Singapore top SSFIV player wins main event of EVO 2k13

DM Mad Catz's Ho Kun Xian fights against Japanese, Korean, and American top players to earn first place in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.

Update: The original article previously listed Eduardo "PR Balrog" Perez-Frangie's under the Mad Catz brand when it should have been Evil Geniuses. The article has been amended to reflect the change.

The small island of Singapore can now add Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition to its list of eSports game achievements.

Singaporean tournament player Ho Kun Xian (who goes by the game handle "DM Mad Catz Xian") won and took first place in the SSFIV: AE tournament at the Evolution Championship Series 2013 (EVO 2k13) tournament held at the Paris Las Vegas Hotel in Nevada.

Using his main character Gen, he fought against Japan's top Akuma player, Hajime "Tokido" Taniguchi. The remaining players in the top eight finals included Eduardo "EG PR Balrog" Perez-Frangie, Lee "Infiltration" Seon-woo, Sako "HORI Sako" Naoto, Bruce "AVM GamerBee" Hsiang, Tatsuya "Haitani" Haitani, and Daigo Umehara.

Other notable victories included Job "FS EMP Clocker" Figueroa, who won first place in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 against Justin Wong; Philip "VxG.EMP KDZ" Atkinson, who was triumphant in Injustice: Gods Among Us; and Joseph "Mango" Marquez, who was the winner in the Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament.

Xian was also the winner of the SSFIV: AE tournament in the Community Effort Orlando 2013 event held last month. Check out GameSpot for more EVO 2k13 coverage.

Xian played very calm and patiently. Almost like Gen would fight in real life. A wise and patient old man.

@CRAPCOM1926 No, he's still one of the best player in the world. It's just that every one in the top eight just got better skill-wise through loads of training.

I think if PR Rog didn't run into Infiltration or vice versa one of them would have won Evo.

A lot of people posts to complain a game that they dont even understand (haters).

I was really sad on Daigo's performance, 4 YOLO DP's against Tokido and vs Infiltration he continued to throw Hadoukens after poke with Cr. MK. while Infiltration continued to Focus dash and punish.

Xian deserved this EVO, he mastered a very technical and hard character to master.

Don't know how ANYONE could do well in SSFIV. The game was broken. Specials rarely worked. It was like Street Fighter 1 all over again.

@DrKill09 What are you talking about. How do specials rarely work? The game isn't broken. There are maybe 3 or 4 characters that are particularly good, but it's beatable. It is a great game.

i mean Smash Bros Melee was there and Injustice still managed to be the most unbalanced and casual game there...

@Chai_Tea You know, I don't see why people like you are laughing at these people being called "Pro Athletes: in gaming. I mean agree it needs to be called something else, but I don't see why they are any less skilled than a "Pro Sports" player.

They are the best of the best at their respected genre, and we shouldn't laugh at them. Are they physical athletes? No most of them probably are not. Are they ESports athletes? They sure as heck are, and if you are honestly making a living playing games, and need to travel to countries in order to make more money, then I see problem giving out Visa to these people.

It seems a lot of the hate here is that most people replying to these comments ar

@SamehH99 @Lionheart8472 @Chai_Tea There are differences though. Pro athletes are also restricted in things they may consume or have in their systems while they are performing. Could you imagine fighting game tournaments if things that increase performance were banned? I mean caffeine raises awareness. Anything that could enhance reflexes or awareness could be considered performance enhancing drugs.

wow great match! lol for a supposed Mid Tier fighter he did awesome things. I mean your average fighter couldn't do what he did but it shows that with enough practice and patience you could make who ever you want into a top tier fighter.

I think it shows that Capcom did an amazing job at balancing the game to the point that anyone can win with any character. Can't really use the excuse "I lost because X is weaker".

Was hoping for Tokido to win, but then that would have given Capcom even more reason to nerf-rape akuma some more. So I'm happy for Xian.

@ElDuderino1 Infiltration paying Rog back with Hakan stole the show just as well. Dropping your main and going with Hakan in the losers semi-final showed some balls

@Gen007 @ElDuderino1 Agreed. I do think Rog vs Xian would have made for a more exciting finals though. Not that the finals were dull, but Tokido was content to play keep away with air fireballs the entire time lol. But yeah Xian was unbeatable, no one was going to take him out (maybe Infiltration had a chance).

@Gen007 @AdaptttttttYou have no idea how much Daigo cares. He trained himself specifically for this tournament for a long time. He is without a question best Ryu player in the world, no contest.

Yes, his main goal is not winning, but that doesn't mean he doesn't care. He is just on another level of competitive gaming. If he was a Akuma or Cammy user, he'd certainly win more tournaments, but that wouldn't as fun.

@blueleon70 @Gen007 @Adapttttttt Out of literally thousands of players, he finished Top 8... He can probably decently coast to the last winners and losers bracket. Thats how dominating he still is.
