Some Lord Of The Rings Games Have Been Delisted On Xbox, PlayStation, And PC

Goodbye, Lego: Lord of the Rings and Lego: The Hobbit.

Lego: The Lord of the Rings and Lego: The Hobbit have been removed from a number of digital storefronts on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. You can no longer buy the games digitally, and their removal could be tied to the expiration of a licensing deal.

Lego: The Lord of the Rings (2012) and Lego: The Hobbit (2014) seemingly require numerous licenses, from the films, Lego toys, and other rights-holders, so it's not a total surprise to see them leave digital stores. Other Lord of the Rings games, like Middle-earth: Shadow of War, remain available to buy, however.

Now Playing: LEGO The Lord of the Rings - Humor Trailer

Reddit user SuperMoonky, who first reported the removal of the games, reckons the Lego games might have been removed because they feature dialogue and music that came straight from the movies, while Shadow of War does not do this.

In other Lord of the Rings news, a new, online-focused Lord of the Rings game is in the works, but basically nothing is known about it at this stage.

Outside of games, Amazon is producing a very expensive Lord of the Rings TV show that is set long before the events of the movies. Additionally, a movie about author J.R.R. Tolkien and his wife Edith Bratt is in the works with Nicholas Hoult and Lily Collins.

It's stuff like this that makes physical still valid and streaming services less appealing.

I have been a physical consumer, until the last year and started to buy more digital, but stuff like this makes me think twice.

Might buy the spiderman game on physical now

@barcaazul:

No reason to be put off of digital.. If you bought the game you still have it... You just can't purchase the game if you haven't yet. Nothing you bought disappears.

@barcaazul: Pricing alone is enough to put me off digital... why buy a game online day one when the online stores are charging £54.99 when I can buy the game physical for £38.99 day one, and be able to sell it on when I'm done with it?

Didn't expect that as WB was the publisher of those games.

This explains the recent giveaways of both games.

This is the same reason why you still can't buy The Drew Carey Show on home video. Really sucks.

Also, games like Shadow of Mordor stayed listed because Warner Bros owns both the IP and the game studio. Where as LEGO games are licensed to Traveler's Tales.

Note to everyone who buys digital (like me): If you're even slightly, passively, interested in any licensed property video game, buy the damn thing now!

This is what I did with the TMNT, Deadpool, Spider-man, etc, games.

This is what I hate about licensing agreements. Over time, you won't be able to buy games digitally any more. Another example is Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends. The licensing agreement expired on New Years Day, so it's no longer available digitally. Another would be Doctor Who: the Eternity Clock. I suspect this will also happen to games with licensed music like Grand Theft Auto, Saints Row, etc.

@Jinzo_111887: it’s already happened, GTA IV got a patch that changed (removed) some of the music.

@SonictheHeg: Meanwhile physical games stop getting printed. And if a licensing deal like this runs out then it means either they no longer print the game or remove the licensed material for future printings.

Physical isn't exempt from these kind of issues.

If anything it's less of a matter of online vs physical and more a matter that developers/publishers need to rework how they handle licensing deals or just stick to using their own stuff.

@phoenix1289: The difference is you can still find physical copies via eBay or other auction sites, mom and pop stores, friends, etc. When a digital only game is pulled... That's it. People can't resell digital copies.

@SonictheHeg: It will be even worse if Microsoft's idea of a streaming-only console ever exists.

@Elranzer: I believe SONY is ahead in that regard and would likely be the first to market with that - see PS Now.

@SonictheHeg: This is why I buy the majority of my games as physical discs when I can.

Man Warner Bros has some really epic ip's under their belt they've barely exploited in video games.
