Seven Years In, Phil Spencer Has Succeeded Immensely In Helping Xbox Turn Things Around

OPINION: Spencer has been at the helm for seven years now, and he's helped turn the Xbox ship around.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer is celebrating an anniversary with Xbox. It was seven years ago, on March 31, 2014, that Spencer was promoted to Head of Xbox. It was a big, dramatic change for Microsoft and Xbox, as the company faltered under the leadership of Don Mattrick and some of the policy moves that the company pushed in regards to DRM and used games.

In short, Xbox was in a tough position back then. The Xbox One launched at $500, a full $100 above the PS4, thanks in part to Kinect being bundled with every system. Microsoft did sell 1 million units of the Xbox One in its first 24 hours, but the surge at launch could not be sustained in the long-term, and the PS4 would handily outsell the Xbox One over time.

Spencer would go on to acknowledge and own up to Microsoft's numerous shortcomings in the Xbox One era, and in particular the controversial policy decisions from the previous leadership team. Under Spencer's leadership, and due to a number of other factors, Xbox is in a great position right now. The Xbox Series X|S had a record-setting launch, while initiatives that Spencer spearheaded like Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud Streaming have taken off to great success.

"Crazy to think it's been 7 years. Couldn't be more proud of the team; what they've learned and accomplished over the years. Lot's more to do, thanks for all the support and feedback from the community, I really do appreciate all the positive energy," he said on Twitter.

Looking back at the announcement from March 31, 2014 is a fun stroll down memory lane. At the time, Spencer said he was "honored to lead the team at this incredible time for Microsoft and the games industry." His blog post was titled "A New Day at Xbox."

Back in 2014, Spencer laid out a vision for where he saw Xbox heading in the future, and I think many would agree he achieved that and then some.

"Our mission is to build a world-class team, work hard to meet the high expectations of a passionate fan base, create the best games and entertainment, and drive technical innovation. As we continue forward, this renewed focus and mission will be a foundational part of how I lead the Xbox program," he said at the time.

Spencer has made dramatic moves as Head of Xbox, including spending $10 billion on acquiring Mojang/Minecraft and also ZeniMax and its subsidiary studios and franchises. Those investments could pay, or in the case of Minecraft are already paying, significant dividends for Microsoft. With ZeniMax now under the Microsoft fold, Microsoft takes ownership of franchises like Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Doom, and more, and brings on eight new first-party studios to help bolster its exclusive lineup going forward. Microsoft was criticized in the past for not doing enough in terms of first-party game development and exclusives, and that argument is likely to fall apart now with all the moves Microsoft has made. Microsoft of course also acquired teams like Double Fine, Ninja Theory, Obsidian, inXile, and more, as well as starting a new studio called The Initiative that is working on a new Perfect Dark game.

Spencer also led the team in pushing a new approach to releasing Xbox games on more platforms to help broaden the playerbase. The company previously kept Xbox games on console and PC games on PC. But now, Xbox games are released everywhere, and even beyond console and PC thanks to cloud streaming for mobile devices and tablets. The executive also led the charge in pushing for cross-play, when, in 2016, he boldly announced a plan and a willingness to work with Sony and Nintendo on cross-play.

Spencer is known for his candor and free speaking, and he has on numerous occasions taken a hard line against the idea of console wars in the gaming industry. He says it serves no purpose and has a negative effect on gaming, and has consistently called for change.

Game Pass deserves a callout as well, as Spencer helped spearhead the launch of this Netflix-style subscription service that could be Microsoft's secret weapon. Xbox Game Pass could have dramatic, long-lasting implications for Xbox and beyond, and it's off to a great start with 18 million subscribers and a lot of positive buzz about how great a value it is.

Spencer is known for being humble, so he wouldn't take credit for all of Microsoft's success stories for Xbox in recent years, and he does have a big team around him that gets the job done. But he has personally led the way in his public-facing position and he sets the tone.

It hasn't been completely smooth sailing, however, as Spencer was part of the team that decided to cancel Scalebound, shut down Lionhead, and close down Microsoft's ambitious Xbox Entertainment Studios division (which, to be fair, he inherited from previous management).

The future is unwritten and uncertain, but Spencer has demonstrated again and again that he is a capable, forward-thinking leader who is committed to Xbox and growing the brand.

It's way too early to say that Phil Spencer has "turned Xbox around." Ever since he's been the head of Xbox, Xbox has ranked dead last in every sales category except for cloud gaming (still new) and non-online gaming subscription services (game pass). There's a very good chance that both cloud gaming and game pass will be nothing more than passing fads.

Xbox is a brand that will likely not see another generation, unless cloud gaming and game pass take off. I doubt it will.

I am always impressed by the news articles here on gamespot by Eddie Mc.. Oh, I mean his ability to copy paste and rearrange an article from the past https://www.washingtonpost.com/video-games/2020/07/16/phil-spencer-console-war-mentality-xboxs-shift-away-box/, just scroll down and look at similar arcs - console wars, gamepass, industry focus. While not word for word, pretty close.

Still though a great article by Gene Park, and the hot mess that was given to Phil Spencer was unbelievable. Mattrick and Balmer influence had to be cut out by a chain saw, not a scalpel, their way of thinking was great for corporations but horrible for consumer media consumption. They trully believed that consoles would die, that the only games left would be social media games from Zenga like Farmville, and that consoles would limp along through 8th gen on fads like motion control. Oh and of course the xbox being an all in one, living room experience, bullchit. Those two killed off over 70-80% of all first party deals with publishers, ghosted developers and projects, and wanted xbox to be this FPS/ bro game machine until the consoles died. The commercialized metadata more then any other platform, more then steam. And for what ... to destroy all of the good will and momentum xbox had going from the 7th gen to the 8th.

Phil is on the right track, invest, invest, and invest some more. Like during the 6th gen with the xbox - they expected to lose billions to enter the crowded console market- and they did, but they did it well. Xbox 360 grabbed so much market share, even though Sony had expanded its console brand throughout EU, and many emerging markets. Sony not only was amazing in having so many great exclusives 8th gen but also in having shelf space in so many more countries - people forget that most still buy consoles and games at brick and mortar and not just Amazon. So the new directions Phil is taking .... should set it up well for this gen and probably much better 10th gen. It is amazing how a corporation that is poorly managed, can nose dive so quickly.

He's doing a great job. They've had some missteps, but the dude cares about gamers and is doing his best by them. They're already firing out of the gates in this new "next" gen, and I'm excited to see where he takes the brand. I'm about it.

As a gamer you only really need to look at 1 stat to know that Phil is doing his job well. During his tenure they have added 13 first party studios. Many of those studios with multiple teams.

@keiser69: I would have to disagree. MS buying the other studios just means that they have money. This has nothing to do with their (gaming)success. I mean sure, MS has a lot of money from different divisions, but someone using company money to buy studios should not count as a job well done. It is not rocket science, everyone knows xbox does not have as many good exclusives as nintendo and sony. So now, they are attempting to even the playing field. Would I be considered a genius if I solved a problem such as this? I think xbox will lose again, but mainly because of PC. Since there will be no true xbox exclusives, a lot of people will skip over the xbox. I can't be the only person in the world that thinks that an xbox is useless to buy since I have a more powerful gaming pc. I am not saying it is useless, I am just saying, why buy one? And why choose an xbox over a RTX 3080?

@allencc3: To your first point you would be considered a genius for fixing an obvious problem if noone else seemed to figure it out. There were several leaders of Xbox before Phil and when Phil took over they had 6 studios. Thats it. Current prices because of shortages is like $1000 for a 3080. And thats if you already have a decent PC to upgrade. Right now you cant compete with a 500 Series X or PS5 in the PC market. Also MS really doesnt care if you play on PC. MS would rather you subscribe to XGP on PC than on XBox. They make more money that way because they dont lose money on selling you the hardware.

@allencc3:

Why choose an xbox over RTX 3080? Oh yes, you are right. I also always tell people to buy a Bugatti Veyron instead of an Opel Corsa, because the Bugatti is much more powerful.

By the way, xbox can't lose to PC, because it is basically the same company. It is like saying the PSVita is losing to the PS4.

@allencc3: Buying the right studios is what makes the difference and it's hardly all that Phil has initiated, as listed above.

"And why choose an xbox over a RTX 3080?"

Derp, because most people don't want to spend more on one piece of tech in their PC than they do on an entire console.

@dancingcactus: MS and Sony both would kill to have FIFA Madden Battlefield Battlefront Titanfall Apex Legends. Hell they would kill just to get The Sims. Just because a company is disliked doesn't mean they aren't wildly successful

oh geez,i already hear some of you say "sladakrobot is here to praise Phil and Xbox"...nah,not doing that.

Just wanna say this is how much time and money it costs to get back on track when you f'ed it up.

After the terrible start of the PS3,it took Sony plenty of time and sacrifices to get back...same with Xbox.

So,to all Sonys,Microsofts and Nintendos...dont screw your playerbase as it will costs you multiple times more money and time to fix the reputation.

I have an Xbox and an Xbox 360. I didn't get an Xbox One and probably won't get an Xbox Series X. The lack of exclusives hurt my desire to get one. I do have all generations of PS and some of Nintendos.

They do offer something good with the Game Pass. It is temping if I'm not an older gamer that doesn't have time to play all day. IF I do have that kinda time, I would probably get it for the PC

@thomaswmak: I would highly recommend getting it. I am older too with very little time to play. Game Pass has many smaller games that are perfect for that. I also play on my PC, Xbox, and phone with XCloud. It works pretty great and the price is good as well.

@twiztedwizard: Exactly. There are tons of good, entertaining games on Game Pass that you can pick up and play at small interims. You can have a fun diversion and don't have to play for hours. Sometimes that is what you need to clear your head. mix it up a little. Plenty of good games on there I probably would not have given a chance, otherwise.

The selection has gotten better and better over the years. The service is just...convenient. The Witcher 3 just left, Narita Boy joined two days ago, and Outriders today (which I was totally going to skip after watching some of the demo cutscenes while waiting for the PC demo download).

@twiztedwizard: well i have tons of games on my backlog that I think i should play first. when there's a game dirt cheap or that I really want, i do an impulse buy. But I just don't impulse buy a monthly sub of game pass because i don't "own" it, and for the lack of FOMO.

It's honestly incredible to see the difference between Xbox in 2014 and Xbox in 2021. Phil Spencer really seems like a true gamer at heart. Someone who loves video games regardless of platform and age.

Big pushes for Backwards Compatibility, and platform agnosticism are some of the reasons I have fallen in love with Xbox again after deciding to get a PS4 at last-gen's launch.

@skyhighgam3r: Agreed. The Xbox One X was also a big step in the right direction. The XSex also seem like a compelling piece of hardware once it gets more interesting next gen games. I'll buy it in a year or so.
