Shenmue Is Getting Turned Into Anime Series, Inclusion Of Forklifts Unclear

The cult-favorite adventure series had an 18-year gap between games, with Shenmue 3 releasing in 2019.

Hand-to-hand combat and plenty of forklift action are coming to Crunchyroll. The cult-favorite Shenmue game series is getting turned into an anime series with original creator Yu Suzuki serving as executive producer.

Announced during the Virtual Crunchyroll Expo on September 5, the Shenmue anime series is a collaboration with Adult Swim and will be directed by One-Punch Man's Chikara Sakurai. The 13-episode series doesn't have a release date yet, but Shenmue fans are used to waiting a long time.

Now Playing: We Play Shenmue 3 | GameSpot Live

After the original two games released on Dreamcast, it took another 18 years to get Shenmue 3. That likely only happened because of a Kickstarter campaign that still stands as the biggest ever for a video game, attracting more than $6 million in donations. The game took nearly two years longer to develop than was initially planned and didn’t perform particularly well outside of its Kickstarter campaign sales.

Shenmue 3 released to somewhat lukewarm reviews back in 2019, with its gameplay and visual style largely unchanged from its predecessors. That certainly appealed to longtime fans, but it also made the game feel oddly dated on modern platforms. In GameSpot's Shenmue 3 review, critic Heidi Kemps praised the supporting cast's personalities and the game's side activities but found the combat to be "archaic" and the story poorly paced.

Shenmue is far from the only video game anime or anime-style series currently in the works. The Castlevania Netflix series finished its third season this year, and adaptations of Dragon's Dogma and Devil May Cry are also in development. In Devil May Cry's case, it actually won't be the first anime adaptation of the series. A separate one was created in 2007.

So the story in the anime can also remain unfinished?

It would be really cool to see a live action series, instead of an anime cartoon! Damn.

As much as I've loved Shenmue since I got my hands on the first game for Christmas in 2000 and Shenmue II in 2002, I was letdown with Shenmue III, mainly with the pacing and story; it didn't go anywhere and both sections of the game had you literally doing the same thing to obtain a move, which, I was thinking Ryo would use against Lan Di, even though he was still not strong enough to defeat him.

In all honesty, I hope this anime does well enough to continue more seasons and just finish off the story this way; fans back in the 2000's were hoping this route would've been chosen to complete Ryo's story or in book form. Unless SEGA helps fund Shenmue IV and brings back the charm the first two had (soundtrack, official arcade games, etc), then I'm worried of a video game for the next installment if it's under Ys Net (sorry Yu Suzuki) and Deep Silver.

Oh God... No. Can you imagine the terrible dialogue and lack of things going on? Anime is already slow and boring. All Shenmue can do is make it even more slow and boring.

Well, I know how the first episode will go:

"Have you seen a Chinese guy?" for 30 minutes.

I just hope it will bring enough awareness of the series to where they can actually put real money into a game and give it the treatment it deserves (it was the pioneer of the open-world game for god's sake). I could not believe how bad the combat system was in 3. I was looking forward to that most of all and it was a tremendous let down. The first 2 weren't perfect fighting systems by any stretch of the imagination but the 3rd was just awful. Fans of the series were looking for a more modernized game and were given mere whiffs of what could have been and more of the same. Moving forward they should consider actually rebooting the series so they can start from the ground up.

Contrarily this anime could also mean that any hope of future Shenmue games is now gone.

Love this series, hopefully we get more story than what the games covered.

Why can't you dingleberries get it through your thick skulls?

SHENMUE IS TRASH.

It was trash in 1999/2000 when it came out and it still is trash in 2020.

Stop supporting garbage.

@suprsolider: It's not for everyone in the same way Shadow of Destiny is not for everyone, but I had a great time playing these games. Playing without a guide, it's like a detective game.

@kintoneo: Always loved Shadow of Destiny (I even own the PSP version). Cool little trivia about that game: Junko Kawano wrote the story, who was also helped with multiple Suikoden games. There is also a spiritual successor of sorts to Shadow of Destiny on the Nintendo DS called Time Hollow.

@kintoneo: Honestly shocked at the Shadow of Destiny pull there. I've very rarely heard anyone mention that title. Kudo's on that alone.
