School Bomb Threats Resulted From Minecraft Feud

Maybe take your video game feud a little less seriously, guys, k?

A Minecraft rivalry was the impetus behind a massive bomb hoax in the UK, impacting hundreds of schools and forcing some to evacuate. It was all a failed attempt to force a rival server to be shut down for abuse.

Sky News reports that the 24,000 threatening emails were spoofed to appear as if they'd come from a Minecraft server called VeltPvP. Velt operators say their opponents in the rivalry have harassed them with illegal activities, of which this is the latest example. Carson Kallen, Velt's chief executive, said he's been frequently swatted--the dangerous practice of falsely reporting a crime-in-progress to send police to a person's home.

One of the hoaxers anonymously said it was "horrible" that their threats scared school children, and that he understood he could be arrested. He accused VeltPvP of their own chicanery, though, saying they had engaged in DDoS attacks against rival servers. Kallen called this accusation "completely false."

Thankfully no one was hurt, and police have assured the public it does not consider these to be "viable threats." The schools have been given additional security advice as well.

They should make fake bomb threats illegal, that way people don't make them.

First time I've heard of swatting in the UK. What is the UK equivalent to US Special Weapons and Tactics?

The punishment for abusing the internet should be a ban from all internet access.

@rk7p5: Police Special Operations, more commonly refereed to a Armed Response Unit.

@karloss01: Thanks, because SAS is an elite military part of the British army. I doubt they would send them out For SWAT type situations.

Well, slap me silly! I thought this was in the US again, but it was the UK this time. Anyway, the ones that did the bomb "joke" will get one hell of a fine, and a few days behind bars.

You can't joke with bombs, unless they're stink "bombs". But barely anyone mentions them now...

@moonco: wow thats really sad to hear, whats even more depressing is that a nine year old can even get hold of their parents gun, the lack of responsibility is sickening.

@moonco: "Give me that gamepad!"

"Nope!"

*Bang!*

"I finally have that gamepad!"

Result:Parents are traumatized, and kid will have some nasty feelings for the rest of his life, unless he's a major psychopath. Man, the US gives me the creeps more times than not...

@kaminobenimizu: Sad part is so many people will blame the video games when there were really two issues. 1) the kid needs a better upbringing to understand that guns shouldn't be used to fix the fact that you want something and 2)Why the hell did the parents put their guns in a place that was easily accessible to a child. Lock the guns up or don't have kids.

Honestly the US really needs to have a law where parents can be thrown in jail for allowing their guns to be easily accessible to children.

The perps should be beaten and fined heavily - at the very least. I'm talking like "now I have to live in a box" fined.

If they are going to act like children, they should be treated as such. Both rivaling sides should have their servers shut down. It's one thing to have what probably started out as a friendly competition go out of control, but to end up endangering children is sickening.

Games are supposed to relax and remove the stress of real life. They are a form of entertainment. I can't say what happened in this feud, but the entertainment aspect is obviously gone.
