Sega to close Stormrise studio

Publisher says it will shut down Sega Studios Australia later this year; no rationale provided.

Sega Studios Australia will close later this year, the publisher confirmed with Kotaku today. No rationale for the closure was divulged.

No Caption Provided

The Brisbane-based developer was established in 2002 as Creative Assembly Australia and was behind games like Medieval II: Total War, its Kingdoms expansion, and Stomrise.

The outfit was rebranded Sega Studios Australia in May 2011 and most recently built London 2012: The Official Video Game of the Olympic Games.

Sega cut 37 jobs at the studio last year.

It is not clear how many staffers will be affected by the impending closure or what will happen to any projects the company is currently working on.

Sega release a game that looks nothing like the E3 demo and as expected the game sells poorly yet it is this studio that is being closed down.

Aliens Colonial Marines really bit into their budget so its trying to cut off parts of itself that isn't needed to survive the devastation. SEGA will grow back healthier appendages overtime.

Um...I though they bought Relic? (Canada I'm sure has much better tax breaks than Australia)

I hope one day companies stick around more and people go to the mbecause they're unique and not just high paying =\

the market is applying its self-cleansing abilities. i just wonder how many cleansings a company like sega and a few others can survive. they should have dies one whole decade ago, if not two.

stormrise was not what you call a good game and being the last game the studio made quite some time ago and not having made anything else since, then I probably undertand.

@chadwick1343 The ecomedy in Australia is doing just fine. Problem is that means high wages for staff and, given the fact Australia is about the worst country in the world for video game development, lousy games. Add Sega's Toxic Touch and its no wonder they're closing. Sorry all you young Aussies who want to make games for a living.

Game developement is a very cut throat industry. They spend years on one project. If it's a flop, you get the axe.

@atlanticmoon They still get years worth of salary. If you budget/manage your money your good.

I don't think anyone who gets shut down is really upset. They have a good skill set and knowledge of the industry they can take any direction they want... They can put in a resume to anyone.

@Bl4KD37H Why? They made some good games lately (like Racing Transformed), and Total War games continue to be great and sell well. They also just bought Relic.

Almost all the game developer studios left in Australia are phone/tablet platform targeted.

The sales expectations of large publishers are horribly unrealistic as we have seen recently with companies such as SE and Capcom. Then when they don't, they just close the studio and blame them for not reaching those targets.

Well. I feel so depressed these days when I come on Gamespot. I keep finding out all these developers who keep laying people off. I feel bad for all those people having to seek new employment. At least it's thinning out the masses, and natural selection is playing out in the gaming industry. Good companies get to stick around, companies that can't make outstanding games get ousted. This forces companies to make more intelligent decisions during game development hopefully, that's the silver lining to all this. Good luck, you people of Sega.

@saadomar90 Quite the opposite actually.

If it carries on at this rate then the market for games will become an oligopoly owned by the greedy firms who can afford to publish games nowadays (EA, Activi$ion, Bli$$ard) just like the console market is...

-shudders-

I really hope that's not what the future has in stock for us though :(

@saadomar90 I feel some parts of it is gearbox fault. "In February of 2013, an anonymous whistle blower reported to Destructoid that Gearbox had been taking people and resources off Aliens: Colonial Marines to put them to work on Borderlands, and yet was still collecting full payments from Sega as if they were working on Aliens: Colonial Marines"-wikipedia

@saadomar90 I don't think this is necessarily true. There have been a lot of really good developers that have made great games that have gotten shut down in the past few years. "Intelligent decisions" don't always pan out the way they are planned in this industry. Really, it's just what sells the most that determines who gets to stick around, and as we all know, what sells is not always what's good. And these days, even games that sell really well are considered failures by their publishers because of the outrageous expectations and inflated budgets. There is a lot of changing that needs to happen with the way the game industry works. It seems like at least once a week there's another story about a developer being shut down. It's depressing as hell.

@Shakezulah @saadomar90 No need to get depressed, they aren't. If anything they get a little respite before they figure out what they want to do next. Try to start up their own company, get absorbed by a hiring company ((Shrugs))

It works a lot different than you guys think.

When a game company you work for gets liquidated it's not like your mind gets erased, you take your knowledge and experience on to the next thing...

It's just a flooded market...I remember when I used to wait 2 or 3 months between game releases I was interested in...now there's at least one game a month that I want, and usually more than that...it's impossible to keep up and impossible for every game to do the numbers publishers expect of them.

Eddie, spell checker. Its Stormrise, not Stomrise. Stomrise sounds like something that happens to Judge Dredd when he's thinking of Hershey.

This is good to see, personally I feel that gaming should die eventually, it has already fulfilled many legacy's. Why continue to do like movies, and just come out with sequels, or reboots.

This is definitely the last generation. Too many studios closing, too expernsive. I'm very scared for the future of this industry as all too often I'm reading of closures and cancelled games and flops and so on.

@immortality20 Not necessarily.

A market crash could be good, it'll get rid of all the bad blood in the industry (just like it did in '83).

We just need to hope that we'll have another saviour like Miyamoto...

@santinegrete They only made Medieval 2 (and expansion). Their other games are not as good. Maybe that's why it's being closed. The UK studio is making the good Total War games, anyway.

Instead of closing down studios that produce good quality games, how about focusing on actually advertising those games and instead close down other studios that produce garbage bin games, like I don't know, Sonic Team?

@Dark_Mits The last game they made that people call "quality" was Medieval 2. All Total War games since then were made by the UK studio.
