Sea Of Thieves Is Microsoft's Fastest-Selling New IP On Xbox One

Rare's pirate game is already off to a strong start.

It's been a little over a week since Sea of Thieves launched for Xbox One and PC. While it hasn't been completely smooth sailing for the ambitious pirate game so far due to some early server and performance issues, the title is already proving to be a success for Microsoft.

In addition to topping the UK sales chart in its first week on the market, developer Rare revealed that Sea of Thieves is Microsoft's fastest-selling new IP this generation. Moreover, the game has already achieved an impressive milestone, surpassing two million players only a few days after it managed to reach one million in its first 48 hours. That doesn't necessarily mean the game has sold two million copies, however, as it is also free to play for Xbox Game Pass subscribers.

Now Playing: GS News Update: Sea Of Thieves Seeing "Unprecedented" Demand, Passes 1 Million Players

"We've also been blown away by how the game has bought players together," Rare said in a thank-you message to fans. "More than half of a million new Xbox Live friendships have been forged to date and over 400,000 players have joined an Xbox Club to find pirates to share stories with.

"We know the response has led to some scale challenges and exposed some bugs we have addressed and will continue to address. Please know that the team at Rare is working hard to tackle any player-impacting issues and this is our number one priority."

Rare deployed Sea of Thieves' first update earlier this week, which primarily made performance improvements and addressed a long list of bugs. However, the game was briefly rendered unplayable on Xbox Game Pass following the update, although that issue has since been resolved.

Sea of Thieves is now available on Xbox One and PC. You can read more about the title in GameSpot's Sea of Thieves review. If you're looking to dive into the title, be sure to check out our beginner's guide and tips you should know before starting.

So much Xbox hate this gen god damn . 5 million Xbox players are enjoying PUBG - over a million on sea of thieves chill out and be happy - people love Cod and Fifa every year I'd argue this game is at least different then those . Look look I know you cant afford both consoles and really want to justify your PS4 purchase were all happy for you , but at least let people enjoy a game for a minute . Holy sheet man Sony had no games for the first two years of the cycle and people still gave it a pass

@Ansem_Rev:

I pray, dear Lord, that these many deprived Xbox gamers will experience--at least once--the majesty of a truly wonderful exclusive that's just too good to be experienced on a subscription-based trial.

I pray they see the technical marvel of Horizon Zero Dawn, with giant, mechanical beasts clashing in an apocalyptic landscape; I pray they peer inside of an emotionally-charged, decade-long journey as a man sets down his adventuring life--leaving behind forsaken treasures of wonder-- and enters a new puzzling trial as a father in Uncharted 4; I pray these poor gamers will come to understand the deep, debased strife that exists between men when all else is stripped away, yet also the capacity for good that may flourish in unlikely bonds in The Last of Us; I pray that the veils on their dimmed eyes be lifted and stylishly torn asunder by artful arrays of color in Persona 5, changing their hearts forever; I pray, finally, that the angst of their life be calmed when gazing beyond the grassy knolls of Hyrule towards slow, billowing clouds in Zelda Breath of the Wild.

May Spiderman, God of War, Death's Stranding, Last of Us 2, Detroit: Become Human, Super Smash Brothers, and many other exclusives to come remind these Xbox gamers that they aren't tied to one platform, but that each console in the marketplace must constantly strive, for the sake of their users, to bring forth great gaming experiences, and if they don't...God help them.

Amen

@Ansem_Rev: hey, remember when the order: 1886 released on ps4 a few years back? i have never seen so much unjustified hate for a game in my entire life. majority of the haters with xbots. funny enough, in hindsight, the order was a decent game -- just very short and not worth the full price upon its release -- but a visual masterpiece that puts most games to shame even today in the graphics department. not a single bug to be found and possibly one of the most "polished" games i have played this generation. it is certainly a better game than sea of thieves.

anyways, my point in all this? karma is a bitch.

@Xristophoros: yeah but someone has to be an adult eventually. Everyone can claim something else started it. I was in system wars on these forums when Forza 1, KOTOR, Jade Empire, etc were released, & the hate from the Sony fans was insane (they were called "cows" back then, "lemmings" were MS fans, & "sheep" were Nintendo fans. Sounds stupid now). Eventually you all will see how stupid thise arguments are when you are fans of gaming. Gaming thrives upon competition. If any of those consoles were the only option, we'd be raked over the coals with pricing. Just having competition makes each company have to lower prices to compete, so their existence helps everyone, regardless whether you play their games or not.

@Ansem_Rev: 4k resolution has nothing to do with visual fidelity. i think you need a lesson lol... anyways, like i said: karma is a bitch and it works both ways. the problem with xbox this generation is that it is usually on the stinky end of the stick :D

lol's at all the people this really bothers. So much hate towards a new IP that never even hyped itself up for more than it was. Don't hate on a game that you hyped up in your own mind, that's your fault.

Fastest selling new IP? Well, that'd be more impressive if they'd had many other new IP's this gen now wouldn't it? Not a lot of competition for the crown as it stands.

@Carpetfluff: Does anyone ever get tired of this joke? They've had at least four new IP's exclusives this generation on the Xbox One. Sunset Overdrive, Ryse : Son of Rome, Quantum Break, Recore and now Sea of Thieves.

@thelostscribe: isn't Sunset Overdrive the only one that's any good though? I switched consoles this generation so I'm out of the Xbox loop but I havent heard anything praiseworthy of Recore or Quantum, Ryse being a really pretty tech demo much in the way 1886 was for PS. Sunset Overdrive I heard was imaginative and fun to play. Still none of those strike me as a Horizon Zero Dawn, Nier Bloodborne or Nioh.

@mojoterra99: I'm sure this comment will be easily reduced to the 'fan boy', but besides ReCore, which I was pretty disappointed with graphically and didn't make it too far into, I have immensely enjoyed their new IP's.

Ryse was more than a pretty tech demo. The combat was a bit shallow and repetitive, but it had some of the most unique settings and high impact combat I've seen for awhile. I think had the game done well, it could easily have been a great new franchise. I feel there are too little of Rome based games out there that aren't RTS. The game is still an impressive looking game 4 and a half years in.

Quantum Break was in my opinion fantastic. I have no idea why it did not sell better, but if I did, I'd be in marketing. The premise was unique, the graphics were pretty gorgeous and the story, again to me, was really interesting and deep. I played the game at least three times. The only issue I had with it was the amount of reading that took place, lost opportunity for cut scenes or voice acting on some pretty important bits of story.

One really cool version of stuff you had to read though was near the end where you make it to where the main bad guy was and there is about 20 white boards of really interesting info to look over. The powers were also really fun to use as well. I really feel, just as I did with Alan Wake, that Quantum Break has(had?) a great series potential. I also enjoyed the live action segments as well.

Sunset Overdrive was absolutely a blast. The colorful graphics were great, the story, 4th wall breaking and millennial aimed movie jokes were hilarious. The gameplay traversal was fun and fluid and the weapons were insane. The single player is well worth it, but the multiplayer was also a lot of fun. It may have been one of the most fun games I've ever played honestly, the comedic atmosphere of the entire game was spectacular. I really hope Insomniac does a sequel to it for the Xbox system.

ReCore I was excited for, but I watched a video comparison of the PC version vs the Xbox One and I was pretty aggravated about how low quality the graphics were when it was clearly easily obtainable on the console version. A lot of the textures irritated me, so I played it a bit and swept into the to play list, which is sad because it looked like a fun platformer.

I don't have Sea of Thieves yet because I was very aware that the game required a lot of co op and recently I do not have the time to play co op heavy games or to be honest, a solid three extra people that would be able to play consistently. I do intend to buy it because it looks like a fun game to play if you have a decent party together, but I'll wait till I know that's something I will have. It looks beautiful, but I can see why people have complaints. The game has massive potential, I just hope Rare takes a GTA Online approach and starts adding more activities and content to the game.

Of course the Albatross of new Xbox IP's, Scale Bound, is still brought up to this day. I will admit, I was pretty excited for it and still wish we had a better explanation for what happened there. Phil has said the game was simply not going to live up to the hype and had been pushed back again. Maybe they saw that the parts shown were very promising, but the game itself was simply not coming together as a whole product.

Anyways, I think Ryse had great potential while Quantum Break and Sunset Overdrive absolutely should have received sequels.

I'm in no way saying that these games are better than Sony IP's, I don't own a Playstation and haven't played them, but I do feel that most of Xbox's new IP's this gen deserved at least one sequel.

And this my fellow gaming people, is why microtransactions and other crap exist.

People are paying $60 for a game with no content whatsoever, based on the promise of more content down the road.

You should never buy a game that has fetch quests as the only content. There is barely a game here. It is a tech demo.

I know people will defend this with the whole game pass thing, but it does not excuse the fact that this is a blatant joke of a game and a complete disrespect to anyone's time and money and it being charged at retail for $60.

Disgusting.

Yes, I have played the game.

I can already imagine someone will reply and say why are you so bent out of shape because others like something?

Look, People can like what they like, but they should respect themselves more. I think you should expect more than what you are getting now content wise, I think you deserve it. This is my point. If you love the game great, but take a step back before defending this game and realize the amount of content in this so called game is inexcusable. You deserve better. We deserve better.

how many new ip did microsoft introduce this gen? there was sunset overdrive but that is not 1st party since microsoft does not own insomniac. then there is quantum break which is also a 2nd party game that microsoft published. ryse: son of rome was also a 2nd party game as was ori and the blind forest. i see a pattern here: microsoft does not put out many 1st party games that don't have halo, gears or forza on the box.

to say sea of thieves is their fastest selling NEW ip this gen is not saying much at all considering that is the ONLY new microsoft 1st party ip released this console generation. if you include their 2nd party offerings, then sure, but should we really include those if we are talking about microsoft ip? insomniac, not microsoft, owns sunset overdrice ip. fairly certain remedy owns quantum break ip... etc., etc...

@Xristophoros: allot of Sonys exclusives games are made my devs not owned by sony? hell many of them are only exclusive to ps4 because they are not targeted towards a american (some times not Europe) but only china and japan, which is where xbox has almost no sell. many times only thing Sony does to get some of them is advertise the game since Sony is very strong in that area. many times Sony fails to do even that when agreed, Nioh is a good example. nioh did not get advertised as much as it should of because of how close its resales was to horizon zero dawn. or rimes case Sony did not even pay them once agreed, they found a diffrent publisher who payed Sony back for the fraction of what was agreed and went multi platform. neir automata is also a good example, not a american targeted game, easier to just release it on the pc and ps4. the xbox1 is relevant if ur game is targeted towards a american consumer, otherwise not so much. it still has high penetration here in the states. which is the second populated market for gaming.

I have really enjoyed this game with my friends. Every night is a new story to talk about the next day.

Secondly is crazy to think. “Why do they say free with Game Pass. The game is not free I am paying 9.99 a month for the service, which is not free.... lol could be crazy.

@Arthas045: Many people used the Game Pass 14 day free trial like myself. I have already cancelled and will not be renewing it until there is a new first party game that is worth while. So, I did play Sea of Thieves for free.
