The Game Awards will host the debut trailer for Sonic 2, the upcoming sequel to the 2020 action-comedy. The official movie account teased the trailer with a first look at the movie poster, which visually references the 1992 game.

We knew from the first movie that Tails would be appearing in this sequel, and sure enough, he's there with his propeller plane, the Tornado, with Sonic perched on top. We can also see Jim Carrey's Dr. Eggman in the background, looking much more like his video game counterpart this time--including being at the control of a chrome hovercraft.

The Game Awards account followed up with an announcement that the trailer will be presented by Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz, and will include a "first look at the next Sonic game." The Game Awards starts Thursday, December 9 at 8 PM ET. Sonic 2 is slated for release on April 8, 2022. The event will also include a first look at the Halo TV series.

"As video game adaptations go, Sonic the Hedgehog is among the stronger ones," Phil Hornshaw wrote in GameSpot's Sonic movie review. "It's smart enough to stand on its own, making use of longstanding aspects of Sega's supersonic mascot and his franchise, while making sure that what really shines through are its characters. That restraint goes a long way to making Sonic the Hedgehog a light, funny movie, and while it definitely skews young, longtime Sonic fans should have just as much fun finally seeing the Blue Blur on the big screen."

The new Sonic game being teased is probably the new game from Sonic Team that debuted at Sega's anniversary event, currently slated for 2022. Details are scant on that project, as so far we've only seen a very brief teaser-trailer, but that appears primed to change soon.
