Seven More Xbox One Backwards Compatibility Games Arrive Today

2017 is off to a strong start for the backwards compatibility catalog.

In December, Xbox boss Phil Spencer teased that January would be a strong month for the backwards compatibility program. Now, Microsoft has announced the first additions to the catalog this year, with a total of seven games joining the program today.

No Caption Provided

The Xbox 360 games Strania, The Splatters, Scrap Metal, and Ghostbusters are now playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility. Additionally, Dragon Age: Origins, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, and Battlefield 3 were added today.

If you already own these games for Xbox 360, they should show up automatically in your Xbox One library. If not, you can buy most of them on Xbox One or via the Xbox.com links below.

The Xbox One's backwards compatibility program, which launched in November 2015, has more than 300 games in it. In late 2016, all the core BioShock games joined the catalog.

You can see a list of all the backwards compatibility games here.

In more recent news, Microsoft announced that players collectively spent 265 million hours playing Xbox 360 games on Xbox One in 2016.

The next question: Will Dragon Age: Origins' DLC (including the Exp pack Awakenings) be B/C as well?

Whew! I was horrified for a moment!

When I first read the line "The Xbox 360 games Strania, The Splatters, Scrap Metal, and Ghostbusters are now playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility." and clicked on the "Ghostbusters" link, it brought up the review for the crappy new game not the amazing 360 game. Thankfully in the price list, it links to the correct game in the Microsoft store.

Thanks for the scare, GameSpot!

Wow, some great games! I'm especially glad to see Ghostbusters get added. That game was seriously awesome. Like my 5th Xbox 360 died while playing it, and I had to buy a new one immediately to keep going LOL

Backwards Compatibility should have more weight today than it's ever had, as much as some here belittle it the fact is we live in a video game era which has produced 10+ years of Call of Duty and that has taken a huge toll on the variety and genres we have today. Hopefully Xbox does keep adding more games while also starting to make original Xbox games Backwards Compatible, basically If MS gets it right from this console generation going forward all the old Xbox games will be accessible on the newest format and all our libraries will move forward.

Why would they bother wasting time on Bioshock games when you can just get the remastered ones for Xbox One all in one pack? Dragon Age Origins is unfortunately very poor on XBox , it was only really decent on PC due to the differences with camera allowance which dramatically affected the strategy you could use.

It was a shame they didn't offer the same camera perspective options on console as it almost ruined the game leaving them out.

Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

If you haven't played this quit screwing around and DO so. (I DGAF what you think about the 2016 film, it's irrelevant)

This, even according to Dan Ackroyd, is Ghostbusters 3.

AND ITS AWESOME.

Stoked to play this tonight.

@skyhighgam3r: Yeah, it is completely awesome, and it is Ghostbusters 3. It made me completely fall in love with Ghostbusters again.

I'd forgotten how incredibly distinctive/awesome the sound design is too. Doesn't sound like anything else.

Writing and cast are awesome, gameplay was awesome, looked awesome (at least at the time, though I doubt it looks bad now).

Cheaper to buy 360 for those games. Why buy a X1 for them?

@Random_Matt: No one is buying an X1 to play X360 games. They are buying an X1 to play X1 games and it's awesome to be able to play X360 games AS WELL.

Seriously don't get everyone's problem with this feature...

@skyhighgam3r: I guess my problem with it is this...people like to make the argument that they don't have to keep their 360 connected any more, and they can simply remove it from their entertainment system/setup. But, that's not entirely true. The fact of the matter is, my 360 library consists of 140+ games. Many of which are not backward compatible (still), and probably never will be - Culdcept Saga and Civ:Revolutions are just two of them that come to mind immediately. So, no matter how long they support this backward compatibility effort, it doesn't really mean much in the long run. It's just one more "feature" in a last ditch effort to stay relevant this console generation that ultimately ends up falling short for me.

@otterbee: For MOST people, they have a certain number of games. A subset of those games are the ones they want to play badly enough to keep their 360 ("essential"). This subset is usually much smaller. Once MS gets enough of the games in that subset working, most people would then decide they could unhook and possibly sell their 360. For me this has already happened... the ones that have not made it yet are not ones I consider essential enough that I need to keep a 360 hooked up. Hopefully they will continue to knock off some of the others, but I'm satisfied with where we are and greatly appreciate the option of playing my old games (and frequently do).

It seems like there are a LOT of people on the internet who claim this feature is useless unless it's perfect (iow all games are available). I don't think this is the case... it all depends on how you look at it. If Civ Rev is on that list for you then it may very well not be good enough for you yet... but every time they release another batch of games that are knocking off people's "essential" list and allowing more people to retire their 360. They seem pretty committed to continuing, so hopefully they will get to you soon!

In addition, I love that as they are made bc, there are a lot of old games that I actually pick up for the first time... it's nice to get to go back and play games I missed.

@otterbee: I'm the same I have 100's of X360 games and I was thinking they won't get them all onto X1, but maybe MS will prove us wrong it's still early and they've done an excellent job and added games which I thought wouldn't make it

Sports games and racing games are probably not going to come over with so many licenses

@skyhighgam3r: I don't have a problem with it as i have hundreds of 360 games but i don't really see any reason for them to spend time making something backwards compatible that is already available as a remaster such as Bioshock collection.

@deviltaz35: Because not everyone wants to buy the same game again? And the ports aren't always better.

I own both the ports and originals, and in the case of Bishock 2 I'm not decided yet which I'll play.

@titang1: Why is it humorous? One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. Why would they stop releasing bc titles because they cancelled one overbudget new game (or whatever the reason was)? Yes, I was looking forward to Scalebound but I suspect they had a decent reason... they don't just axe a great game for no reason.

@nukestorm: From what I understand the millennial generation were those born in between 1977 and 1994, I'm 35 and I would still say I'm too old to fit into what people describe these people to be THESE days. Perhaps it's more fair to refer to them as "modern millenials" lol, you know, those entitled hipster brats that vape, have beards, shave one side of their head, wear neckscarves in the summer, and wear plaid everything.

Consoles, especially XB1, basically committed suicide by offering all their games on PC. More games should do like RDR2 & at least skip PC for a few years. That & AAA games are unicorn rare these days bc so many poorly run companies lost their asses last gen by putting out shit games

@anodyn3: It's more an experiment to try and get people into Windows 10. Plus it only started recently that you purchase it on xbox you also get a PC version and it only applies to digital purchases too. Anything bought instore unless a special promo you don't get both codes.
