Shenmue 3 Breaks Funding Records on Kickstarter

Ys Net's sequel becomes highest funded video game project.

Shenmue 3 has broken a Kickstarter record to become highest crowdfunded video game on the platform.

At the time of writing, the Shenmue 3 campaign has generated $5,553,470, beating the $5,545,991 that Castlevania: Symphony of the Night designer Koji Igarashi accrued for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

When placed alongside all Kickstarter projects, Shenmue 3 is the eighth most funded project, behind The Veronica Mars Movie Project ($5,702,153), Ouya ($8,596,474), and Exploding Kittens ($8,782,571).

The top three most funded projects are Pebble, at No.3 with $10,266,845, the Coolest Cooler at No.2 with $13,285,226, and Pebble Time at $20,338,986.

Shenmue series creator, Yu Suzuki, is set to host a live event to mark the ending of the Kickstarter campaign at 4 PM PST today (12 AM UK time). He will be joined by various key members of the development team.

According to Suzuki, Shenmue 3 will offer the "full-on Shenmue experience." Shenmue 3 was announced during Sony's E3 2015 press conference. Although Sony is involved in the project, the extent of its involvement has not yet been made clear.

Suzuki did, however, address questions regarding the funding of Shenmue 3 and Sony's involvement in the project, ensuring fans that crowdsourced "funds are going strictly to Ys Net for development of Shenmue 3."

Does this mean it will have the complete "open-world" experience? Also, is this a Sony exclusive?

@Kjranu: I think they're only counting funds raised on the Kickstarter platform. Not sure though, the article is a little misleading with their wording. Star Citizen was on Kickstarter, but when their Kickstarter campaign ended they were at $6.2 million, and I think that total was split between their Kickstarter and IgnitionDeck pledges.

After the initial campaign ended, they just kept on going on their own website. $85 million at the moment.

So yeah, the crown for most crowdfunded game project goes to Star Citizen, but the crown for most funds raised for a game on Kickstarter now goes to Shenmue III.

No

Because this asshole made impossible stretch goals.

Half a million for f*cking ragdoll physics?

Physics that have been in gaming for over 10 years and is pretty much standard at this point?

F*ck outta here.

Ill pirate the PC version when it comes out.

According to Suzuki, Shenmue 3 will offer the "full-on Shenmue experience."

Actually, no. According to Suzuki, he needs 10 million to do the open world experience he envisioned.

They might have reached that goal or gone a lot closer to it if the stretch goals for this campaign were less unenticing. The first half million after hitting the funding goal was wasted on subtitles of europpean languages few people want (if these non-english speaking europeans were on a kickstarter page they probably understood english, and if they didn't they wouldn't be there pledging anyway). It doesn't cost half a million to do these translations, especially without voice acting. Then you look at what else was further down the line, and the amount they asked for is far in excess of what it would actually cost to produce.

The project was never going to reach the 10 million goal. I mean, they're charging half a million just for ragdoll physics? Another half a million just so the AI can battle amongst themselves. Battling on high ground will cost another half million. A few mini games will be another half million. If they gave realistic demands for what they're offering, they would have got more. If they can't do these things for less than half a million each, they need to hire more talented people.

Also, don't do stretch goals in half million increments. They are daunting milestones, especially for the small return. Increments should be in smaller amounts so people see them as more realistic targets to hit, and willing to pledge towards it. If you set the increments too high, people will say, that's not reachable, I'm not even going to bother giving more money.

@lostn: We going to pass the 11 million before this years ends. They going to accept paypal on their website. Then still 2 years and a half we crazy fans that we are can still make that total pledge 20 millions in a year and a half. You will never find more passionate fans than Shenmue fans. You never see fans of a game calling their game a "life experience"

@lostn: He didn't say his vision was an open world game. Just that they could make it open world if they happened to get that much money. He's stated a few times that he wants to do a smaller, but more detailed world. That's his "vision." He was just leaving his options open with that unrealistic stretch goal.

@double_O7: If it wasn't his vision, he really shouldn't have brought up the $10m figure. All it did was place unrealistic expectations on the KS project and a bit of cynicism from potential backers. If you tell me you need some amount of money that is unrealistic to reach in order to make the game whatever you described it as, I will ask myself, should I back it and risk my money knowing it won't be everything it could be, or just not bother at all? I'd probably take the latter.

I wanted the project to succeed but I wasn't going to put any of my own money into it because I looked at the stretch goals and I think he is taking us for a ride. The amount he's charging for subtitles is ridiculous. There was just nothing on that stretch goal list that made me scream, YES MUST HAVE THIS, DONATE MORE MONEYS!!!!11

Half a million for AI battling, half a million for ragdoll physics, half a million to have fights on higher ground, half a million to do Shenmue 1 and 2 cinema shorts. Really? All you gotta do is take the first two games, and either rip out the cutscenes from the discs, or record them using a capturing device and put them in the game. How does that cost half a million to do? Half a million for 4 mini games.

This is some serious mismanagement of funds if that's how much it costs him to do these things. He should outsource the project to people who can do it much cheaper.

What I think is really going on is, the $2 million goal to get the game funded is a lie. It will cost much more than that. Instead some stretch goal money is going to be put towards the real development costs of the base game. In which case, this is blatant dishonesty, and we have no idea if the $6 million funded will actually be enough to create the base game. He should have been up front about how much the game is really going to cost. Just take 4 of my above listed "half million" stretch goals. Can you honestly tell me that 4 of those goals will cost as much to create as the base game itself?

Part of me wanted this game to succeed and reach the $11m goal, and part of me wanted karma to bite YS in the a-- for being dishonest. But he isn't getting a cent from me.

It's called a stretch goal for a reason. There is no expectation to meet those goals, they exist for the sole purpose of giving the investors additional content should that financial goal be met. It's your responsibility to familiarize yourself with the policies. Only then can you have one of your little temper tantrums and have even a shred of credibility.

It's not a stretch goal. He claims it is but he's deceiving you. There's no way it can cost half a million dollars to do ragdoll physics. Ragdoll can be license from havok for much less than that. More likely $50-100k went into the ragdoll physics and the other $400k goes into making the game. What's really going on is he lied about the $2 million being enough to fund the base game. If the game only received $2 million in funding and did not reach any stretch goals, do you realistically think the game would have gotten made?

@lostn: You obviously know little about game development, simply licensing Havok isn't going to give everything physics, the devs still have to go through and give every physics based object a mass, friction and bouyancy values, center of mass and a lot more, if he creates a highly detailed world, which he will, they are going to have to do a lot of work on physics, that's just part of development, that figure wasn't to license an engine, it was for the work involved in giving everything proper physics.

@mkeezay22: And you still think ragdoll physics will cost them half a million to implement? Then how, pray tell, will they make a full featured game with only 4 times the budget allocated to ragdoll physics? I'm talking rendering the entire game world, environments, characters, objects, textures, writing and scripting, voice acting, AI, sound effects, soundtrack, etc.. all this with a budget of $2 million when ragdoll alone will take half a million?

Explain how the team can be so efficient at creating full featured games when such a small part of the game (ragdoll physics, which games have had for more than 10 years now) will cost a quarter of the budget of the main game? And why the same efficient people can't make ragdoll physics as efficiently as they can make the rest of the game?

If they can't do it for less than half a million, they should outsource it to someone who can. Because games have been able to do ragdoll for a long time now, and I doubt it cost them half a million. Giving everything some values should not cost this much money, especially if there are general values out there that they can already import and tweak as necessary. I want to reiterate that I have seen indie games with ragdoll physics, and I doubt they had a budget of $0.5m just for ragdoll physics.

Answer my question: Do you think the game can be made with $2m, or do you think some of the stretch goal money is being siphoned into the main game? Or do you think there is external funding in addition to KS? And if so, why isn't that funding being put towards stretch goals? In other words, I want to know if you think they've been honest and realistic about the costs of every feature, including the main game.

And finally, tell me if you think it will cost half a million to do cinematic shorts of SM1 and 2. Because that's what they were asking.

I have noticed there are at least several new accounts here such as Anonymous81 that only seem interested in articles and forums related to this, they cheer for this game, spread misinformation while attacking any critics and naysayers, same with Star Citizen for that matter.

Wonder how much of the Kickstarter money is going into astroturfing?

Really many if not most these Kickstarter projects are just straight scams, Gamespot should stop supporting it by posting articles about them but maybe Gamespot is in on it getting some of that sweet Kickstarter money to hype these scams. Just shameful how they are taking fans and gamers for a ride.

@Suikogaiden: Correction: spread information, not misinformation. The only misinformation is this strange misconception that somehow a developer seeking outside funding as well as crowdsourced funding is somehow disingenuous or unethical. It's not. Most if not all Kickstarters also acquire outside funding for their projects. Kickstarter - as the name implies - exists to help KICKSTART projects. Not fund them fully.

If you've read my posts, then you know I'm just a passionate fan here to support a dream I've held on to for the better part of 20 years.

Listen... there is not some conspiracy here. I'm just a passionate gamer who LOVES this series and wants to see it do as well as possible. That's it. There is no ulterior motive.

I haven't attacked anyone or used any ad hominems. I have been nothing but civil. Including to you despite you now attempting to speak of me libelously.

Look, I'm just a fan. No more, no less. I make no bones about it. Hell yes I'm here purely to support Shenmue 3. And I have absolutely no shame about that fact. This means more to me than just a video game. This is something that means something to me, and for me, and many others, is a positive, wonderful thing.

Be happy for us, or politely speak your mind about why you disagree with this, but please don't spread libel about this fandom or me specifically. That's all I ask.

FYI to those confused about the funding situation with Sony, etc.

No one is giving Sony money. As has been stated many times, Sony isn't getting one cent from this campaign. All proceeds go directly to development, except for Kickstarter fees and backer rewards.

Sony is paying for publishing and marketing. They're fronting the bill for porting the game to PS4 and for physical copies on the Kickstarter itself. Shenue 1 & 2 were commercial failures, and this is a 14 year old dead franchise. It would be a huge financial risk for Sony to completely fund its development.

The fact that we need to reach 6.5 million just to get ragdoll physics in the combat should tell you how limited the game's budget is and why the Kickstarter is absolutely essential.

Here's a video explaining why all the hate towards this arrangement with Sony is so completely illogical. I urge those on the fence to watch it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TSKxHv4NWkk

Yu Suzuki was aproached numerous times by publishers with offers to create Shenmue sequel that would be more like GTA and other mainstream games to ensure its sales. Yu turned them all down and stayed true to his vision of what shenmue should be. It take a lot of guts, and people respect him for that. You have to be a man with a strong will and real desire to create in order not to go down the easy road.

@anonymous81:

Sony as publisher still makes money after game is released and that is assuming all the Kickstarter money goes into development which is only an assumption you dont know that, so yeah they still are indirectly profiting off the donations.

Interesting from your history it seems you only come here to cheer for this and attack any critics, Sockpuppet confirmed and reported.

@Suikogaiden: The 50,000 hardest core Shenmue fans are already getting the game for free because they've paid for it with their pledges. That's money neither Sony or Ys are getting once the game launches. What's left is the table scraps. I can't see this game selling like gangbusters. The first two games flopped, and their appeal was to an audience that is now 15 years older than they were.

@Suikogaiden: And a publisher profiting on their investment is bad because... ?

Without Sony's involvement, this would have nowhere near the exposure it has had, nor would it be coming to any platform other than PC. Sony had no financial stake or motivation to do this in the first place. They are taking a risk doing this at all. I should HOPE they DO profit from it. That means we get more Shenmue games!

It's not an assumption that Sony isn't seeing any money from the Kickstarter. It's an assertion, straight from the mouth of Yu Suzuki, the lead developer: "Not one cent" will go to Sony. Unless you simply believe that to be an outright lie which, while that's your prerogative, would be a pretty bold assumption to make on your own part.

I struggle to see how any of this is a bad thing.

Yes I came here to support this project I've passionately cried out for for more than 14 years. Is there some rule against that? Or an ethical problem with it? Again I fail to see what the problem with ANY of this is. This is a wonderful, positive thing that has happened for a community of fans that had been orphaned by the industry. Can't you just be happy for us?

@Suikogaiden: In January 2014 Sony had 79% chanse to go bunkropt by the end of 2015. Do you even read news, dude? They are not swimming in the money pool because of PS4 - they're still exist only because of it. Their gaming branch is the single one of their branches that doing good, as corporation -- they're barely existing.

@Suikogaiden: Oh, wait... You're obviously don't even know that it isn't Sony's game, do you?
