Sega Is Delisting Multiple Classic Sonic Games In May Ahead Of Sonic Origins Release

While the games are being pulled from digital storefronts, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 will still be playable via Nintendo Switch Online +.

Ahead of Sonic Origins' June 23, 2022 release, Sega will delist the currently available digital versions of each game included in the collection, which includes the original Sonic the Hedgehog. This removal is coming much sooner than the new version, so you best buy them now if you want to.

A total of four games will be removed from sale as of May 20: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and Sonic CD. Sega specifically cited the release of Sonic Origins as the reason for delisting the current digital versions of each game.

Now Playing: Sonic Origins - Official Trailer

While the games will no longer be available for purchase, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and 2 can still be played via the Sega Ages ports of each game on the Nintendo Switch, with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 specifically also being available to play as part of Nintendo Switch Online +'s Sega Genesis game offerings.

Sonic Origins features remastered versions of all four games, as well as additional features like missions, an infinite-lives Anniversary Mode, new opening and ending animations for each game, and Mirror Mode. Sonic Origins will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

Sega is currently riding high off the success of the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film, which introduces more of Sonic's supporting cast of characters like Knuckles and Tails. The film is now the highest-grossing video game film of all time in North America, having earned nearly $150 million at the domestic box office.

I don't know why they even tried to do that in the first place. It's not like they have their fanbases in their good graces.

They screwed OG Total war fans by not giving us Medieval 3, or Empire 2. But gave us 5 fantasy Total wars in a row. in a series known for its historical media.

They screwed OG SEGA IP fans over. By pretty much leaving all their OG IPs to rot in limbo, or they sold it off long ago to someone even more incapable of handling it.

They screwed Valkeryia chronicles fans over. By only making 1 good Valkeryia game in a decade.

And they screwed over sonic fans. By not giving us a good 3D Sonic game in the past decade. And giving us this mess of a remaster.

After getting some keys in a bundle time ago, I'm afraid they'll no longer be good. Can't wait for my daughter to have her steam account, gonna redeem 'em now. I'm afraid the keys will no longer be good with this.

@santinegrete: Just make her a Steam account now, and give her the login when you think she is old enough.

They're delisting it because they're greedy and they are trying to force people to buy this pointless "remaster".

@ratchet200: Your comment doesn't make sense. How do you buy a delisted game and no one is being forced here. Maybe try rewording it? I'm actually not sure what you're trying to say.

I don't see the point of delisting them. If they are inferior versions, then I doubt they will interfere much with sales of the new collection.

(By inferior, I mean having less features.)

@gamerboy100: If a kid only has so much money to spend, they will buy the cheaper version especially if they don't really notice the difference. Older games also go on more sales.

The point's pretty clear.

Cynical. Seedy. Lame. Exploitive.

There is nothing positive here. They are deliberately stifling your options.
