Scarlett Johansson Black Widow Standalone Movie Is Closer To Happening, Finds A Writer

Marvel taps Jac Schaeffer to write the unannounced movie, apparently.

A standalone Black Widow movie that will star Scarlett Johansson in the leading role has taken its next step toward becoming a reality. While the movie is unconfirmed and unannounced, Variety reports that Marvel has found a writer for it: Jac Schaeffer.

According to the report, which cites unnamed sources, the Black Widow movie is only in the "very early" development stages. Importantly, Marvel has not even given the greenlight yet. Marvel president Kevin Feige reportedly met with "several" writers before signing Schaeffer, though the names of the others were not disclosed. The conversations between Feige and the prospective writers reportedly focused on what story they wanted to tell. Schaeffer's was apparently the best, or the one that Feige liked the most.

You might not know Schaeffer by name but she has some impressive accomplishments to her name. She wrote the script for the a comedy called The Shower in which aliens invade Earth during a baby shower. Oscar winning actress Anne Hathaway will star in the film. Schaeffer is writing the script for Nasty Women, a female-focused spin on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels that will also star Hathaway. Additionally, Schaeffer wrote, directed, and produced the 2009 movie TiMER as her theatrical debut.

There has been much discussion about a standalone Black Widow movie for some time now. In October 2016, Johansson said time might not be on her side. "If I did it, I'd have to do it while I still actually wanted to wear a skin-tight catsuit," she explained. "I don't know how much longer that's going to be." In 2017, Johansson said she had already spoken to Feige about the movie and that the initial discussions were positive. What's been keeping the movie from happening is the timing and schedules for Marvel and Johansson's other projects.

Johansson played Black Widow most recently in 2016's Captain America: Civil War. She's also going to be in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War. Do you want to see a Black Widow movie? Let us know in the comments below!

Dunno how I feel about this one. I love Marvel movies, but Black Widow just kinda seems like the most boring character out of the bunch, to me anyways.

Would have preferred they gave Hulk another movie of his own, rather than having him share all his screentime with the other movies.

Im sure any movie about Black Widow will have to include time wasting flahbacks to justify her purpose. She is the only marvel character on film (and Clint Barton) that has plenty of screen time yet just showed up one day already established.

That's great news. Been looking forward to a Black Widow movie ever since The Winter Soldier. Some people say that that Scarlett isn't a good lead actress but she's very likely gonna be accompanied by another Avenger or two as co-stars anyway. The character has potential for a great, more grounded story, and I think if they keep to more realistic stuff and less aliens/gods stuff, it could end up as a really good movie.

What little they showed of her origin in Age of Ultron was interesting IMO. It's been a long time coming, but I do agree it may have happened too late.

I think they may have waited too long. There's been a string of female assassin movies that are coming out that Widow may suffer a little from fatigue. We just had Atomic Blonde, we're getting Proud Mary and Red Sparrow soon.

Not really interested in a stand alone black widow, but I guess we'll see.

ScarJo just isn't a leading lady. Hasn't nearly every movie in which she played the lead, bombed?

Also, Black Widow has always been more of a support character than a main. Guess those two are a perfect fit for each other.
