Sea Of Thieves Day One Patch On Xbox And PC Is Not What You'd Expect

The Day One Patch will cost you a coin.

Sea of Thieves developer Rare is known for its sense of humor, and with its new game, it appears to be focusing more than ever on embracing its community. Those two things have come together to make for a special day one patch--which is not at all what you likely think.

It's customary for games in this day and age to receive large updates on day one that add essential features or make big changes or fixes. Rare has decided to poke fun at that and leverage the fact that it has a game where eyepatches are en vogue. As pictured in the image below players can now acquire a Day One Patch--an eyepatch with the number 1 on it. It can be purchased for one gold from the General Clothing shop from now until March 29.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Here's When Sea Of Thieves Servers Go Live, And More Info On That Day One Patch

This is a callback to an early suggestion from Reddit user Jefabell, who recently proposed this exact idea. Rare doesn't shy away from its inspiration either, as the item's description reads, "A message in a bottle from Jolly Jefabell washed ashore. Eyepatch makers read it and said, 'aye.'"

Sea of Thieves launches for Xbox One and PC on March 20; you can see when servers go online in our full rundown. Xbox Game Pass subscribers will receive full access to the game on launch day, while the game is being given away for free with Xbox One X purchases.

Sea of Zzz . . . MS really is setting Rare up to fail. This game obviously should have been delayed again and needed more time. The first month of a new game and how its reviewed initially is important. First they had to make kinect games, now they have to release a game before its ready. Shame . . .

I can't remember the last time I had as much genuine fun as I've had in this game. I really hope it lasts.

@ChiefReaver: I did in the beta at first then got bored, thought there was going to be much more content in the full game.. there isn’t, that initial magic runs out after the about the 15th chest. You’ll realise you’ve been playing this game most of your life, talking on the phone to your friends

The people at Rare "known for having a sense of humor" have been working at Playtonic Games for years now, not Rare currently.

This game is going to be huge. Fortnite is about to lose its crown pretty quickly.

@Bread_or_Decide: remember that Fortnite is bound to all platforms except the Switch now, I highly doubt SoT will top 10 million in a few months let alone 50 million lol

@sephirothswing: Even on all platforms it’s being outdone by SoT right now but it won’t last.

@freeryu: Oh I agree that it won’t last dude, the game is garbage ? I had a shitload of fun with the small amount of time I spent with SoT on both One X and PC but I doubt it’ll fetch over 20 million regulars, even PUBG doesn’t have 10 million yet ? still they’re all fairly enjoyable depending what you’re into, me personally really can’t get into Fortnite with the aim assist business and the building, I just wanna shoot fools ?

Rare was oppressed and censored by Soccer Mom Nintendo. Activision tried to buy them afterwards. Thankfully Microsoft came by. However Kinect was a mistake they did make some decent games. This is an example of Rare coming back. Too bad no more Conquer.

@downwithsony667: Rare made crappy games before and after the Nintendo era. Their only good games were DURING the Nintendo era.

Rare will definitely release a patch in my honor if I started posting on Reddit. The "offline mode" patch because Live is down all the time.

oh so this turns into the comments section where everyone talks about how Rare was good once but now sucks. The wonderful power of groupthink!

Anyway I think the eyepatch is a hilarious bit of fun. It's cool they listened to what people wanted, and gave them credit to boot.

@Ovirew: Hey everyone, I found the edgelord that thinks popular opinion is supported by herds of sheeple. So edgy and thought provoking. Much intelligence.

When you become an adult, maybe you will stop using words like "groupthink" as if you are smarter than most people.

@P00DGE: I don't think it's really fair for a bunch of people with negative opinions to come along and just rip on a game. Really edgy. Such bravery.

And yeah, sheeple do tend to follow popular opinion, and don't really think about things and form their own opinions. People are being called "inspirational" and "brave" for marching on guns now. I don't think it has much to do with bravery or standing up to oppression when you're already the vocal majority of an argument. It's more about drowning out the other side with sheer number and approval from the overlords.

@Ovirew: It is absolute fairness for people, anyone, to go online and voice their opinions. How is that unfair?

I used the word "sheeple" ironically, because I don't think sheeple actually exist. You used it seriously though. Understand, you aren't better than anyone else, or smarter than the "herd". Edgy teens (and unbalanced adults) tend to view most other people as inferior. If they don't know them, and don't agree with them, it suddenly becomes "they don't have rational thought and are just sheep". People, on the whole, are intelligent enough and have individual thoughts and good natures. Popular opinion is USUALLY right. Sorry, but that's just how it is. Nothing wrong with having an opposing opinion.

Oh, and yet another word to add to the list of arrogant terms to use: "overlords".

@P00DGE: In my original post I wasn't trying to sound better than anyone else, I was calling everyone else out because at that point, the only ones commenting were ppl who weren't even interested in the game, and only wanted to run down SoT or Rare as a company after the early 2000's. And negativity is contagious, and can divert people who are on the fence.

This whole thing is ironic to me because I'm not even super interested in Sea of Thieves. I have been thinking about buying the game, but I never saw it as being a bigger game than Crackdown 3 (which most other ppl on gs seemed to feel oppositely about.)

The funny thing is I saw the fun in this "day one patch" and wanted to give the game kudos. I also (moreso now that I've tried the game a bit in gamepass) saw that this is a game that marches to its own beat and doesn't hold players' hands, and appreciated that.

But what I was met with was more or less fanboyism from ppl who were never going to buy this game in the first place. Nobody was saying anything good about the game, ppl just want to crap all over the XBO, so I had to say something good about it.

@Ovirew: That is all fine. Just be wary of words like "groupthink" and "overrated" (you didn't use it, but it is another word I feel has relations to all this). When you use those words, it makes you come off as condescending towards others.

My experience has been that, if a lot of people generally go one way or the other (positive or negative), they tend to be right. Obviously, personal preference trumps that on an individual level, but it is a great indicator in most cases.

I believe most people actually praise something (or criticize) based on if they, as an individual, actually like it or not. Not based on what others say. ESPECIALLY online, where going against popular opinion is no big deal thanks to anonymity.

@Ovirew: Yeah, people love to hate things on the internet. I agree that's it's an amusing nod to a development norm. Sea of Thieves has a very lighthearted tone that makes people want to act like fools. I love it!
