Sega Games Might Cost $70 In The Future

Sega could be the next publisher to implement a price increase.

Sega might be one of the next publishers that charge $70 for its newest video game releases.

During Sega's most recent earnings meeting (via VGC), CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa were asked about the possibility of increasing the price of its titles.

Now Playing: Sonic Frontiers Video Review

Sega explained, “In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year."

"We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions," Sega continued.

The publisher still charges $60 for its latest games, including ones from its biggest franchises like Sonic Frontiers and Like a Dragon: Ishin! However, since 2020, many other publishers have started charging $70 such as PlayStation and Take-Two.

Just recently, Nintendo and Microsoft charged $70 for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Redfall, respectively. Last December, Microsoft revealed that it would increase the price of its first-party Xbox games to $70 in 2023, including Starfield. Nintendo is also evaluating the $70 pricing on a case-by-case basis.

I understand that inflation is real, and in general I'm OK with the price hike for AAA games.

However, I think some companies unjustifiably are just jumping on the bandwagon because free money. Specifically, Tears of the Kingdom should not have been a $70 game, or standalone. It should have been the $40 DLC it was meant to be.

Contain your urges, wait about 5 months and you can buy the game cheaper, vote with your wallet. These greedy game makers need to learn a lesson.

@gawkerfools: Just about. Let's be real here, first-run games are being priced out of the mainstream. We're probably not far from $100 games. The sustainability of the industry has brought us to this, but hey, it's been a fun ride. I've got MORE than enough games to play while I wait for sales.

@nintendians: Why? You said the first company. I answered.

You know, you really shouldn't use Twilight, who prides herself at being knowledgeable and well informed, as an avy.
