Development on Project M, a popular modding project for 2008's Super Smash Bros. Brawl, has ended. The team behind the initiative announced the news in a post on its website. They had been working on Project M for more than six years but have decided to bring things to a close rather than "let it drag on."

"We realize that this will come as a shock to many of our fans. Please, forgive us," it said. "Again, it's been an excruciating call to make, but it's been made a bit easier by our satisfaction with the previous and final release, v3.6. We've spent six years polishing Project M, and rather than let it drag on through another several years of dwindling development and change-fatigue in the competitive circle, we're going to consider our work complete.

"We've learned so much in the process of making Project M--accumulating life-changing lessons in communication, team work, professionalism, work ethic, and more--but there's only so far we can take those skills in a volunteer project," the team added. "With this in mind, we've made a difficult business decision: We're ready to finish development here and move on to bigger and better ventures."

The team behind Project M is "hard at work" on unspecified new projects, which are being "built from the ground up."

"We can't spill the beans just yet, but know that we're looking towards a fresh start with brand new designs," they said. "Rather than splitting our focus, many of us want to dedicate ourselves to this new venture fully. In this way, we hope to maintain the level of quality and professionalism you've come to expect from us."

Files for Project M, which had been available for free, are no longer featured on the team's website. In fact, the entire website has been scrubbed clean except for the shutdown announcement.

For more on Project M, check out the GameSpot Now Playing video above, in which we check out the 3.0 version.

finally, if you want melee than fking play melee. people need to learn to quit whining about a game that is exactly like an older game. if you want that then go play CoD. the mod was stupid anyways :/

That's a damn shame. Project M was beyond wonderful, and it sucks that it's all gone. I'm less than satisfied with smash 4 (better than brawl, but thats not saying much). Just hope these guys amount to something great. They certainly deserve it.

@Ruthlessrabbid: why do they deserve anything? if anything they would fit in with M$ as all M$ does is take other peoples ideas and sell it with next to no changes. they pretty much wasted six years of their life on a game and gained nothing that can be used on a resume.

To GHO5T-666 (sorry I can't answer to posts or else "an error occurred"...)

@GH05T-666:It works with PAL consoles (WII or WII U), you only need one extra manipulation, and you need to own an American copy of Smash Bros as well as a PAL one.

Basically, you'll have to use your PAL game and activate an exploit involving "Smashstack PAL" (which you'll have previously downloaded to a SD card) so that the console is "region freed" and you can switch to the US game.

In other words : yes the mod only works with US Smash Bros, BUT there are ways to read American games on a PAL console and make Project M works :)

Hope this helps. I wrote a whole tutorial in French if someone needs it.

Never even heard of this, but it makes me wish as a star trek fan the fan project under star trek excalibure would do what these guys did and just disband. They have been so called development for 12 years only to scrap old engine for a new one. Just kill it already instead of dashing our hopes more and more every year!

I swear the nintendo fanbase is the only gaming fanbase in the world that actually celebrates when fanmade projects get shut down...

I never understood the point of this mod...it was basically Brawl for those who didn't liked it when it came out and still wanted to play Melee...if you want to play Melee, just play Melee...thankfully Smash 4 is finally taking over this mod.

Good! It was unnecessary. All these entitled, whiny little Smash players need to stop living in the past.

Melee is still the best, though Project M is great as well. Both are much better than Brawl IMO. The Wii U version is better as well but I don't like the changes they made with the edge mechanic and it stills feels slow and floaty at times.

That sucks, but I understand. I really enjoyed Project M. It had way more balance in that Metaknight wasn't god tier like he was in Brawl, slow characters had a fighting chance, cool costumes and skins, custom music, ability to customize your Character Select screen, a lot of great things.

But with Smash 4, player base shrank. Especially since Smash 4 is a lot more competitively viable than Brawl.

Brawl, and your STUPID random tripping. Ugh... Thank you again, Project M. You where awesome.

Project M is what Brawl should've been. All the little tweaks and improvements they did to so many characters that felt bland otherwise (3 full-fledged pokemons instead of Poke trainer was just awesome,or the way you could change Samus's cannon between Ice and pulse with the D-pad taunt) anyway, that and the added levels all for free was simply just awesome. Ive had great time playing their mod with friends before moving on to Smash 4 and I want to congrats these guys for their work.

The concept behind Project M was cool... but they screwed with all the levels... and that was NOT cool.

Good Riddance.

Good. Jesus Christ. Brawl was actually quite nice, but having a mod to give it a hint of Melee was stupid. Sucks to hear that there are still people who live in the past--i thought only housewives were allowed to do that.

@dyshonest: Um any CoD game was worse than Brawl. So you are also stating that any of the shovel ware games on Wii are BETTER than Brawl? I think someone just needs to grow up. If you don't like fine but LOTS of other people do like it. People grow and so do games and game franchises. What you want Smash be like CoD and just recycle the same gameplay mechanics every game and just add one fighter and one stage per installment? Cause that what it sounds like you would want. I suggest you pick up the latest CoD and hop on that band wagon as that still plays like MW2 even today.

@Someguy1212: ITT: Someone complains that someone dislikes a game and claims many people do like it while ignoring the fact that his argument can be turned against him with "many people dislike it too, I think fanboys just need to grow up!".

Also, Smash 4 was good and it was a complete overhaul of the gameplay engine, implying that, hey, Smash CAN be good while using a different gameplay engine. Brawl just wasn't it.

@Person4: I think it's funny how people seem to think their opinion is the law. I, for one, also really enjoyed Brawl. Excluding the tripping mechanic, it was a very smooth game with a ton of features. I tried playing the new one multiple times and I just can't get into it. I don't enjoy it not because it's not polished, but because it lacks a lot of content. Compared to Brawl, I feel like they took out a lot of fun features...things I really enjoyed as a single-player (since all my friends live far away and the online is still atrocious). It's like they took one step forward then two steps back. Heck even Melee felt like a more enjoyable single-player experience than the new one.

My ultimate point is that Brawl was hardly one of the 'worst'. In fact, it was one of the BEST, as can be seen by player AND critic reviews. But of course you'll assume your opinion is the only opinion that matters and that your opinion is the guidance for the law of the land, @dyshonest.

It's a real shame, because Project M was a fantastic mod that took the best of both Melee and Brawl and brought them together in one truly great package. It's sad to see it come to such a sudden end.

Still, I wish the best of luck to the Project M team. They're all really talented and dedicated, and I'm sure that anything they have in store for the future is going to be great.

It's not too bad if indeed they are "satisfied" with the latest 3.6 version. However, it's problematic if we cannot download it anymore... I only have an old version. I hope 3.6 can still be found somewhere.

Project M was a beautiful project, my only regret is that I couldn't find anybody to play it with x|

I'll keep an eye on that Wavedash project.

Great reporting. Completely forgets to list the real reason they're removing Project M.

Here GameSpot. I'll do your job for you: http://prntscr.com/99d3xi

PSA: Unless profusely butthurt about something, when you stop development on your project you don't typically remove the project from being downloadable unless there's a legal reason.

@dyshonest: or they have matured to the point that they now acknowledge that what they did was immature and stupid. Project M is the like the people who complained about why the DSi didn't have a GBA slot because they wanted new gadgets to play games from over 10 years ago even though they still had a DS. :|

@dyshonest: I don't see why the mod has to be available online for Nintendo to claim they copied code from Smash Brothers. All Nintendo would need to do is get the source code as part of discovery for any legal action and compare it.

@ggregd: How do you propose Nintendo successfully completes a C&D for a project that isn't actively worked on, isn't supported by the creator and not available from the creator anymore? Sending the C&D letter to a ghost and suing it?

@dyshonest: This is the Internet. Once you upload something, it's there forever.

And the issue according to that post is whether Nintendo can claim they stole code for the new project they're currently working on. Nintendo can initiate court proceedings, of which a cease and desist might be a part, and demand to see the code to determine whether their Smash Brothers code is in there. It's irrelevant whether the mod officially exists or not.
