Snoop sparks up season two of HHGL

Rapper/actor announces kickoff of new season of Hip-Hop Gaming League; Lupe Fiasco, Warren G, Jalen Rose among those on board.

Snoop Dogg has come a long way since his days as a cocaine-dealing Crip in Long Beach, California. The Grammy-nominated artist may have platinum records, an acting career, and a successful Pee-Wee football team, but last year he broke into new territory--he got gamer cred with the launch of the Hip-Hop Gaming League, of which he is commissioner.

Seriously, it's for his arthritis.
Seriously, it's for his arthritis.

Now the HHGL is getting passed around for a second time. Yesterday, Snoop and media company GGL announced that round two of the league is underway. Like last season, this year's crop of participants includes a mix of rappers, athletes, and other celebrities, all organized in a tournament that culminates in Las Vegas on February 16.

This year, the following will be trying to smoke each other for the title: Krazie Bone, Fredwreck, Just Blaze, Jalen Rose of the Phoenix Suns, Eric V (last year's winner), B-Real, Paul Wall, David Banner, Murs, Cobi Jones of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Lil' Wayne, Birdman, DJ Maseo, Rick Ross, Yung Joc, Lupe Fiasco, Malice, Pusha T, DJ Revolution, Darnell Bing of the Oakland Raiders, Brandon Marshall of the Denver Broncos, Wish Bone Warren G, Big Pooh, Hi-Tek, Lil Keke, Xololanxinxo, Layzie Bone, Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder, Trevor Ariza of the Orlando Magic, and Michael Robinson of the San Francisco 49ers.

"Yo, the HHGL is slammin' this season, with some of the baddest gamers in hip-hop and pro sports," said Snoop Dogg, in a statement. "This time around, the fans are gonna get into the game, going up against superstars like my main man Eric V, B-Real, David Banner, Lupe Fiasco, Lil Wayne, Warren G, Cobi Jones, and so many other brothas I can't even give 'em all shout-outs. Just play the game, ya dig?"

Those registered with GGL will have the chance to play in a parallel fans-only league and will have to weed their way through the competition to get to the Las Vegas finals.

NCAA 07 Football for the Xbox 360 will be the main game used in competition, but Snoop has the say to add Saints Row, Madden NFL 07, and NBA 2K7 to matchups "to spice up the league."

For more information, head over to the HHGL Web site.

Maybe if Snoop stops making albums, he'll have more time to play more games. Perhaps, he might even get better games... But, yeah, this is (almost) insulting to real gamers.

I hardly think that one should read a video gaming website for insightful opinions on the state of hip-hop.

I used to be huge into rap and such, but really it has changed so much lately and even big guys like Busta Rhymes or Dre are no longer pumping out the hits like they used to. Lately, u nless you have a story to tell like eminem or 50 cent, you get bypassed by the mainstream as being the same as every other rapper out there, and this goes to show its getting stale.

Lets be honest, Hip Hop was once a great art form and had many fantastic artists. Nowadays aside from cool under-grounders such as MF Doom its all uncreative, bragging rubbish. I listen to my old school collection and it still sounds good, I see these lot nowadays, all the videos are the same, the beats are boring and they talk rubbish ! I miss real Hip Hop !

WOW...all these Rap haters. Why? Is it because the Hip-Hop culture has ousted almost everything "Rock" in popular mass culture? I mean...besides My Chemical Romance, Panic At The Disco, Coldplay or whatever other EMO Rock clone is out nowadays...what does Good Ole Rock and Roll have left?? Even True Rock bands like G&R, Korn, RATM and Linkin Park gave props to Hip Hop and understood it's importance in music. "I hate rap talk sooo much...It`s like trying to prove your 2-word vocabulary, bad english and 0 culture when you`re speaking like that."

Why does hip-hop and video games have to suffer these kind of media ploys that does no justice to either's image in the face of mainstream america. Although, DJ Hi-Tek, Aaron McGruder, and Lupe Fiasco is a postive note.

The line-up is INSANE! I'm betting Paul Wall will get far, but that's just because he's a fat, white guy  I'm not trying to be racist here, mind you... I think it's a shame so many people can't embrace rap as just a different music genre. I think it's great to see a former drug-dealer make his life so successful! And it's great that I, a 15 year-old Norwegian guy, have EVERY single album he has released on my MP3 player

BILLNYE6983 Wow you saved me time arguing with ppl and i agree with u on almost everything, except for the race point in the beginning, but maybe thats becuz im naive. As a hip hop lover i always find myself defending it but i never find myself attacking other genre's of music why is that? why cant people just respect other ppl music. Rap isnt the only thing that may have negative influences....try movie, tv, and oh yes VIDEO GAMES. People dont you hate it when someone that knows nothing about video games comes up and says how bad n evil it is. It turns kids into killers and crap like that. Its the same feeling hip hop lovers face on this site n everywhere else. A topic or game might come up( like def jam vendetta) and someone down the line says "RAP SUCKS" and "its all about killing and drugs". WTF look at the type of games we play....gears of war dropped 3 million and that has killing in there if i can remember correctly. GTA has violence, sex and drugs. So my question is whats the difference between a politician who attacks video games (which they know nothing about) and a people on this site attacking rap (which they know nothing about)?

Is it just me, or did anyone else notice the only games (with one exception) they're playing are sports games? The one exception is Saint's Row... I guess to fit in with that hip hop gangsta thug image they're trying to portray of themselves. What real gamer plays sports games anyway?

Does that mean that rappers are casuals? According to their 'setlist', the games are pretty boring. It would be awesome if they'd play 50 cent's game and that ridiculous urban full auto clone....that would make them look even more idiotic. gangsta rappers who take themselves serious are laughable.

Psh. Gamer cred? You must be kidding, right? He has no credibility. He only plays sports games, and last I heard, the rules of football are still the same as they were back in '91, when I first got ahold of a Madden game. Anyone can play football and basketball. The inclusion of Saints Row shines at least a ray of hope. Now, if they were playing Blitz: The League, then maybe we'll talk, but until then, he and his group are just a load of wannabe gaming posers.

maaannnnn... not only does the competitive edge seem very appealing, but those are all games I can see myself smashing peeps in and feeling no remorse. Half these mofo's are already rich and living large, and sometimes the best they face are usually thier cronnies tagging along... so if I can get thru the public part and actually face a paid pro... the golden oppertunity to trash talk will be THAT CLOSE!! Viva Las Vegas!!

Of all the crazy ideas I buy into, professionally play video games is not one. Watching people play games or being paid to play games doesn't peak my interest. The only reasons people like this are 1. It has Snoop Dogg 2. It has various celebrities and 3. It has sponsors To emphasize those reasons; would you watch it if it had 1. Jason Alexander (not the one from Seinfeld) 2. Random people from the Midwest 3. Was on public television (not PBS think more basic than basic cable)
