Shadow of the Eternals crowd-funding project expands with Kickstarter

Spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness' new crowd-funding page to run in parallel with existing campaign on official website.

Precursor Games has opened up an additional crowd-funding page for its upcoming game Shadow of the Eternals via Kickstarter.

"It's a cookbook--A COOKBOOK!"

Precursor Games CEO Paul Caporicci said that the new campaign page will work in tandem with the existing crowd-funding page on the official site. The money will be used for the creation of the game's first episode.

At this point in time, the Kickstarter page has raised $25,118 out of its $1,350,000 goal, with 35 days left. Backers who donated on the website's crowd-funding page will get an exclusive Whately Expose pack, which is a digital collection of the game's lore, manuscripts, and clues.

Shadow of the Eternals was revealed earlier this month and was billed as the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness on the Nintendo GameCube. The game is slated for a 2014 release on the PC and Wii U in episodic form.

I toyed with the idea when it was first announced but I didn't like paying for something that I hadn't seen yet.

But now I have backed it. Eternal Darkness was quite special and I'd really like to see this game made and if this is the way to get it done then I guess I have to contribute my share.

Yeah, this should be interesting, they really should have waited until they could get on Kickstarter before doing this. $1.35 million is a huge number and the approximately $150,000 they have raised on their site so far would have been a much needed boost to the Kickstarter numbers since they won't get any of the KS money if they don't hit their funding request.

In saying that though, I will be disappointed if this game doesn't get made, Eternal Darkness is probably one of my favourite games of all time and the chance to play a spiritual successor is very exciting news to me, whether I like Dyack or not. Actually, on that point, it should be noted that Dyack apparently isn't really running the business end of things at Precursor so that should prevent another X-Men Destiny from happening, assuming that Kotaku article was true anyways.

Not to come across all ostrich syndrome or anything, but can someone please explain all this Denis Dyack hate? All I see on every site is people trash talking him. What did he do to piss everyone off?

@SavoyPrime @kohle36 It's an X-men game for god sake...

I really wonder if anyone put Gearbox in the same mold then... where is the Gearbox hate after Alien Colonial Marines?

@Valen_Ca @eva02langley Well, sorry pal, but the industry have changed. All this Free to play crap is horrible. I don't understand the big fuzz. They are starting a new company and they try something new. They ask you for your money right away, but you are getting half the game for 25$, or the first episode for 5$. It's not like you are getting nothing in return.

@eva02langley

There is a lot of hate on Gearbox for their role in that, trust me, it was all over this site when Colonial Marines launched. The difference is that Gearbox isn't asking its fanbase for money at the moment, if they were you would probably see some of it spilling over again. Also Gearbox has the advantage of releasing a game relatively recently that a lot of people enjoyed playing in the form of Borderlands 2, so that has generated some amount of goodwill that still holds with consumers.

Glad to see they went with Kickstarter. Seems a bit more reliable having a middle-man than to just blindly give them my money. That said, I've now invested my share of money into the project and I look forward to receiving my 1st episode when it's complete. I'm just happy to see something good finally being released for the Wii U that isn't a 1st party release.

The campaign is doing fine. They put 1.5 million, but that was in the best of scenario case. They are around 200K right now which is better than I expected for a week.

All I see on the forums is BS about Denis from programmers that work for him and blah blah blah. In reality, the guy invented Legacy of Kain, made a couple of really interesting PS games, and made 2 incredible GC games. I am sorry, but Eternal Darkness was a pure marvel.

From my perspective, SK was victim of publisher money driven tactic. I gladly give my 25$ and would do again. I prefer paying for a game I will care about then the billion of other piece of plastic junk on consoles.

So I must admit that he is exactly the way you descriebe him...

I gotta agree with the Dyack dissenters. I didn’t even know or care about this guy until Too Human. Even then I thought the game was just ok and missed it’s potential. Still didn’t care about the guy until the article came out that he blamed the fans in regards to Too Human.

That right there does not go over well with me. You screw up your own game and blame the fans…? What the hell man, not cool.

They went with like a 40 day campaign instead of the usual 30. They have not raised close to the 1.5 million needed. This is a bad sign. I don't think it's going to get funded.

The successful kickstarters reach their target after 1 day or 2 days tops and then work on stretch goals from there. About 50% of the amount it will raise during the whole campaign will be raised on day 1. Basically, I think this game is doomed.

They're going to need a publisher. How about begging Nintendo to do it? Then they could even officially call it ED2.

Thank god. The added visibility that a kickstarter brings, is much needed to raise 1,5 million.

I'm actually considering contributing now :)

Just run to Nintendo and make an official physical version (we all episodes), this Kickstarter campaign thing doesn't seem like a good idea especially if all they get is Episode 1. Shadow of the Eternals is in the same situation as The Big Blue (spiritual successor to Ecco the Dolphin), they are both great IPs but doesn't had very many fans or interest.

they aren't going to make their goal. In fact, I don't see how putting up a kickstarter is going to help them. They set the bar at 1,350,000 on kickstarter which they aren't going to achieve. I'm assuming they still keep the money raised on their initial crowdfunding page? Even so, they aren't going to reach 1.5M there either.

Just give the game to PS3 and 360 players also PS4 and next XBOX players and watch the kick starter sky rocket.

I can't stand Kick Starter btw its a good idea gone very very wrong like DLC but hey its just a tip and I would like for people who don't play on WiiU and PC to be able to play it.. unless its a bad game.. then you can keep it on WiiU : P

@Prime_28 they don't deserve it. They don't care about a sequel nearly as much as the fans.

Denis Dyack? = NO funding thanks.

I don't begrudge the other developers but seriously, to take him onto the team was a BAD move so what other bad decisions are they likely to make.

@Banefire76 Blind...? I think you are stupid if you think the media were right on this. Epic brought SK down with their BS countersuit. Epic simply wave the contract and they said they never did anything wrong... and nothing good either for supporting their engine with other devs which have been reported numerous time.

Get back to reality and stop being a fool. He was ripped off his first multi-million franchise, Legacy of Kain, due to copyright, and Too Human is the result of... copyrights... so yeah... I think getting away from publisher BS, was a good move.

It will be a cold day in hell when I send money to the likes of Denis Dyack. Kickstarter projects have been misappropriated before and if anyone is going to screw the public it will be Denis.

@mdboomer What a joke... and who screwed SK and Denis if not Microsoft and stupid Epic games. Funny now, they are working with Cryengine 3 and there is no complaints at all.

I DO believe that Epic screwed them and Too Human was the result of what you had. That thing didn't happened when Nintendo was in the picture, which prove a lot.

Keeping Dyack on board is probably what's holding most people. Such a shame tho, the game looks promising.

@unreal_master They aren't they are taking donations on their homepage through paypal and now they have a Kickstarter for people that would rather donate through that. Star Citizen did the same thing, only they started their Kickstarter after they made a descent amount on their own site, this game isn't doing very well on their website so that might be why they started a Kickstarter.

They are probably having trouble finding people to donate when they won't get their money back like they would on Kickstarter.

Of course with the amount of funding they have gotten it seems likely this could just separate their supporters and cause the Kickstarter to fail getting them even less money.
