SkyDrive becomes OneDrive

Microsoft's online storage platform SkyDrive will henceforth be known as OneDrive, the company has announced. The branding change comes after Microsoft lost a product dispute this summer over the "Sky" name with British broadcasting company BSkyB and was forced to change the name.

"Why OneDrive? We know that increasingly you will have many devices in your life, but you really want only one place for your most important stuff. One place for all of your photos and videos. One place for all of your documents. One place that is seamlessly connected across all the devices you use. You want OneDrive for everything in your life," Microsoft said.

If that marketing message sounds familiar, it's because Microsoft is taking a similar line with the Xbox One, positioning the console as the one console you need in your living room.

For current SkyDrive and SkyDrive Pro users, you won't need to do anything as a result of this change. A landing page for the new OneDrive is available at OneDrive.com.

SkyDrive plays a major role on the Xbox One, as it is the mechanism through which users can share their recorded content, at least until direct-to-YouTube and Twitch streaming are added. The name change does not affect any Xbox One features.
