Warwickshire-based publisher Codemasters has announced today that it's handing sales and distribution duties over to Sony Computer Entertainment Europe for the upcoming launch of Colin McRae: Dirt 2 on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable in PAL territories, with the exception of Spain, Australia, and New Zealand.

Codemasters will continue to distribute the game on the Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS, and PC and confirmed to GameSpot UK that Atari will be distributing Dirt 2 in the two southern nations, while existing US distributor Warner Bros. will handle those duties stateside. This isn't the first time SCEE has taken over the distribution duties of a third-party title, with Atari granting Sony an exclusive four-month distribution deal for Ghostbusters: The Video Game on the PS3 earlier this year.

According to a statement issued today, "The arrangement sees SCEE performing sales and distribution for both the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and PlayStation Portable system editions of the much anticipated off-road racing game." According to Codemasters, the combined download figures for the demo on both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are close to reaching the one million mark.

When asked to clarify why Codemasters had reached this decision, a spokesperson told GameSpot UK that the agreement "Represents an opportunity for a great partnership with the platform holder throughout its PAL network, especially at a time when Dirt 2's launch coincides with the release window for the new PS3 console." While Dirt 2's launch might complement Sony's PS3 strategy, it may face some stiff competition from Sony's internal studios when it comes to the PSP, with MotorStorm Arctic Edge and Gran Turismo to be released in the UK on September 18 and September 25, respectively.

Despite reports that it has already gone on sale in North America, the new PS3 Slim is due to launch on September 1 in the US and UK, with the rest of Europe following on September 3. Dirt 2 will be released on the PS3, PSP, Xbox 360, and Nintendo Wii and DS in the UK on September 11; Europe on September 10; and North America on September 8. As previously reported by GameSpot, Codemasters has reconfirmed that the PC version in on track for a December release, in order to take advantage of DirectX 11 support.

Personally I think I'd prefer split-screen multiplayer to online any day. I find with most games I get my posterior handed to me on a plate when I play online because I don't have the time to put in the hours and hours of play-time needed to compete. Whereas with a split-screen multiplayer I can just lord over my mates any time I like!

Invictuslemming - good question. From my discussions with developers the trend seems to be that many of them offer online multiplayer instead of split-screen, and that by developing a split-screen mode they would have to divert resources from other development responsibilities (ie. they'd sarcfice something else to squeeze that feature in). It's definately frustrating when you want to have a few races with your flatmate hey?

from playing the demo i think this will be a huge improvement on the original the cars have more weight this time around and dont feel like ducks on a frozen lake, although the physics are sort of whacky i managed to do a barrel roll off a rock on my first run of morocco, land and keep on driving like nothing happened

The rally games outof the Colin McRae series are definately part of the better racing games out there. Good to see all platforms will be able to distribute this game for all to enjoy.

I used to love the Colin McRae series on the original xbox... So I grabbed dirt when it came out. While the game looks amazing and I'm sure the sequel will too, its lacking one of the things that made the earlier versions awesome, split screen mode (not even 2 player is available, whats that about?) My friends would play the game for hours. What ever happened to the "next gen consoles are so powerful everything will be able to handle split screen." Its so hard to find a decent split screen racing game (or any split screen game for that matter). As fun as playing online is, I'd like my console to have a bit of use when there's more than one person around at the same time, I mean I have the option of connecting 4 controllers so why not support it?

enoslives.... why would sony see their own console as an enemy? The PS2 makes them money as well, so why is it an enemy?

That would be nice to see it ported to PS2. Unfortunately, Sony now looks at the PS2 as an enemy, since it eats into potential PS3 money.

Yes but this GT5, it's supposed to have something like 1,600 cars/upgrades. It used to be bad with damage visuals but they added on to that. So back to my previous comment.

gran turismo has never been good for drifting, jumping, or rally racing for some reason to me... I do own GT1, GT2, and GT4, and GT5P but 2 and 4 only have rallying but you slide too much..

Cmon now how many ppl would have dx11. Instead it would make sense to launch it early and then launch a patch for dx 11 if needed. Was that so really hard codemasters i mean i relly wanted to play dirt 2. :(
