Is Joe Montana teasing a new football game?

Joe Montana might be getting ready to announce a new football game more than 20 years after the release of Joe Montana Football for the Sega Genesis.

The hall of fame quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers posted the above image to his official Twitter account along with hashtags saying “you’ve waited long enough” and “Joe Montana Football 16.”

The image could be a promotion for the Legends of Candlestick, a flag football game taking place in San Francisco today staring Montana and other retired NFL players, but the uniform and the image itself are inconsistent with the rest of the marketing for the event.

It’s been hard if not impossible to compete with Electronic Arts’ Madden games since 2004, when the publisher secured an exclusive licensing deal with the NFL to use its teams and players.

If whatever Montana is teasing is in fact a new game, it would have to work around that limitation unless it was being made with EA. The company, incidentally, also developed the original Joe Montana Football game for Sega.

I just want a good Pro or even college football game that gives you total control over the plays, roster, players, etc. And have it on PC for freakin once! The last Madden for PC was 2008!

Used to play the shiat out of Joe Montana Football 94' on Genesis.....kicked the ass of all Madden games. EA needs to drop the NFL license ASAP so games like NFL2K can re-emerge......was 10x better than Madden.

I mean, I understand...It makes sense that they wouldn't strive for an insanely impressive product given they don't have competition. Just sucks for true gamers. The NFL has said that the exclusive rights only "last for a couple more years". Seeing as how this is called "Joe Montana 16" and it is only currently 2014, there are a couple of possibilities for what could come to pass.

A.) EA renews its exclusive deal with the NFL and this Joe Montana game (if it really is a game) will be with fictional players.

B.) EA opts to not renew figuring that nobody will be ready to take on the task of producing their own game while lowering the cost of doing business with the NFL and losing minimal customers due to brand loyalty and recognition.

This will probably be very similar to All-Pro Football 2k8. It's just a shame that 2K failed to make a good game when they had their chance at a big comeback. This game will be another chance for a developer to spit in the face of EA and I hope this game destroys Madden.

<< LINK REMOVED >> APF2K8 was the greatest football game I've ever played. It wasn't wrapped up in licensing fees, or all kinds of fancy features that don't matter. It was a solid football game that reminded me of SNES era football games but gave the player absolute control over every aspect of the game.

long live 2K5 still deeper more immersive than any madden to date!!!

2K5 franchise mode is far deeper and more customizable than any madden since the PS2

best part the game......announcers where actually calling the game am playing lol hahaha

madden is funny i throw for 400yrds 4 TDS hit 80% of my passes win 34 to 10......next game sims says the QB played horrible and they lost lets see how he handles it this game!

Someone needs to get some of the folks at Rockstar to help create a non-infringing Satire League Football game with all the real world players counterparts, except different enough not to bring upon a lawsuit from EA and the NFL. Just focus on the core gameplay the most, and add a little zaniness to the players and themes and have at it!

Like would be like me never having heard of Joe Namath b/c he came well before my time, it just seems so unspeakable.

I haven't bought a football game since EA monopolized the NFL license. But money is free speech now... NFL2K released a better football game at a lower price point AND it had much better features and interface. Whatever happened to a level playing field? let your product speak for itself against the competition EA!
