wait till August to buy this game for the Wii

Oh yeah! I gotta get my groove on! *does the Mexican Hat Dance while mariachi trumpet music plays in the background* Seriously though, it's a good thing Sega is bringing back a timeless Dreamcast classic with the help of Gearbox. I have a feeling this game is going to turn out just fine and perfect for the Wii.

August release date confirmed again! Fantastic! Gearbox still has a few more months at its disposal, so hopefully it can polish the game up and ship it out bug-free. The new screens look amazing, and I'm pleased that the look continues to be retained and improved upon from the original games. Thanks for the update, GameSpot! ^_^
