Sims head gets Second Life

Rod Humble leaves EA's Play label to become CEO of virtual world developer-publisher Linden Lab.

It's a safe bet to say that this Christmas, Rod Humble received a signing-bonus check in his stocking. Today, Second Life developer-publisher Linden Lab announced that the now-ex-Electronic Arts executive is its new CEO, effective immediately.

Linden Lab's new CEO, Rod Humble.
Linden Lab's new CEO, Rod Humble.

"I have a long standing interest in how the boundaries of society and economics change as communications evolve in new ways," said Humble in a statement. "Second Life is unique: it sits at the intersection of virtual worlds, avatars, and human contact."

Prior to his new gig, Humble had more than a little experience with virtual worlds and avatars. As executive vice president of EA's Play label, he oversaw development and publishing of The Sims, history's top-selling PC game series. Before that, Humble was a vice president at Sony Online Entertainment, where he headed product development of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game EverQuest.

MMORPGs are similar to the experience offered by Second Life, which will be the focus of Humble's new gig at Linden Lab. The virtual world has the biggest virtual economy in the real world, with over $150 million worth of goods exchanged in the third quarter of 2010 alone.

The only thing I find interesting about SL is the roleplay. It's a lot better than sitting around in a chat room with no visual aid...

Why would I want a 'second life' when mine is already more than enough to handle?

SL is basically just an MMO with no real point to it. So it's pretty much exactly like an MMO... or real life.

"It is nothing but, a cash cow for people to milk people for money for virtual garbage." Unfortunately, just as in the real world, there are some people who are out just to make a buck, selling junk (many real life companies do the same thing). You just have to know what is worth purchasing, or you can just use freebies and not purchase anything if you just want to look around. _____________________ Little Lost Linden << LINK REMOVED >>

"second life was designed specifically for hobos." Just curious in what way? I always consider Second Life being developed for those on the cutting edge of technology with cyberpunk roots, etc. In fact, Second Life was originally designed to be the realworld equivalent of the Metaverse in the cyberpunk novel called Snowcrash. Since Second Life can be anything you want it to be, however, if you have a hobo fetish or enjoy being around hobos, there are probably Second Life hobo clubs you could join. I know that there is a Second Life railroad system inworld, but I am not certain there are any groups that celebrate the National Hobo Convention. I heard the food wasn't very good at the conventions however. People would complain that the food wasn't fresh or something. << LINK REMOVED >> Anything is possible in SL, so it isn't completly out of the realm of possibility. I haven't spent very much time riding on the train system so I don't have much experience with it. I do know it was just updated recently though. In fact, the "Golden Spike" was recently just driven in the Crumb region in Second Life: << LINK REMOVED >> If you are into trains as a hobby for instance, you might like to be in the group who develops the SL railroad. I used to have a Lionel trainset once upon a time, but that was the extent of it. Little Lost Linden << LINK REMOVED >>

"i tried second life and just couldn't get into it." It takes a little while to get the hang of it. One thing is for sure, at the very least, ditch your radio's and mp3 players. Enter SL and at least check out the club scene. The music is amazing and the dj's are unlike any you have heard in the real world. Right now I am at the best gothic industrial SL club and you will not find better music or dj performances anywhere. Little Lost Linden << LINK REMOVED >>

Hey lostlinden: '2011 is going to be a breakout year for Second Life.' -- I think this is great news: I always have been very much in favor of Second Life which in my opinion has simply been in advance of its time. In reality it is neither web browser nor game nor social meeting point _only_ but rather a mixture of all this, a beautiful place where curious, playful people can discover a lot more than just photos of their pals, for instance, art exhibitions or experimental music. At some places there is also a lot of live animation with (virtual) dance and DJs, so this is why I actually wondered why GameSpot had no virtual representation there. There is surely an economic aspect in all this (so the first time I read about Second Life has been in the magazine The Economist), but in the moment it is far too sparely populated to be really profitable, and the same is true for the supposedly 'erotic' touch :-(comparable to a porno shop in the desert), which is about the same as for all ads. So up to now it has rather been an idealistic undertaking by freebies freaks like the Linux' ones or sort of a play ground for students of graphic arts or architecture...

I thought Second Life has gone the way of Friender and MySpace. Surprised it's still around. This guy is probably just doing it for a huge paycheck. He is a CEO, not a developer. CEO's job is more about creating relationships, networking, building the team and raising funds. I bet Second Life has new plans in development and needs "big names" to put those plans in action. It's all about who you know when it comes to CEOs...

"@DiscGuru101 Posting a want ad for work on Gamespot is kind of like fishing in a waterpark. You aren't going to catch anything but irritated people." Don't worry DiscGuru, I'm not irritated. I thought it was humorous. If you are looking for SL work though, the best place to check might be << LINK REMOVED >>. @dennishfieldman - Which is why I wanted to like it. If Rod Humble can convert it into a Direct X11 experience with user friendly design tools, I will be back to build worlds and gear. In fact: Rod Humble, I will gladly come work for you. Email me! I have environmental art experience and a burning desire to build vast atmospheric (interactive) regions for others to explore.

This is an interesting development. SecondLife is not a game. It doesn't appeal to children as a shooter. It's a virtual world whose content is entirely created by participants rather than the developer. It's a Social experience, and that includes a good bit of erotica (to be discreet). It's a business experience, a good many Fortune 500 (including IBM) have firm consistent presence. It's also a world from which you can pull a profit in US dollars. For the last year I paid my CoH and SWG accounts from SL proceeds. The very nature of depending on "player" content presents challenges, which if overcome could propel SL to a place next to Facebook or Youtube. And contrary to some comments here - it's Free. And you can absolutely take money OUT without putting any IN, though many prefer to speed things up a bit. Money is necessary if you BUY things for which Money is necessary (like real estate). But dollars are NOT necessary to make Linden.

In way I can't blame him for leaving the EA and the Play Label not that I'm a fan of Second Life. I think the pressure of trying to to make a great with a audience as picky as the sim community is impossibe to achieve. I personally will not play the sims anymore if they are planning to go back to the old format, or if Rod Humble firing was due to fan complaining that he ruin their game. I had to admit the sims 3 wasn't as good as it could been but I did like that they tried new things. Now I fear the sims will go backward not forward.

"Second Life has only 1 problem, it's expensive fees." This is a very common misconception that most people have, and I'm really not sure why. I think most people think the premium 'fee accounts' are needed to get anything out of SL, but that is really not true at all. Most people who play Second Life play for free without paying any real world fees. You can work inworld to earn Lindens or win Linden dollars from free contests and next to free gambling (inworld sploders) without having to pay any real world fees. The real world fees are only needed to do things like purchasing land. If you need to only rent land, you can do so with Lindens earned from your SL career\businesses or from your gambling winnings (sploders or Zynga) and many times from the generosity of others. Many people in SL end up giving their hand me downs away for free (clothing, furniture, fun items, etc.) Just wanted to clear that up. 2011 is going to be a breakout year for Second Life. If you haven't checked it out in a while, now is a great time to do so. Once mesh imports migrate from the beta grid to the main grid, there is probably going to be a huge influx of new residents, and also, the Microsoft Kinect will most likely be added as an alternative method used to control your Second Life avatar in 2011 as the PC Kinect drivers are already available online. Should be a fun time this year. I can hardly wait. Little Lost Linden << LINK REMOVED >>

Second Life has only 1 problem, it's expensive fees. It actually has great potential, but most aren't willing to deal out 50 or $100 bucks a month when they could be playing something simpler and, frankly, better. If you lined up third party developers to help work on and expand Second Life, and only charge something like $100 per year, you might have something...

For people who don't understand what S.L. is, think of the title. "Second + Life". You can lead a virtual life on the website, doing things you might do in the real world. It's an escape from your normal day job.
