Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Game Re-Releases In January

The beloved beat 'em up that accompanied the release of the 2010 Scott Pilgrim movie will be re-released in January.

Update: Creator Bryan Lee O'Malley has said that while Scott Pilgrim vs. The World re-releases on January 14, that date is only for the digital version of the game. A physical release date has yet to be nailed down, but O'Malley assured it'll come out "after digital."

Now Playing: Scott Pilgrim The Game Returns, Prince Of Persia Remake, Immortals Fenyx Rising | Save State

It's been a full decade since the raucous Scott Pilgrim vs. The World crashed onto silver screens to rave reviews and disappointing ticket sales. However, as many fans of the movie know well, the game based on the movie was quite successful in its own right, though it was delisted from online gaming services in 2014. Now, we finally have a date for the game's re-release, and it's January 14, 2021.

Ubisoft previously confirmed that a re-release of the game was in the works back in September, after original creator Bryan Lee O'Malley and the film's director Edgar Wright both publicly called for its restoration. The release date was shared on the official Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Facebook page, and the game was originally scheduled for holiday 2020.

This Complete Edition will be a remaster of the original game that includes both of its DLC packs, which added Knives Chau and Wallace Wells as playable characters. The game will cost $15, and will be available for PC, Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and Stadia.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is a love letter to old-school beat 'em ups, particularly the NES classic River City Ransom. Since the game's release, other River City-inspired beat 'em ups have been released, particularly the acclaimed River City Girls. The Scott Pilgrim game is also notable for its soundtrack, which was performed and composed by popular chiptune band Anamanaguchi.

I bought the game digitally on Xbox 360 back in 2010 but am unable to redownload it on Series X. That isn't very fair.

Seriously, give River City Girls a chance.
There are distinct differences, but it will absolutely scratch that itch while you wait for Jan 14th.
(It's on Game Pass at the moment too!)

@Sindroid: It's on sale on Xbox Live right now.

Though, this is probably because I have "Xbox Live Ultimate".

@Sindroid: Not only have I never seen it on sale, I recently read a thread about the game titled "Has this game EVER been on digital sale???"

But it's definitely fun. River City Ransom: Underground, too, but RCR:U is a bit obtuse at times, and you WILL get the snot kicked out of you until you level up and figure out which foods to eat to keep your stats up to where your level allows. RCG is easier in that regard: get a stat up the first time you eat a food, so if you just make sure to get 1 of everything for every shop you find, you'll be as strong as possible.

Either way, Kunio-Kun games are generally a blast, no matter who or where or when.

@bluestorm83: I can't find a 'concise' layout of the River City games. Wikipedia is so innundated with their original names I can barely tell what's going on.

Doesn't help so many of the ones from recent years seem to be stuck on handhelds, which kills their appeal in my eyes.

@skyhighgam3r: Don't worry, there's next to no continuity to them all. For instance: River City Ransom: Underground is an official Sequel to River City Ransom, but is COMPLETELY unrelated to Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, which is the Japanese version of River City Ransom. Furthermore, River City Girls is both a sequel to Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari, and River City Ransom, (and maybe even Double Dragon Neon? But that's okay, they were both created by the same guy...) But it's also almost a reboot of Downtown Nekketsu Monogatari/River City Ransom. Also, the ending is slightly different if you're playing it in English or in Japanese, to reflect the fact that the previous game that Kyoko and Misako featured in never came out in the west. And that's not even taking into consideration that originally, Riki was Kunio's rival, and now he's his best friend. Or that Original Misako was against everyone fighting, but then the next game that had a Misako in it, she was a playable character who could beat the hell out of everyone.

I've actually tracked my way through all of the Japanese Continuity, and it's not anything that they ever took seriously. So here's MY contuinity: Once upon a time, Kunio and Riki, from Nekketsu (River City Japan) beat up all the punks and brought peace to the city. Meanwhile, their identical American Cousins Alex and Ryan, from River City (Nekketsu USA) also beat up all the punks and brought peace to the city... USA. Then Kunio and Riki's girlfriends Misako and Kyoko beat up even MORE punks in Nekketsu, but things were peaceful for Alex and Ryan until the year 19XX, when there were again punks to beat up, with the help of a gang of youngsters who found themselves trapped in the basic plot of "The Warriors."

And there ya go. The basic relations between the Original US Game and it's Japanese Version to the two sequels that we officially got here.

@bluestorm83: I appreciate the response, but I meant more like... if I wanted to play all the beat 'em ups in the "Kunio-kun" series - it's a bit of a slog when looking at the full list of "Kunio-kun" titles to pickout:

1.) Which games are the beat 'em ups.
2.) Which games were localized.
3.) Which games need translations.
3a.) Which localized games have translations of the originals.
4.) Which platforms they are on.

I'm not too worried about continuity. It's more about cataloguing/collecting the entries in a given series, or in this case, a sub-set of the series.

As an aside, I will say I LOVED Super Dogeball Advance back in the day.

@skyhighgam3r: lol, I hear ya, man. Would be nice if they'd release an actual anthology of the older ones, or even one of those physical all-in-one consoles that seem to be regaining popularity. Don't make people have to sift and pick.

@bluestorm83: Agreed, I was super disappointed in that Double Dragon / Kunio-Kun pack they released a while back. It was like the start of a great idea that only got half-way executed.

GREAT! My PS3 bricked itself right after this game disappeared, which super blew, as I shelled out for 3 extra PS3 controllers so my cousins and brother could co-op it, as we were all River City Ransom fans, and this game is SO RCR. Gonna be a definite immediate buy for me. Maybe Switch for portability and definitely PC, too.
