Shippin' Out: December 11-15: Zelda GC, lots of Wii

The GameCube receives perhaps its last notable title as Nintendo's new system ramps up with new releases.

In March of 2004, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker director Eiji Aonuma referenced a "Wind Waker 2" in a presentation at the Game Developers Conference. That project eventually became The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and helped launch Nintendo's Wii last month. The original GameCube version sees release this week and appears ready to go down as the last notable title for Nintendo's aging system.

As Nintendo's previous system goes the way of the dodo, the Wii is entrenching itself at retailers around the country with a slew of new releases. In addition to a quartet of Virtual Console games--Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine, Gunstar Heroes, Ice Hockey, and Alien Crush-- the Wii sees a handful of titles for all age levels refreshing store shelves.

Konami's first-person hide-and-seek game Elebits offers a bit of E for Everyone-rated entertainment, while the E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older crowd can kick back with new games like Super Swing Golf and Chicken Little: Ace in Action. The cartoonish military shooter Metal Slug Anthology and World Series of Poker: Tournament of Champions have been given T for Teen ratings, while older gamers might enjoy the first-person shooter Far Cry Vengeance, rated M for Mature.

Things are mostly quiet on the Sony front. The PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 get one title each in the form of College Hoops 2K7 and Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII, respectively. The PlayStation Portable is slightly busier, playing host to Blitz: Overtime and Shrek Smash and Crash. The Xbox 360 new-release section is similarly quiet this week, with only Rapala Trophies, Star Trek: Legacy, and the Xbox Live Arcade game Assault Heroes to call its own.

This week's new releases are listed below (list taken from retailer information--actual dates may vary).

I guess this is the end of the line for Gamecube. I have already given away the system 2 years ago to my nieces and nephews and they totally loved the games for it. I ended up purchasing a PS2 so I could play the Final Fantasy games and its library of games. Sadly no Mario or Metroid or Link. The good news is, I was one of the lucky ones to get a Wii this past month and realize that when you buy a Wii, you also get an instant Gamecube. The best thing about is that the games that I have missed are dirt cheap like: 1. Paper Mario 2. Pikmin 1 and 2 3. Prince of Persia series 4. Viewtiful Joe 1 and 2 5. Soul Calibur 2 6. Zelda: Wind waker 7. Metroid 1 and 2 8. Mario Kart 9. Mario Tennis I just got my component cables and these games on my HDTV are very clean and clear to look at compared to my PS2. So if you do have the Wii and wanted to experience what Nintendo has to offer, it would be a good idea to head to your local video store and buy a used wavebird and a slew of quality games.

The Swan Song for the Cube, Good for Nintendo for releasing Zelda Twilight princess for Gamecube. After all it was supposed to be released ages ago. At least Nintendo honoured it's loyal fans. I owned a Gamecube and as a System it was OK, Maybe Nintendo will do better with the Wii.

I don't understand why so many people hate on the Wii version of Twilight Princess. I couldn't imagine playing it without motion controls anymore to tell you the truth. I played Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker the other day just to see the difference, and it just felt restricted and archaic. Nothing beats the preciseness of your own hand! Is it just because of the fact people don't want to let go the the Cube? Believe me, guys. The Wii and its version of Twilight Princess are well worth the $300. So what if the world is reversed? You wouldn't be able to tell the difference if there weren't two versions.

Nintendo needs some new gems. most young (10 year old)gamers only know nintendo icons from ssb and don't even know of the classic gem.s remaking them won't do any good. Nintendo should make some new single player games for those franchises. like what ever happened to donkey kong. sure there is the bongo games but doesn't anyone miss the good old dkcs.

Ah, Gamecube, we hardly knew ye. . .except as a practice swing between the final years of whiffing of the N64 and the proven hole-in-one of the DS.

"LexLas Gamecube has been awesome. It went out like a true champion, a title like Twighlight Princess makes it unforgettable on top of everything. I will still play it unless I get a Wii for Christmas, I take it that the games are backwards compatible ???" They sure are. I wouldn't recommend buying Twilight Princess for the GC especially if you believe you're getting a Wii. I have the Wii version, and I can't imagine the GC version being any more fun without the Wiimote.

Wow, no love for the PS3. I see only one release this week, why is that? BTW a large number of the Wii releases are VC games, I don't think a game should be counted as launching twice.

I'm most looking forward to Elebits on the Wii. I may pick up the Metal Slug Anthology and Super Swing Golf when they are cheap enough. I'm taking a wait and see approach to these three games, depending most on how they are reviewed and how their pricing goes.

im happy when there are only like 10 games that are good during this season ... it actually leaves some $$ in my pocket and one can never play 30 great titles unless him/her truely has no life.

This year has to be one of the weakest Christmas release schedules in recent memory. :/ Only a few key titles have really stood out these past few months.
