Sleeping Dogs Dev Reveals PC Open-World Action Game Triad Wars

Triad Wars is set in Hong Kong and launches for PC in early 2015; watch a trailer now.

Just as the studio said it would, Sleeping Dogs developer United Front Games has revealed its next game. Triad Wars is a online open-world action-adventure game for PC set in Hong Kong.

In the game, due out in 2015 (sign up for the beta here), your goal is to "rise to power as a criminal kingpin of the Triad underworld." To do this, you'll need money, and you'll get that by establishing your turf with "lucrative, albeit questionable operations" through which you'll gain stacks of (dirty) money you can use to arm yourself against rival gangs.

Money alone won't be your saving grace in Triad Wars, however, as players will also take on shooting, driving, and melee missions. "In Hong Kong, the action never stops and your rivals aren't going down until you put them there," Triad Wars community manager James Baldwin writes on the game's website.

Overall, United Front Games stresses that you'll be able to play Triad Wars the way you want to.

"Whether you choose to excel in extortion, hacking, money laundering, stolen cars, or even just good ol' fashioned violence is strictly situational and will be representational of your playstyle. It's your city to claim, and how you do it is entirely up to you," Baldwin says.

United Front Games also expects that Triad Wars will grow and evolve over time, based on player feedback. In the video above, a developer says, "This thing's a living, breathing thing. It's just going to keep evolving. I'm excited to figure out what it's going to be in two years. It could be a completely different game, and that's really exciting."

APB 2.0 anyone?

It will be another stillborn MMO cash-in that developers and publishers will point out when they complain that you can't make a good game for PC.

Sleeping dogs was a good game, not gonna say great, clearly it had ways to go before being an actual sandbox crime simulator. Stuck between a mix of Yakuza and GTA, but now it won't be anything else. It will survive for a few months unti it peters out and forgotten for another 10 years, like several other promising new IPs

Wanted to play Sleeping Dogs, but unfortunately after purchasing it I could never get passed the intro. Once I ran through the door and got caught by the cops in the into sequence the game crashed. Could never find a solution for it.

Too bad this is going to be another poor online only game. I would have loved to see something like Sleeping Dogs 2 or its spiritual successor to be PC exclusive and see the reactions of console only boys.

This series and it's history is fucked. It has always been a sweet idea to kickass as a kungfu master cop in Hong fucking Kong. This is fact. Why was it so hard to fund when it was a True Crime game? Why did they not see how sweet sleeping dogs was and think about where to go next, instead of locking us in the same city with a bunch of mp players who are just as flabbergasted at this shit as you are. Madness, sheer madness.

If its fun i will check it out, but this only delays the superior SD 2 that NEEDS to happen.

The "online only" part is what bothers me the most, so no money from me for this one.

Try harder next time to understand what players wanted to see in a sequel, devs. (hint: it's not a online only game)

I loved Sleeping Dogs and believe it to be one of the best games of 2012. But what I loved about Sleeping Dogs wasn`t the shooting, wasn`t the fighting (it was pretty good, though), but the story. The experience of following Wei Shen and his quest. Sure, I loved the Hong Kong setting, but not only because it was very well made and unique, but because it was the background of a great story.

Now, this? Yeah, shooting, yeah fighting, yeah "open world" but that wasn`t what made Sleeping Dogs great. It`s amazing how they got an awesome game and concept and decided to follow up with yet another generic, bland, shallow, open sandbox game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> ya man sleeping dogs was actually fucking amazing, totally better then watchdogs and it is a year and a generation older. A sequel must be on it's way, like besthesda i hope its just an online gimmicky shtick until they release the next big game, SD 2 set in like Seoul Korea, or Singapore, that would be badass

So, I know i'm mad but does anybody seriously give a shit about this? Like are any of you like "Sweet can't wait to pick this up".

I really wanted a full-fledged sequel to sleeping dogs, on multiple consoles, featuring pt. 2 in Wei Shen's story. This is just dumb.

Looks too similar to Sleeping Dogs, also weak graphics for a PC exclusive.

I wonder how much of the budget they wasted on pointless multiple camera switches for what is, someone in a room talking.

So edgy.

While I'll give this game the benefit of the doubt I really don't like this new trend of developers telling us we can play the way we want, when it usually just means "you have to make up your own fun". I guess that's a large part of the appeal for games like Skyrim and Minecraft... both of which are huge successes, so I guess I should just take the hint and know this wont be for me (not a fan of those games I mentioned)!

I also don't like the "it'll be a whole new game in a few months/years" line either, because it just ends up being an excuse for a lacklustre launch in most cases.

Ah well, this game doesn't sound like my cup of tea, definitely would have welcomed something more similar to Sleeping Dogs, expanded and improved of course, but still story driven. I do hope this delivers for the people who like this kind of open sandbox game though.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I like when you can decide how you wanna play, what I don't like is the reality of how that usually turns out. You choose the type of crime you wanna commit, you can extort money from people, or choose to launder money:

Extortion: Start mission, drive a car to a certain spot, find person to extort and complete mini-game or QTE.

Laundering: Start mission, drive a car to a certain spot, launder money through legit business by completing mini-game or QTE.

Ok kinda stupid examples, but you get the idea :). This is an issue with most open world games, like GTA.

Specifically for a crime game, although it did have the same repetitive issues as others, the best example for making me feel like I was actually climbing the criminal ranks was Scarface. That game really gave me a sense of going from a street corner type dealer to a drug empire boss. That's something I didn't feel in GTA Online, and I doubt Triad Wars will deliver, but we'll see.

Maybe this could be surprisingly good, but I fear repetitive gameplay and a "pay to play" business model. Stop trying to turn good games into MMOs u saw what happened to the elder scrolls.

I'll take what I can get. I cant afford to miss out on such a great game just cause its marketed as an "online game". Sleeping Dogs remains one of the best games I've played in the last five years. Eagerly anticipating this one...

Boo! Boooooooo!!

This series started as True Crime (which was o.k.), then changed to Sleeping Dogs (which was good), and now has turned into some online F2P Triad Wars thing (which is bad)... how many times can you change this IP and still hope to find gold?

Do Sleeping Dogs 2 instead, and include some open-world cop stuff in it, like arresting people for random street crimes, or just for the heck of it (like in True Crime). That game would be hot.

<< LINK REMOVED >> And some more stuff to do in the world. I thought the core and the story were great but the lack of fights on the streets and the cops being trigger happy killed the replayability a bit. With such fun combat I'd like to fight gangs every 10 steps around the streets

It's really weird how many people wanted a Watch Dogs sequel announcement instead. Haven't you guys spent MONTHS whining nonstop about the game, now you want a sequel?

Don't worry about it, it was an easy mistake to make. If you want to delete it, then feel free. I will remove my response to you as well.

I would leave it up also though, shows you are only human. I've made far worse comments over the years. :)

It's nice to be nice sometimes.

It was a simple mistake to make and was quick enough to acknowledge the mistake but if somebody is being a complete w****r for no good reason then I won't be so kind. (see evidence below. lol)

Published by Nexon...

I am not sure if I have hope for this game, it looks very arcadey/mmo'y, and that is nothing about what I enjoyed in Sleeping dogs.

I don't get why they couldn't make a full fledged single player sequel and also have this as the mp side of the game.

It all comes down to money... sadly.

The first game was well liked by many but it didn't sell very well. In fact I remember when it was cancelled back when it was called True Crime: Hong Kong, no publisher wanted to touch it until Square Enix took it on, then it was renamed to Sleeping Dogs.

The chance of a second, would depend on the success of the first but again the first wasn't that successful initially, as I said it was well liked and a larger fan base grew as the price tumbled down and eventually given away for free on both consoles.

Now it would seem they are betting on the PS4/XOne remastered versions to sell well and then maybe get the sequel into gear. (I do not know these as facts btw).

I would welcome a second game from these guys, I really enjoyed the first too. You never know if this is successful, then they may add something like it to a potential Sleeping Dogs II.
