Six Flags Virtual Reality Coasters Coming This Year, Watch the Crazy Video Here

"This changes everything."

Big-time theme park company Six Flags today announced what it's calling "North America's first virtual reality roller coaster." Six Flags isn't building a new coaster, but instead will let riders wear a Samsung Gear VR headset on existing coasters ("some of our most popular coasters") to experience the ride in a new way. Check out the announcement video below.

The ride is called New Revolution and it will be available at nine Six Flags parks. Here is the official description:

"You will be transported to a futuristic battle to save planet earth from an alien invasion. Co-pilot your own fighter jet as you strap in for air-to-air combat. As your virtual plane ascends out of a secret bunker, test fire your weapon using the world’s first-ever interactive gameplay technology on a roller coaster. Then race through the city where you'll battle drones to reach and destroy a mother ship."

For Six Flags' three Superman virtual reality coasters, the VR experience will showcase a "comic-book world" featuring a battle between Superman and evil Lexbots.

"This changes everything," Six Flags said on the New Revolution's landing page.

Some people already get sick on rollercoasters, so you might think riding a real coaster, while in VR, would dial up the intensity even more. It might, but Six Flags says it's not worried about motion sickness.

"Because the visuals on the virtual reality screen are synched precisely with the coaster's drops, twists, and turns, there is no motion sickness as some might expect," it said. "As you see the 3D movements through your headgear, your body experiences the identical motion of the coaster, creating an unbelievably thrilling experience. Unlike watching the visuals while standing still, there should be no adverse effect."

Six Flags season pass members can get a first run at the new virtual reality coasters during technical rehearsals to be held this spring. More details, including a full list of participating parks, are available in this FAQ.

I plan to just stand at the base of the coaster with a net to catch all the sweet hardware falling from the sky.

Ya, that's what you need. To be on a speeding bullet and not be able to see what's actually in front of you so when you crash and die for real you won't know it.

Pure genius.

It's not wholly simulated. Only what you see is simulated, but you're actually on a real coaster so all physical sensations are real.

Half the fun of rollercoasters is the social aspect, like, actually seeing your friends and the other passengers react to the rollercoaster ride. Yet they expect people to strap a thing in front of their eyes, effectively removing that aspect entirely. Amazing.

@Tiwill44: Exactly. If we ever reach the point where VR is a daily driver for entertainment and work it will be quite a pathetic sight.

One of these has just been opened in the UK. Haven't been on ot yet, but it is a hybrid (actual roller coaster where passengers wear VR headsets)

No actual threat of dying = boring rollercoaster.

@Wesleypipes77: You're still on a rollercoaster, just that the things you see around you are different because you're looking into the headset. Besides, there's no real threat of dying on a normal roller coaster. It's statistically safer than flying in a plane, driving a car, getting on a train, or even just walking down a street for that matter.

@Wesleypipes77: Still safer than flying or driving. Seriously, fatal roller coaster accidents are very few and far between. Oh and I have been stuck upside down on a roller coaster, although not on one where people have died :-)

@domiddian: Ya, I hear what you're saying. What I'm getting at though is that on a real roller coaster you're strapped in to this mechanical contraption winging and looping you around all over the place and safe as they may be in actuality, part of the thrill is that you feel like you might die if anything went wrong. On a virtual roller coaster as well made as it may be, and admittedly they could be a lot of fun, there would be things they could simulate that are impossible in real life. You ultimately know that you're about as safe as you could be, snug and cozy inside a metal box with a screen mounted to a moving platform. Doesn't that sound boring to you??

Let me just say I'm not surprised, and I don't doubt this will be the future. But I do personally prefer the idea of a physical rollercoaster. I like VR a lot, but have done a VR rollercoaster and I think there are better applications and the physical experience of rollercoasters can't yet be replaced (yes, I know this specific one is a hybrid - which is clever and cool)

I honestly wonder how something like this will work.
They say it goes in-sync with what's happening so it won't be a huge surprise, but does that mean there's a different one for each of the 28 (give or take) spots on the train? For those 4-across, it's a SLIGHTLY different experience on either side. For those 2-across, it's a HUGE difference between the front & back. So everybody's can't be 100% in sync.

@DawgByte2: There's probably specific headset for each seat. That way it can be synced to the Viewer. Just a guess.

Why do I picture VR headsets flying around the park getting smashed to peices? I hope they strap those things down good.

Never been at fan of simulated attractions. Until you can accurately replicate the feeling on wind in my hair as I look out over the horizon with the sun pouring down, it just won't be the same.

This will become one very messy ride if everyone starts puking.

I would like to try it but it needs to be better designed. With gravity jolting your body around and your head swaying in every direction with heavy head gear on it might be a painful experience.
