Shadow Of The Colossus Creator Sent Sony List Of Changes He Wants For PS4 Remake

Maybe there'll be more changes than just updated graphics.

One of the surprise announcements out of E3 2017 was that a PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus is in the works. Although it's is in development at Bluepoint and creator Fumito Ueda isn't heavily involved, Ueda nonetheless has ideas about what the remake should be.

In an interview with Eurogamer, Ueda shared that he has submitted a list of proposed changes to Sony. Although he doesn't know if Sony will take them into account, there are several things he hopes will be modified from the original game.

Speaking through a translator, Ueda said, "I transmitted my petition about the content and tuning but I don't know the implementation will be what I told." The translator explained later, "It's [Ueda] who wants to change something, but he doesn't know if it is possible to change all of the things he [wants] to change."

The remake is scheduled to launch in 2018, although few other details are known right now. Although the original game was made by Team Ico, the remake is being handled by Bluepoint Games, an American developer that is known for remastering other games. You can see some of Shadow of the Colossus' new visuals in the announcement trailer embedded at the top of this article.

This is one of my all time favorite games. I just hate the way all Team Ico games control. I get that's their style, and it's done on purpose, but man, that s*** is frustrating sometimes. I'm down for whatever remastering they feel like doing, but changing up those controls would absolutely have me sold.

Imagine a jrpg where the creatures have towns on top of them and you must climb them for ultra rare NPC and store gear above 1million, if you kill the creatures you end up as the creature. Nah.

The city on a creatures kinda okay, but better of limiting it for creative purposes.

the old Remake VS Remaster debate will rage on for a loooooooong time amongst petty gamers.

Honestly though, who cares what it is.... just enjoy it if you're into the game or never got to play it before

@gamingdevil800: errr... The studio doing the remake is American. A major point in the article is how the game's Japanese creator isn't actually involved and Team ICO itself is busy doing other things. Did you... read anything?

The colossi battles were great but cannot see myself playing through this again. A sequel with new story, new colossi and varied gameplay would have been more appealing. I can't stand the thought of having a new console to play games that were already released on previous gens.

Bluepoint is pretty solid. So, even if this is just a remaster, I'll be more than happy with buying day 1.

2018 is lookin' as good as 2017 already is for PS4.

So that's why the game looks exactly the same. The graphics are pretty nice but from the trailer it looked like they changed absolutely nothing else.

Is it a remake or a remaster? The words are getting used interchangeably. Getting a little confused here.

Anyway, I'd be happy if they just added a bunch of new colossi to the game. Same as the original, plus some new ones to fill out the land a bit. Maybe sprinkle a few treasure chests in all those ruins you can climb into containing the treasures you get from doing the time trials. That right there sounds grand to me.

@Barighm: I'd say it's neither. IMHO a Remake is from scratch/ground up reinterpretation of the original and judging from the preview it looks too similar in design albeit with enhanced graphics. Remasters are usually higher res ports sometimes with improved textures (MGS, ICO, Turok, Perfect Dark). This goes beyond that. I think we need a new term for these types of Remaster+ (Resident Evil 1 and Zero, Mario 64 DS, Zelda OoT 3DS, Star Fox 3DS).

@jone_g2: I don't believe it adds more Colossi. Unless I was looking at the wrong quotes, he was saying there are 16 Colossi total, not added.

@Barighm: Good point. I think this classifies as a remake. A remake is a ground up reproduction while a remaster is some added gloss with little to no change to the core of the game. Like the new Crash Trilogy. That's a remaster. It's a tad confusing.
I'm hoping for some added surprises from this remake. New colossi, as you said little chests or whatever. I'd like the controls to be touched up more than anything though.

@Foxhound71: A remake is literal as the game is remade from the ground up, which is what the Crash N Sane Trilogy is. A remaster is the same game improved upon in some way. Both a remake and remaster can also add new content and rebalancing that wasn't in the original version.

@cfscorpio: It's remade from the ground up on an entirely different engine and also put on new hardware. Remasters is the same game upscaled. This clearly isn't the original games simply upscaled. I've done that on emulator.

@xOmniCloudx: It doesn't matter if the engine changed. If the game is the same game - with the exact same plot, the same gameplay mechanics, the same levels - it's a remaster.

Wild Arms Alter Code F is a remake of Wild Arms.

The Last of Us on PS4 is a remaster of The Last of Us.

Ratchet and Clank on PS4 is a remake of the original Ratchet and Clank.

Final Fantasy 6 on GBA is a remaster of the Final Fantasy 6 on SNES.

This is going to be a remaster, EVEN if they add a bit of extra content here and there.

@Thanatos2k: not true. this game is being rebuilt from the ground up with new assets. it is a remake. the newly released crash bandicoot trilogy is also a remake, not a remaster, for the same reasons mentioned.

@Xristophoros: If I start this game, and I start inside the palace, then wander out and fight the same Titans in the same order stabbing them in the same places with the same controls, then it's the same game - and is a remaster, not a remake.

@Thanatos2k: Mr. Hate Googles!!!

False.

Remake--New Engine/Made from scratch--with new stuff added.

Remaster--Same Engine/Original game with better graphics

If you take something old and just update its looks your REMASTERING IT.

If you take something NEW and replicate something OLD then it's a REMAKE.

@Foxhound71: Crash Trilogy is a remake. remaster is like a little updated textures, 16:9 support, higher resolutions and frames. But for example the shape of trees or characters are same.

@cfscorpio: Remade graphics. A remake doesn't have to mean a bunch of improvements or changes. All those PS2 collections on PS3 are remasters because they just took the old graphics and polished them. They stupidly call Crash a remaster when it's so obviously a remake.

@cfscorpio: Read again since by his definition (and actual definition) this is a remake since it has far more than what he listed while a Remaster does not. Updated textures is removing jaggies, AA and upscaling. This got rid of the original assets entirely and remade them so the updated graphics are a literal remake. You don't have to change anything about game design or how games play in remasters or remakes as I already said in my other post since that has nothing to do with either and are just personal development choices. Remake and Remasters are all about VISUALS, period.

It's like people don't under that the base word of remake is make, the the base word of remaster is master and re means to do again. Remake = Make over, Remaster = to master it again. Master = to put finishing touches on. If you're remastering then it means to put the finishing touches on something again which is done by newer tech of sound and video display.

I'm sure you've heard of a movie or soundtrack being remastered and every time they say it, it means to make the same thing look and sound better. When they remake a song or movie clearly it's brand new but made in the style of the old one and you wouldn't call them remasters. I don't see why this is so hard for people to get since it's literally in the word and other entertainment mediums that they indulge in every day that make it even more obvious.

The term remaster for games only came into use and popularity last generation when Sony started it by taking the PS2 God of War games and upscaling them into HD for PS3. These are not the PS1 games just upscaled.... Before then, games that went through the same process of Crash were ALWAYS called remakes. Really shows how young some people are or how much they never knew what they were talking about to begin with.

@xOmniCloudx: I thought that the term "Remaster" came from film and music, and referred to the "Master" copy. That just means it's the original version that all copies and edits are made from.

So to "remaster" is just to replace the original, and be like "THIS is the main version from now on. All copies and modded versions should use this as the starting point".

So unless I'm mistaken, a remaster and remake can even be the same thing, as long as someone who owns the rights declares the remake to be a replacement of the original.
