Sonic Movie's Redesigned Hedgehog Revealed In New Trailer

New trailer, new Sonic the Hedgehog.

The new trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog move is here. This isn't technically the first trailer--that appeared back in April--but it does give us the first look at the redesigned Sonic. That initial promo was met with much criticism for the way Sonic looked, so the filmmakers took the unusual step of delaying the film to give its Hedgehog star a complete makeover. You can check it out in both the trailer and new poster below.

It's quite clear from the very start that the redesign has essentially made Sonic look way more like the familiar video game character, and less "realistic." While the initial design made Sonic seem more human, presumably to fit in better with the movie's real actors, this one has a pure comic book look, with much bigger eyes and mouth, and cartoonish limbs. As for the movie itself, it still looks like huge fun, and there's lots of footage that wasn't in the first trailer. Watch it here and then check out our side-by-side Sonic redesign comparison.

Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog - Official New Trailer

Sonic the Hedgehog hits theaters on February 14, 2020, having been pushed back from this November. Sonic is voiced by Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), with Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (who's prominently featured in the poster below alongside Sonic). Westworld's James Marsden will feature as a state trooper who catches onto Sonic's super speed.

Director Jeff Fowler was very quick to address the criticism of Sonic's appearance after the first trailer. Within a day, he had tweeted that the character would be redesigned, with the date change announced soon after to allow for the extensive extra VFX work. Ahead of the reveal of the redesign, he tweeted in excitement about being able to show the world the hedgehog's new look.

As someone who loves Jim Carrey, I was in it from day one just for him. Now that Sonic looks right, it will make the movie that much more palpable.

Definitely looks much better than the previous incarnation. This version of Sonic instantly reminds me of how classic Sonic should look.

I saw someone post recently a theory about the redesign being there all along and they released the clearly crappy first design as a publicity stunt.....unlikely but.....maybe....

Now it looks even more lame and Sonic’s voice is different and more lame...

Before it was bad but in a funny way now the film is going to be seriously bad.

It still is going to be a poor movie, regardless of the redesign.

This is a moment of great joy, not just for Sonic but for every IP we hold dear to our hearts that has been ruined by idiots who don't understand what beloved characters mean to their fans.

This is better than that original design they showed us, don't know how they approved that design to begin with.

He look like Sonic supposed to look. Didn't even know that was Jim Carrey. Also surprise they going with Dr Robotnik and not that stupid Dr Egg man crap.

Sonic looks alot better and alot more expressive.

but Jim Carrey is still screaming and jumping around after all these years which is supposed to be funny??? , the humor is early 00's fart joke humor (literally in that baseball scene)
and the plot seems dumb even for SOnic standards.
I would've even took the cookie cutter "You must help me find the 7 chaos emeralds before Eggman"

but this is just SOnic on the run and road trippign where he is a "fish out of water" which will lead to whacky humor for the kiddies a movie you will even want to take grandpa too.

Have fun, ill pass.

Who in the world actually signed off on the first design? Even though Paramount took the reigns from Sony in this movie, both studios should have known better.

These movie studios need to realize that the original fans will slander the heck out of things when they don't seem "right". And that will always lead to low box office performance.

I don't see any scenario where this is considered a good movie but I don't think it will be considered garbage. Make no mistake I will probably still see it on account of I grew up with Sonic and I like the redesign it is a lot better than the first. Most likely this will be cut from the same cloth as detective pikachu.

Good job to the team for getting this done, but I have to add, I think this model was probably already in back up design. I believe the director said in the IGN interview that they were releasing the trailer early so in case fans weren't receptive of it, they could modify the model.

Still, Sonic looks more fun to watch and the movie itself I think will be good entertainment. I do hope it finds even a moderate success.

@thelostscribe: Yeah especially since I actually liked the show back in the 90's in addition to the games of course. Felt like Ryan Reynolds could've been sonic but meh, can't get everything you want

@cejay0813: That's true, I could hear Reynolds doing Sonic's voice. His snarkyness would match Sonic's attitude pretty well. Overall, looks like the movie could be a lot of fun at this point.

Kind of a shame they're capable of producing a beautiful version of Sonic's world only to send him to boring old Earth, but, yeah, that's definitely better.

Besides the re-design of Sonic himself (which looks awesome BTW) that trailer was just much better overall and actually makes me think this movie will turn out OK and be one of the better videogame-based movies.

I really felt for the artists behind the movie when I heard about the backlash from the first sonic the movie reveal. I personally thought it was a competent reimagining of sonic that made him look more like a mix of real and cartoon / CGI. I was kind of shocked that a redesign was announced, and it seemed like another nail in creativity’s coffin. That said, my inner child prefers the redesign. I was going to watch the movie anyways, so, good on them?

This remains a movie otherwise created by people who thought that design was ok. I'm sure someone that thought it was okay for Sonic to look like that also isn't going to be the most in touch with what the rest of a movie about him should be.

The 'now they are in our world' thing is always such a cheap copout, as live action is mostly cheaper than full CGI or other effects. This is why the Masters of the Universe movie from the 80s teleported them to earth, and has been a trend including the Mario movie all the way up to the live action Smurf movies of recent years.

I want to see Sonic running around the emerald zone and going through a story similar to those in his games, not 'what if we found a way to shoot more live action and attach big name live actors to it'.

@Tekarukite: I'm not that into Sonic, aside from the first few games. I'm not attached to him as a character much but that first trailer did look bad. I'm just pointing out that I dislike when they take a property that had nothing to do with a place where Earth even exists like we know it, and set it in our reality and time. It's so they can build less sets and attach big name actors, and doesn't serve the property best. The new trailer does look more like how I remember Sonic in appearance and the scenes, but a fully CGI one like they're doing with Mario would have made the most sense. I don't have any real emotional investment, I just don't like the trend of sending them to our world when adapting things. Or rather my emotional investment is less with Sonic and more with how movies are made. Even Detective Pikachu was set in a world more like the one out of Pokemon, as if they'd always existed. Pikachu didn't go through a worm hole and land in Adam Sandler's apartment. I'd like to see more like that.

@rawkstar007: I'm not sure where you detected anger there. It's just facts, and indeed a copout to take something set in another world and put it in ours to make the movie cheaper. I don't have any extreme attachment to Sonic that's gonna cause any anger in me, just commenting on the thread. I do love some Sonic games, but I'm not passionate about his representation in a movie (though I do agree the previous design was scary).

However, it is true that the people that approved this design also approved the rest of the movie, so there's likely other things that should have been changed just as much to please fans.

BTW not a fan of Skittles, unless you're trying to destroy my blood sugar. If anything, blood sugar imbalance makes me cranky, not a Sonic movie.

This looks a lot better just wonder how much it will be worth it in the long run. My guess is that this wasnt a cheap fix and I wonder if Sonic looking better will actually make a difference in movie profits. Will all the people that were complaining about the original design now go see the movie or will they still not see the movie?

Speaking for myself, I still don't plan on seeing the movie but at least if I do eventually watch the movie Sonic's design will be more appealing.

To me sonic design always has been minimalistic, like in the old games, with intense colors but few visible features. When I look at the detail of the fur I don't quite like it, but I'm probably biased from my old school 16 bit era.

This improvement is a big one, the previous one looked like a midget in a bad custome.

I'll be damned, they listened. This design is alright.

I expect the writing to still be brilliantly terrible, yet I'll pay $10 to watch another epic videogame movie.

Great to see more of the Gameworld here too. Sonic on Earth is silly.

I find it funny that these studios want to capitalize on people's nostalgia but then try and be cute by "reimagining" a classic character. It's good they fixed it, but what were they thinking in the first place? This must have cost them a millions in labor and logistics.

Not only does the redesign look immeasurably better, the actual trailer cut doesn't paint the movie as a steaming pile. Ramones are def a better fit than gangster's paradise as well...
