"Significant, Temporary" Layoffs Affect Dev Behind Xbox One/PC Game Gigantic

Motiga cuts jobs as it continues negotiations with partners for further funding.

Motiga, the startup studio behind the upcoming Xbox One and PC game Gigantic, today announced a round of temporary layoffs that impacted a "significant percentage" of the studio's staffers. It is unclear exactly how many jobs were affected, however.

"Our financial situation is such that we are unable to continue supporting the entirety of the studio at this time," the developer's CEO Chris Chung said in a post on its website. "Though we are in active and promising discussions with a number of potential investors, the timing for those negotiations extends beyond the resources we have to maintain the staffing required to continue development on Gigantic."

Motiga will continue to support Gigantic and its game services "for as long as we are able." However, the studio warned that it cannot make any promises regarding the future of Gigantic.

"The reality is that a decision of this magnitude will impact all departments across the studio, an impact that will be felt by our community of beta testers as the services they depend on will operate without the key staff on hand to support those services," Chung explained.

Chung did not specify what partners Motiga is in discussions with for further funding.

"It is of course our goal, and our deep hope, that we are able to secure the necessary funding in the near future in order to bring Gigantic to market," the executive explained.

Looking ahead, Chung said he's hopeful that Motiga will be able to re-hire the affected staffers.

This is the second round of major layoffs at Motiga in recent months. In December, the Bellevue, Washington-based studio parted ways with 16 staffers.

Gigantic was supposed to launch in 2015, but was delayed to 2016 in part because of feedback that Motiga received from the game's closed testing periods.

The game, which supports cross-platform play, pits two teams of five players against each other in a single map. Each team has a guardian, an enormous creature that can move around the map and possesses its own skillset. The goal is to destroy the enemy team's guardian. Killing enemy heroes powers up the killer's guardian and eventually prompts it to go on a rampage, wounding the enemy guardian and providing an opening for the team to deal some extra damage to it.

MS please just buy the IP. They need the motivation to know that Gigantic isn't going anywhere. It'll be finished hopefully.

Such a shame for a small company. Perhaps if it was also coming out on PS4 the extra possible sales could have mitigated this!!! You wonder if it was ready for release, but M$ demanded they up the quality to the max or 900p in X1 case. Which pushed it back, causing the issues.

@xrizz1066: Since game is still in development, your comment makes no sense. As it is not for sale, adding another platform would not increase revenue (since there is none at the moment for the game is not for sale) and add additional development costs. And it was feedback from beta testers, not Microsoft that caused the delay.

@dlCHIEF58: it may be in development and been ready to release, then m$ in their desperation to close gap with ps4, say they want increase in images quality. Something they said to other companies. So they then spend more time with no income, hence having to lay staff off. If they also had possibility of selling on the ps4 which much bigger installer base. They may have been able to get extensions on overdrafts, extends loans etc.

@xrizz1066: Microsoft is worth 340 billion dollars. sony...... 32 billion and still taking losses..

There is a reason sony keeps bring up console sales (which make the company very little to no profit) cos they have nothing else to talk about.

How about you tell sony to fix the garbage called psn before talking about another company!!

@iaruelas: m$ is worth so much coz it was lucky getting in 1st with Windows os , since then they've struggled of make anything of significant. Just rehash their os . While Sony innovates and invents, like the Blu ray in your vcr?? Psn dose have issues but so does Xbox too. End if the day Sony has just about sorted out its finances, after the global breakdown. As for nothing to talk about, how about the new double camera system that apples to star using! Again making and inventing. While m$ just copy n lower quality.

this game went into development hell as soon as it became a Xbox/Windows10 exclusive. i have been playing the beta for about 8 months now. they were set for a PC open beta in summer 2015 then MS i believe made a deal with their funding company to make a Xbox one version. that version took primary focus, then they cut the PC testing off to focused all their resources in that version, then the PC version suffered. now they have now funding, MS is not helping and beta players are moving on. t

@Dcyple3000: why should MS help? It's not their fault if the company is bad with money.

Hmmm? Did Scalebound and Recore have problems functioning with Xbox as did Gigantic? Been anticipating full release of this great game. All those years of work from some good people and now this.

Wow...before the year gets started 3 Xbox One console exclusives (Scalebound, Recore and now Gigantic) gets delayed...that's crazy

Meanwhile, the competition releases The Witness, FireWatch and pretty soon SFV.

People are going to start calling it the "DelayBox One" if this keeps up lol

@iaruelas: Amplitude and Gravity Rush remastered were just released and neither is on PC.

And if you want to talk about the last 7 months, I don't Until Dawn, MLB The Show 2015, Tearaway Unfolded, Fat Princess Adventures...

So while you're telling me to try harder...how about you STOP trying all together lol

@louixiii: LMAO, someone suffers from selective short term memory loss as that cannot remember all the PS4 titles that have gone through delays. How's The Last Guardian coming?

@dlCHIEF58: The Last Guardian wasn't delayed for the PS4...it was cancelled for the PS3, then re-announced for the PS4, so who's the one suffering from memory loss?

@louixiii: Indeed. I picked up Firewatch for MIcrosoft Windows, and I picked up the Witness for Microsoft Windows. Will be picking up Witness for Xbox One as well when it is released. Developer for Firewatch has stated an Xbox One version is likely as well.

Avoid Firewatch on the PS4 btw, it is a performance nightmare.

@kvally: I just played it for a few hours and I haven't experienced any issues yet.

And if you have them for PC (which is the best version), why bother with the console versions?

@louixiii: This game was delayed last year lol wym. The PS4 already has the title "IndieStation 4" so a nickname for the X1 would make em even.

@freeryu: Not mad, but they were just showing this game off new footage last week and now they're saying that they can't complete it until they get more funding..so technically, there's a chance that they may never complete it. That's crazy.
