Konami's Silent Scope light-gun shooter epitomized the big-cabinet arcade scene when it launched in the late-'90s, given that it tasked players with getting behind the sight of a substantive--if not life-sized--replica of a sniper rifle. Now that experience will be filed down to fit on one of the smallest gaming devices. Konami announced today that Silent Scope is "coming soon" to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

No Caption Provided

As with the original Silent Scope, players will be tasked with saving the President of the United States, as well as the rest of the First Family, from a terrorist cell that has established its operations in Chicago. Armed with a sniper rifle, players assume the role of the world's top sniper, picking off terrorists one at a time to accomplish their goals.

Those hoping for a sniper-rifle peripheral to augment their iPhone experience will, sadly, be disappointed. Konami has converted the game's controls to make use of the device's touch screen. Silent Scope on Apple's platforms will include a number of different modes, including Arcade and Training, with Arcade mode offering Story, Shooting Range, and Time Attack options.

Silent Scope for the iPhone won't be the first time that Konami has brought its arcade rail shooter to mobile devices. In addition to a number of console installments, Silent Scope took position to fairly positive reviews on the Game Boy Advance in 2002.

cool, now if only apple would make it so you don't have to pay $3004 to use a phone for 3 years, well that's the price in Canada anyway. 224(iphone with tax)+2780(mandatory 3 year plan with tax)=3004 (including taxes from my region which is 5% and 7%), and that's assuming you don't go over the plan. way to expensive for me.

It aint the best ipod, phone or portable gaming platform but its the only one to do all 3 to a good level, and throw in the *huge* 3rd party support for the apps and only a fool could call themself a geek / gadget addict and not own one, regardless of whether its "cool" or not to have it. I disagree. I think that the Android platform also does all three to a quite good level, and even though it's less mature as a platform, it already has quite a lot of app support, since google isn't throttling apps (with the exception of tethering apps, but that was t-mo's decision.) I love Apple's tech, but as a company, they make too many decisions that I find far too vile to allow myself to be one of their consumers. For example, I cannot get behind a company that believes that it should do what it wants, over what the consumer wants. (Steve Jobs has said this on at least one occasion.) However, as far as the game is concerned, it sounds like a blast, especially considering I loved this game as a kid. The only thing that I'm curious about is how you are going to be able to quickly zoom/unzoom, since it's kind of necessary. Hopefully they decide to bring this to Android too...

@REA comment, Dude that's just dumb logic all the way around. The iPhone is probably one of the best if not the best electronic device I've bought ever. For anyone who has an iPhone and you want a really cool cheap game try Flight Control. Its so simple and extremely addictive. Ivan I agree with you I think its time GS adds a category for the iPhone's games. IGN already has one.

Thats amusing someone down there commented about both the Razr and the iPhone, the last 2 phones I happen to have bought. I too used to avoid things to not be one of the "sheep". Apple stuff used to be cool to geeks because it wasnt cool to the mainstream, now it's the exact opposite. However, every iPhone hater I've shown my phone to has gone green with envy. It aint the best ipod, phone or portable gaming platform but its the only one to do all 3 to a good level, and throw in the *huge* 3rd party support for the apps and only a fool could call themself a geek / gadget addict and not own one, regardless of whether its "cool" or not to have it.

that game was awesome, wonder how good it will work on the iphone REA24409, do you own an xbox 360, ps3, wii, shoes, clothes, a computer, sunglasses, or a car? Because i hear the majority of people have those things. By choosing not to buy something because too many others have it, you are admitting that you pay just as much attention to those things as the people who buy them just to be cool. If you really want to live "outside of the box" try buying things because you like them, regardless of what others have done. End of lecture, class dismissed.

REA, you're using the internet. I guess that doesn't count though because only EVERYONE uses it.

The iPhone is a cool phone but I would never buy it, why you ask? Simple, everybody has it, I don't like following the crowd. It's like the Razor, everyone had it but I didn't want to get it because so many other people did. You gotta live outside of the box ;)

The iPhone/iPod Touch needs more substantial games like this, and less garbage. This is a step in the right direction.

I've never played a game on iPhone / iPod Touch that wasn't garbage, or at least didn't have awful controls.
