Some games pay to appear on Conan's Clueless Gamer segments

Horror game Outlast paid $35,000 to be featured on Conan's Clueless Gamer segment.

A source familiar with the late-night talk show's practices said that about a quarter of the games featured on Conan's Clueless Gamer segment were paid endorsement deals.

Speaking with Re/code, a spokeswoman for Red Barrels, the studio behind the horror game Outlast, said that the developer paid $35,000 to be featured on the show.

Conan O'Brien spoke favorably about Outlast, but less so of two other horror games that were featured in the same episode: Parsec Production's Slender: The Eight Pages and Frictional Games' Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Both Parsec and Frictional said that they did not pay to appear on the show.

Recommending it to "young people who can't see well," O'Brien also made fun of Minecraft when reviewing it on Clueless Gamer. Mojang's Daniel Kaplan said that the company did not pay to be featured on the show either.

“These Clueless Gamer segments are not serious reviews nor endorsements—they are strictly comedic sketches,” a show spokesman told Re/code. “We do not believe sponsorship identification is needed. . .Insofar as information regarding ad sales and product integration rates, that is privileged network information to which we are not privy.”

"We did one or two of them [Clueless Gamer reviews], video game companies loved it, they came to us and said, review our game please," O'Brien said in an interview with Anderson Cooper at the Cannes Lions International Festival for Creativity. "I said I'll do it, but I don't want to be held back in any way. They said 'we don't care, as a reviewer you have no credibility,'" he joked. He also admitted that the show had an "integration" with publishers like Square Enix, meaning it paid to feature Tomb Raider on the show.

"I think this whole segment could be renamed 'have your cake and eat it too,' I think that's the name of the game now," O'Brien said, explaining that he believed he got to be funny while making the show money through these integration deals.

A little late, but this is really just creative marketing. I like Conan. He's a comedian first and foremost. So naturally having him partake in something he doesn't usually know much about is not a bad idea. And it raises awareness, which is the intent.

I already assumed they paid to be on there. But I thought they all did. And $35,000 seems a bit steep. O.K. not a bit but a lot. So uh, why do some pay and some not? I can think of much better ways to spend that much on marketing my product especially if it's not a serious segment.

Oh sure, there's a difference between paying to have a game featured in a comedy sketch, and paying to have a game shilled.

But here's the question that you probably did not ask: did Conan O'Brien disclose that he had been paid to feature some titles?

Now, I have to say here that I don't watch his shows, but if you had, can you answer that?

Perhaps you think that it's alright for Conan O'Brien because he is a hilarious person that pokes fun at any game that is featured, paid or otherwise?

If you only read the headline: "Some games pay to appear on Conan's Clueless Gamer segments." Do the publishers know that these games are spending their money? :P

Sometimes I feel like the movie Idiocracy is reality. If we lived in a world that wasn't full of morons, things like this wouldn't even be an issue.I for example am not so impressionable as to go out and buy something just because it was on some show and it looked like they were having fun or they talked positively about it.

I DO MY DAMN RESEARCH FIRST !

In fact I'm not fooled even by reviews. For example I know not to trust IGN.Not necessarily because they get paid or anything like that but their reviews are always fucked up for whatever reason.Either they give a shitty game a positive review or they give and incredible game an average review.

Look at the Beyond:Two souls review from IGN.Regardless if that's just the reviewer's opinion, you shouldn't assign a certain game to be reviewed by a moron who doesn't understand the genre.I for example hate sports games and in my view they all should get a 5/10 but I would never review a sports game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's not just because it was on the show, I think. I think that a person who thinks the gameplay that's seen on the show looks good would look up some more on the game itself.

So people who "don't understand the genre" - at least not in the way that you do - don't have their say on something then?

While this is probably true on some level, quoting 'a source' is at the National Enquirer level of journalistic merit.

I doubt that you would make the statement that you made if some other "source" 'exposes' something about people or organizations that you happen to dislike.

False. A 'source' is the author's way of either protecting that individual's privacy (as per the Freedon of Information act) or fabricating the entire story. This is how tabloids get away from being sued for the majority of their stories.

Of course he gets paid! He clearly states everytime that he doesn't like games and that games are for nerds, why would he do it otherwise? I'm more surprised that he played games he wasn't payed to review.

Maybe you want to realize the issue here is that whether Conan O'Brien has disclosed, during each episode, whether he had been paid to feature a game or not.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Oh, I meant when you post a comment at say @ such and such and they aren't even in the conversation. I was just curious how you do that. And a for Conan, I don't really like or dislike him. Don't really pay enough attention to him to know a whole lot about him other than the fact that a lot of people think he's funny. Plus I'm not too big on all those late night talk shows.

Conan isn't doing real reviews, he's just comedy skits about them. He doesn't he give scores or real impressions, just makes jokes. Big difference between that and paying for respected reviews which many people depend on to make purchases.

Once again, some people just don't get it.

Yeah, I'm totally cool with this too. Conan never claimed the reviews were serious. And they never denied the arrangement either, like it was a big secret or something. And honestly, many of us, especially me, kinda already knew anyway. Besides, if I was in comedy and some folks wanted to pay me to make fun of their products, which I was probably gonna do for free anyway, I'd be pretty stupid to turn them down.
