Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D Land post record Black Fridays

Nintendo's newest Legend of Zelda, Mario sell more than 500,000 units over retail holiday; 3DS sales jump 49 percent week-over-week.

The US retail sector received a much-needed boost over the Black Friday shopping weekend, with the National Retail Federation announcing record sales of $52.4 billion between November 24-27. Nintendo was among the companies that benefited, as both The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and Super Mario 3D Land posted record performances.

Link appears to only be improving with age.

Speaking to USA Today, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said that Skyward Sword has sold 535,000 units in the US following its November 20 launch on the Wii. Fils-Aime went on to say that Skyward Sword is now the company's fastest-selling installment in the Zelda franchise.

A similar claim can be made by Super Mario 3D Land, which launched for the 3DS on November 13. According to Fils-Aime, the game has sold more than 500,000 units to date, earning it the title of fastest-selling portable Mario game in company history.

3DS sales, while initially anemic, have rebounded since Nintendo enacted a 32 percent discount in August. Black Friday also proved to be a boon for the 3DS, as Fils-Aime said sales for the portable were up 49 percent compared to the week of November 13, when Super Mario 3D Land debuted. 3DS sales were up 325 percent compared to the week of November 6.

Fils-Aime expects the 3DS to continue its momentum through the holiday season, due in part to the upcoming release of Mario Kart 7 on December 4. The company will also launch a pink 3DS bundle that includes either Nintendogs + cats: French Bulldog and New Friends or Nintendogs + cats: Toy Poodle and New Friends.

The Nintendogs + cats bundles will carry a $170 price tag. They will go on sale December 4, joining the already-available black-and-gold Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3DS and flame-red Super Mario 3D Land bundles.

Nintendo also saw a strong performance from its five-year-old Wii, which sold more than 500,000 units on Thursday and Friday alone. That's a Black Friday best for the Wii, Fils-Aime said.

@moviequest14--yeah--it was a pretty big deal when people finally hit more home runs Roger Maris' home run record. Even though Roger hadn't played in decades. You seem to act like that just because the record was in the past and the person doesn't play anymore, that it doesn't matter. Heck--the LONGER it takes to beat it, the more impressive it is! You act like it is no big deal--but it is a big deal. PS3 won't sell as many as PS2. None of the 3 will sell as many as PS2 did world-wide. To even match it in one country is a pretty big accomplishment. Maybe you just don't realize how big the PS2 was. It doesn't matter that the PS2 hasn't sold well for 6 years. Say that is the one of the oddest comments I have ever read. I mean, you act like it would be no big deal for someone to break Wilt Chamberlains record or 100 points in a game, or kareem's lifetime points of over 38,000.

@Mr_Bodywave : It is an accomplishment but to beat the ps2 in modern days when it is not even sold in stores..that is like saying it is a fantastic accomplishment to beat a baseball star in home runs who hasn't even been at the base for over 10 years. It is basic knowledge that when a unit sells well and continues to sell that it will eventually pass another system that continues not to sell the entire 5-6 years the other system is selling.

@moviequest14. Clearly you are in major denial. If you think passing the PS2 in total sales is no big accomplishment. If you can't see that, then we will never see eye to eye on anything.

@Mr_Bodywave : As I said (though it appears to be white noise to you) on the very article that said it I said it was great that it did sell that many copies. I don't think it is a massive accomplishment for either wii or 360 to pass ps2 in 2011....it is a big accomplishment to pass a system that has been out of the limelight and store sales for years now? It would be one thing if 360/wii and ps2 were side-by-side with ps2 for all this time but the ps2 is a 10 year old system that isn't even sold in stores anymore while both 360 and wii are in stores and selling. Sure the 360 might be closer to wii in 2012/2013 but it will be a hollow victory and the exact same as ''passing'' ps2.Because Nintendo will have already moved onto the wii-u meaning if the 360 does pass at all it will be an after-the-fact victory of a last-generation system..Nintendo will be looking ahead and planning the success of the wii-u..not looking back to the past generation and saying ''Golly..it sure is a mighty sad thing that the wii was only in the lead 90% of its life!''...which is after all only an assumption and not a guarantee. But again comes the that even comparing the sales is unnecessary.I could make a list of 20 games that have sold more copies than Skyward Sword to ''warrant'' people thinking that it is a success for Nintendo but that is irrelevant to the discussion.

@moviequest14--it isn't gloating. That you see it as gloating says a lot more about you, than it does about the post. I like all the consoles and own 2 of them (360 and Wii). You see it as gloating because you are too tied to something. It patcher "gloating" when he says 360 outsold Wii by 400k in Nov? I don't think so. You are reading things that simply aren't there. You don't think it would be an accomplishment for either Wii or 360 to sell more than the PS2 did--the best selling home console in history? really? Why would you want to mimimize the 360's accomplishments or the wiis? Your dismissal is very odd. 360 has been outsellign Wii for quite some time now. And the gap will only get worse in 2012. You do realize that so far in 2011 that the 360 has outsold the Wii every single month, right? That it has outsold the Wii for every month except 1 for like the last 18 months, right? Why does the prospect of 360 outselling the wii longterm bother you so much? It is just a console. The PS3 won't likely sell more than the 360 in the US, but it likely will worldwide. So? PS3 is a great console too. None of that bothers me (who sells most)--but I find it interesting. Likewise I find the profits of the companies interesting. I don't care because I am not emotionally invested (like it seems you are). You do realize that people can be interested in gaming without being a "fanboy", right?

@Mr_Bodywave : But why? There is absolutely no reason to compare except for the purpose of gloating.Over-the top? I see people saying it is great and a big deal for Nintendo..both are true,I don't see much if any gloating on the side for Nintendo but even if there were it is entirely different to gloat about Nintendo sales on a Nintendo article, same for Ms on ms article or sony on sony article..but to go onto an article on another company to gloat about the sales of another company is completely different. Again not likely,it is in the realm of possibility but it isn't for sure or even likely that the 360 will even catch up to ps2..and if it does catch up/pass it that is no outstanding feat considering the ps2 hasn't even been in full market for quite a few years and was only en-mass store sales 6 years ago. It's funny how much of a specialty case you are setting up for the 360..~if ps2/wii sales significantly decrease and 360 continues to have a steady increase it will overtake~ ..yeah..that is basic knowledge, but that was Black Friday sales (units sell much more when discounted..who would've guessed?) not standard sales..yet you act like, because there was one spike on black friday, the 360 is now skyrocketing past all competition. So that does what..puts 360..400,000 units ahead of still being millions of units behind wii?

not to gloat--to compare, and also explain to some who had rather "over the top" reactions that their reaction might be more than warranted. Plus--didn't you read many of the posts in this thread as "gloating"? Of course you didn't have a problem with that. Right--by end of 2012, the 360 is likely to have outsold the PS2--just what I said. and depending on the Wii, it might take sometime into 2013, might not. Really depends on how much more their sales drop and how much 360's increases.

@Mr_Bodywave : You should also read more carefully...I have already said a while back that I congratulate MS on their unit-sales,if you check that article you will actually see me highly praising them for it.But the only reason I see for you to post those sales on a completely irrelevant topic is to gloat.I personally don't agree with the review but I'm not going to bash them for their opinion. If the game doesn't deserve a 10 in their opinion they shouldn't give it a 10.But I do think several of the things they called it out for weren't 100% legit..like the motion control (mainly) which he openly admitted to waggling when Nintendo has said many times that it won't work as well if at all when you waggle.10million isn't chump change..even if 360's sold like this once a month (which is incredibly unlikely) it would take 10 months to catch up to ps2 and more than a year to catch up with wii (assuming sales are at a stand-still waiting for 360 to catch up)..and even then it will be irrelevant because Nintendo will have already released wii-u and more than likely ps4 will be on the way.Even if the 360 gets close to catching up it won't even matter since there won't be a real competition any more because Nintendo will have already moved on to the next console, thus starting the next generation..which means unless 360's start selling like boats in a flood that the wii will close the generation with the most sales.

@moviequest14--please read more carefully--I said US. In US the Wii is less than 10mil ahead, and PS2 is about 10mil ahead. PS2 sold about40mil in US. 360 is about 30mil. Wii is around 37mil. (Ballpark here). Why in the world are you so upset by this? though--I have to say, I am not surprised. Nintendo fans are by far the most fanatic. I mean seriously--people actually got mad at gamespot for giving zelda a 7.5! posting videos and everything. Even in these comments I read a couple mentioning it. it is just a review score! I posted a simple post that put the Wii's sales in perspective and that seems to really upset you. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to. Of course, you could have ignored it--or just said "yep those are the numbers"--but it would seem that the very numbers themselves upsets you.

@Mr_Bodywave : Wow....just wow...you do know the wii is ahead by 31.76 million units in sales right? You do know that the ps2 has outsold the 360 by 92.4 million right? The 360 will have to sell like this practically once a month to get even close to competing with ps2 sales. So what? The 360 had best sales for the unit, not only is it not relevant to this article but it isn't proof that the 360 will become the highest selling console in the U.S.So not only do you come here in an attempt to praise the 360 (I'm not against the 360 I am against people who gloat it and rub it in people's faces just to make their sales feel better). But to try to make others feel bad about it? This isn't an article saying wii has the best sales on Black Friday for any console,it never even mentions 360,all it is talking about is that the wii had a successful Black Friday sale..so are you then so disturbed that the wii is getting any attention that you feel you need to belittle it? Nobody said that these sales outweighed 360 sales so you are rather obsessed with MS sales yourself if you feel you have to go onto any article saying the wii was successful to try to downplay it.

@moviequest14...."...but it is easier for 360 to sell more numbers because fewer people own 360's"--and yet when the Wii had 1/2 the installed base of the 360--it still didn't even sell 1/2 as many on Black Friday. This "there are less sold so easier to sell a lot" is BS. Both the Wii and 360 had their best black friday EVER this year. BOTH of them. and yes, the Wii has sold more, but it is highly probably that the 360 will pass the Wii in total US sales. Also--highly probably that the 360 will sell more total in US than the PS2. Why are you so upset that the 360 outperformed the Wii? Why does that upset you so much? It is about Black Friday sales. People were jubilent about the Wii's sales and acting like it was some super huge accomplishment. Seems they failed to realize that it just wasn't that great. It was certainly good. Better than expected even. But just more proof that the Wii is on the way out.

@Mr_Bodywave : Again spurt-sales don't mean overall sales. The gamecube had the fastest initial sales for any Nintendo system yet was the least successful...the psp was significantly more successful in units sold in opening week but ended up being beaten by the ds.And in a set amount of time the 360 sold more units but the wii still has more units sold over time.I am not talking about the wii sales, they can still increase because there are still people that don't own wiis...but it is easier for 360 to sell more numbers because fewer people own 360's..it also might be special circumstances like..the wii might sell more units on a regular basis than in spurts. I could bring up on any article saying 360's are selling well that the wii's have still outsold them..I could bring up on any article saying the xbox was successful that it was significantly outsold by the ps2 by a long shot..I could say on any article about microsoft being successful that neither of it's consoles have placed #1 in sales..but I don't because that is completely irrelevant. Why does it even matter that more 360's were sold in an exact weekend? This isn't an article comparing wii-to-360 sales. It is simply an article stating that wii and software sales are up..can you not even stand Nintendo being successful without trying to downplay it?

@moviequest14---ok--but the point I am making is that this is the best black Friday for the Wii also. Meaning back when it had much lower sales--like 3 years ago--it still sold less than 500k. That is the exact opposite of your theory. In fact--if you look at Black Friday 2008--the year that Wii sold the most in the US--it had 1/2 the installed base of the 360 at this point--and still the 360 outsold it--now with 2x the installed base. Your analogy is simply wrong. It has nothing to do with installed base. Heck--the WIi had its best black Friday ever--now with its largest installed base ever. Simply put--your wrong. Also--I don't thing pianos ever outsell TVs.

@Mr_Bodywave : First, you aren't getting the point I am trying to get across..let's say a company was selling tv's and pianos...practically every family above the poverty line has a tv already so piano's will naturally sell more than the tv's..does that make it some fantastic goal that pianos have sold more than a product that is already well over saturation point? More people have purchased wii's than 360's..so even at best sales wii's naturally won't sell as many units because so many people already have them. That is common business sense. Second,If you check the article in gamespot I actually highly praise that fact and say it is fantastic...but it isn't ''beating'' wii to have better weekend sales when it hasn't sold as many units...the psp had larger launch sales and which was the more successful? So what then does the 360 sales have to do with this? Or did you just decide to drag that in to belittle the wii sales?

@moviequest14 You are making no sense. The Wii had its best year with 500k. 360 sold 800k. Better than any thanksgiving of the Wii ever--by 60%. no way to spin that. it is incredible for 360.

@Mr_Bodywave : A lot more wii's were purchased..when more people purchase wii's fewer copies will be purchased copies, not nearly the same amount of 360's have been sold so it is much easier to sell more copies because fewer people have purchased them.

@moviequest14--then it should have been easier for Wii to sell that many 3 years ago when it had a lot fewer than it has now or the 360. And yet it is the Wii's best year, and even then the 360 sold 60% more.

@zequex I agree and no I haven't tired those 2 Mario games and all that I said is that Nintendo designs their systems mainly for kids and causal gamers but other people can like it and have fun on playing game on it has well just the games that I played on the Wii were boring and way too easy and I don't remember what games they were and I'm still considering in getting a Wii just to play NES games since my NES broke a while back but I just don't know what NES games are on the store and if it has any that I like edit: just found a list of NES games on the Wii while there are some that I want just not enough for me to buy a Wii

@shadowhunter0 No hard feelings, man. It was late and I was using your comment as an excuse to rant. I know you didn't mention "M" rated games. I was just poking a little fun. ;) I understand the desire for challenge but I find Nintendo games often bring some of the more genuinely challenging games to the table. Have you tried New Super Mario Bros Wii or Mario Galaxy? They can be freaking hard! As for the aesthetics, there is a distinct difference between "made for kids" and "made that kids can enjoy". It's the difference between Teletubbies and Pixar movies. Just because it's it's not "adult" doesn't mean adults can't enjoy them or that it makes them lesser quality productions. Also, I don't know about where you live, but around here I know tons of adults who enjoy Pokemon. And I don't know ANYONE who doesn't enjoy Mario. :)

Well--Nintendo had a good Thanksgiving with 500k for both Thursday and Friday. Of course compare that to 800k that the 360 did on Friday alone and it doesn't look so good. Throw in Thursday and 360 probably did twice the sales of the Wii.

@X_Colbert_X Actually Uncharted 3 is a first party title. What you are describing is the exception and not the rule. And actually--yes, months down the line, you will still find some of those titles in the top 10/20. I know this is a popular myth that 360/PS3 titles don't have "legs" and it simply isn't true.

if you look at what MS sold as UNITS and what Nintendo sold as UNITS, and read both post carefully nintendo and ms sold pretty close to the same amount of stuff on between Thursday and Friday. MS is just trying to make Nintendo look bad, but anyone who knows how to read with understanding knows what I am talking about.... P.S cant wait till mario kart 7 this sunday!!!

@zequex did I said that most M rated games are mature and I don't base my decision on the rating of the game and I never did I base my decision on the game it self that is is it fun to play if I don't like the game then I wont play it and everyone that knows me says I'm one of the most mature person that they have met and I don't like the new Mario game because they are boring and way to easy I still do like the ones on the NES though and if I wasn't bored right now I wouldn't have even bothered with you and just because I don't like the same games that you do doesn't make me immature calling me that because my opinion is different then yours and I like different games then you does make you one though and the only people that I know that likes a Pokemon game are kids and what I said is true that the wii was design for kids and casual gamers but that doesn't mean that other people wouldn't like it

@shadowhunter0 That's nice. :) When you grow up some day you will realize that most M rated games are actually the most immature games out there, and games like Mario are enjoyed thoroughly by everyone ages 5-105. Simply being in the "18-35" age group doesn't mean you are "mature". :)

@raahsnavj there are parental controls on the ps3 and you can have the main psn account and give your kids a sub account I'm not to sure how far you can control it though and you could always not connect the ps3 to the internet or disconnect when your aren't on to your kids can't go online there are ways to control what your kids do on it but yeah the wii is a better system for your kids since it was design for kids and the casual market

@iceblast21 : Wow,I can only hope you aren't taking yourself seriously.Want to check at some of the million-selling titles? Resident Evil,Call of Duty,Guitar Hero..all ''kiddie games'' yes...of course. You can try to cover up the truth with a poorly thought-out attempt at jabbing Nintendo but you can't change the fact that it is Zelda and Mario are selling like crazy, you can't change the fact that mainly adults are purchasing Zelda titles for themselves (as a matter of fact I can't remember the last time I've seen a kid or parent purchasing LoZ).(And you think the ''parents'' would buy $70 collector's editions for ''the kiddies''?) but no matter what you say that doesn't change the facts so to be quite blunt..deal with it,the only person you are succeeding in convincing is yourself.

Kids go through phases while growing up. First the start by loving Nintendo games when they are young and that gets them hooked on gaming. Then they get a little older and see the blood and violence of shooters and they think "these are the games grown-ups must play! Nintendo is for babies!" ....Then the ACTUALLY grow up and realize that the reason they loved Nintendo in the first place is because they make freaking amazing games.

To nintendo haters:Nintendo already annouced a Wii U to be released next year so a dying 5-year-old wii getting 500k units in just 2 days is seriously a big deal.

Thats a lot of Zelda sales for a game that GS gave 7.5 and everyone else gave near perfect scores.

Dropping the 3DS price before the holidays really was a smart move, especially considering how high it was originally.Once RE Revelations comes out, I'll really have no choice but to pick one up whether there's a new model by then or not. As for Skyward Sword, well those reviews claiming it to be the best Zelda game ever might not be that far off the mark. It's simply spectacular.Pick it up if you haven't already, and if you don't have a Wii, buy one and then pick it up.

3DS haters must remember that the DS had a really bad start as well. Infact, 3DS up to this point has been doing MUCH better then the DS did at start. Good job Nintendo!

It just proves that the 3DS needed some good games to sell, and with Mario 3D land and Mario Kart 7 timed well around Christmas, it's no wonder Reggie is predicting more sales.

im happy for nintendo but i think that when they saw these results, they are taking the advantage of this oppurtunity to get more money by selling nintendogs. 3Ds was all about core games, and third part support at launch, but now they start advertising nintendogs and cats ( as if there really is a difference)now that they see this boom in sales they are going to make the exact same mistake they made with the wii
