Sony Boss Jim Ryan Says PlayStation 5 Production Is "Ramping Up Over The Summer"

The head of Sony Interactive Entertainment expects the overwhelming demand for the console to balance out in the second half of 2021.

41 Comments

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan has acknowledged the PlayStation 5's continued absence from store shelves, laying out his plans to fix the shortage as the year progresses.

In an interview with Wired about the new console--which has sold 7.8 million units since March 31 despite the shortage--Ryan spoke about the steps being taken to mitigate the shortfall. "We’re working as hard as we can to ameliorate that situation," Ryan says. "We see production ramping up over the summer and certainly into the second half of the year, and we would hope to see some sort of return to normality in terms of the balance between supply and demand during that period."

Now Playing: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart - The Final Preview

The lack of PlayStation 5s on the market has not hurt the console's performance when compared to its predecessor, however. The Wired article mentions that according to Sony, from the November launch to the end of March, PS5 owners have spent 81 percent more time on the console than early PS4 owners did during its first months on the market in 2013-2014. Sony also notes an 11 percent rise in software sales between the PS5 and PS4 in that same period of time.

The PlayStation 5's momentum will only continue with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart launching on June 11 and both Horizon Forbidden West and the next God of War also on the way. In fact, PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst has confirmed 25 first-party PS5 games are in development, with around half of them being entirely new IP.

Now that the CDC has laxed out the covid rules, companies should have no excuse to start selling more stock in stores. We will see what happens, but will seem fishy if they dont.

That's nice but they need to ramp up patching out the CMOS Time issue that will render the PS5 and PS4 completely useless. It will also make all digital games on the PS3 completely unplayable!

Then they need to make the PS5 fully backwards compatible with PS1, PS2, and PS3 games (PSP and Vita would be nice)

Until Jim Ryan comes out and apologies for his "old games" statements gamers should have 0 respect for him. Guys like that are a cancer in the games industry. He's no better than an an EA or Activision Exec. In fact he's a million times worse!!!

@dragonsama: because it's not a common occurrence or a known issue to gamers. That's a what if the battery fails which they normally don't. Other issues are more likely to happen than a failed battery.

@pcps4xb: other issues can be repaired with a part and the console would be workable again.

Replacing the CMOS battery in the PS5, PS4 and PS3 does nothing to fix the issue in the eventuality of Sony taking the servers for those systems down. If the system cannot verify the time to Sony’s server the the console is rendered useless.

It’s a massive design flaw in the software of those systems and should be addressed and patched out.

@dragonsama: would be a massive design flaw if it's a known or a common issue. The issue is pretty much unheard of and if or when it does happen, 10 or more years probably, people won't go and fixing an old console so 1 they already probably have the next gen or 2 like many other issues we'll purchase a new console if it fails. The whole CMOS battery thing is "IF" it fails, this or that would happen... But it doesn't happen and it's not a known issue with PS3,4 or 5.

@rodoxthedark: And there will be lots of people with Discs they can't use because of an extremely poor design choice by Sony. This is an Extremely serious problem!!!!

I say this as a person who still has tons of cartridges and discs on shelves from about every generation of gaming.

of course it is !!

Lets create more demand for a product no one can held hold of already cos it'll be the holiday period when every kid is off school.

Why isn't it "ramping up" already ??

@itchyflop:

it's not as easy as turning up a dial unfortunately. Production runs in various factories making different components have to be booked in advance. Many factories have a backlog to catch up on due to the pandemic and it's not like they make stuff JUST for Sony, far from it sot hey have to wait in line.

Sony are said to be changing the SoC to a 6nm design to take the pressure off the 7nm production line but again this still has to be booked in advance.

@analgrin:

thanks man that's informative and interesting (no sarcasm), you know this how?

with respect why haven't Sony this already, i understand there s a pandemic, however im sure the components are made where the pandemic is higher than say Europe, so unless they've moved production (costing money, so doubtful) or they are manufacturing the ps5 in a now "lifted" pandemic status area i cannot see why Sony haven't "ramped up" production already, its not like the demand hasn't been high enough already?, also i heard there is a shortage of chips?

Its been 6 months plus now of ps5 release, i just find it all coincidental and rightly so, a strategic marketing ploy to create the on going demand when Sony know the stock is either scalped or difficult for customers to get one through normal avenues.

I dunno if Microsoft have had similar issues with stocks and pandemic economic crashes, maybe you could satisfy my curiosity here ?

thanks :)

@itchyflop:

I just watch a lot of tech videos on YT and read lots of tech articles that have explained why there's a shortage and there's been lots of articles recently about Sony switching to 6nm SoC from 7nm to help alleviate some of the manufacturing strain. And yeah many electronic devices have also been hit not just PS5. Nvidia RTX 3000 series gfx cards are still nowhere to be seen on websites or store shelves despite releasing 2 months BEFORE PS5. Same with Ryzen 9 chips and I guess Intel too. Someone I work with has been trying to get a Series X and is having trouble so yeah xbox are also having issues.

On top of all that demand is way higher than last gen. I mean the fact PS5 has sold faster than PS4 did in the same timescale shows it's not just the fact there's component shortages but also much higher demand than before. They've made more PS5's than they did PS4's 6 months after release and that's during a pandemic so they have ramped up production but they're still selling out faster than they can make them. Likely because people have been stuck indoors, unable to socialize physically, with nothing to do so they want new tech to pass the time.

I just looked at one of the channels I frequent a lot, Linus Tech Tips, to try and refresh my memory. He goes into good detail about why there's a shortage. . mostly in PC space but he does mention consoles. Apparently there's only 2 companies in the entire world that are producing semiconductors for all the electronics industry. And these days everyday items are becoming smart and need chips inside. TV's, Cars, Phones, even refrigerators now are becoming "smart" all those chips come from the same 2 places and they're struggling to keep up with demand.

For more details have a look at this video where he gives an informed explanation as to what is going on right now.

https://youtu.be/3A4yk-P5ukY

and google "PS5 6nm" or "PS5 redesign" to find articles about the change Sony are planning to help improve production.

@analgrin: cool

thanks bro

Id heard about Sony redesigning the ps5.

Fingers crossed for the holidays and kids then :)

I'm fortunate to have gotten one on day one, however it has come with some issues, im still having rest mode faults, and iv turned it off for now so it doesn't "brick" my ps5.

I have a series s but wanted an X too (naturally) however right now ive got too many games to play!!

And with what you've commented i probably am better waiting anyway.

have a great weekend :P

EDIT : see PCPS4XB comment below, it is a good point.

@itchyflop:

Seems I was lucky as I got a PS5 day one as well, well day 2 after Amazon delayed it slightly.

I too had issues with it. It would keep shutting down randomly in the middle of gaming sessions and while just sitting on the home screen. Wasn't too bad for the first couple of days but it slowly got worse and worse until I was constantly having to repair the OS on start up and even had to re-install it from USB stick at one point.

I sent if off a couple of weeks before Christmas thinking I wouldn't get it back until the new year. But I had a brand new PS5 at more door a week later. I guess they have to put some aside for warranty replacements too.

I've not experienced any problems since. I often use rest mode as my internet is slow so I leave it over night downloading. I've read about some having problems though.

oh wow that's pretty severe!!

Over all im really pleased with it, over the weekend i tried to rest mode and Returnal and it worked ok.

yeah ide leave mine on overnight to do the massive updates (like cyberpunk) and it would be off in the morning.

Its come on randomly after too like when im at work and ive gotten home to find it on!!

It seems to have settled now with minor errors.

going off topic slightly.....

To be honest im looking forward to bio mutant on ps4 (25th this month), Resi village is good too if a little short, the arcade mode is a blast however.

I'm hoping the former will have ps5 upgrade, it looks very good.

It takes two has surprised me aswell, very well written and a blast !!

@itchyflop: they said before release the ps5 will be in very limited stock due to covid, I think it’s due to the shortage of semiconductors, but all the components seems to be short, Nintendo said that switch stock will be running low soon, and it’s the same with Xbox

Covid is everywhere so there arnt factories in low covid areas

@rodoxthedark: or is it clever marketing to create demand?

see PCPS4XB below and i kinda lean towards that point, if the world is indeed low on components how can it be already outselling previous gen?

Or is it because of this, they are now low on components?

Either way have a great weekend :P

@pcps4xb: @pcps4xb: but most people won’t want a PS4 anymore as the ps5 is out. They will have built a certain number of ps5s before all the shortages and now they can’t build as many due to shortages, I’m not saying scalpers aren’t a massive problem, but I don’t think they will be purposely causing a shortage to cause hysteria, this comment comes every gen, but what company is going to hold back potential sales and risk people buying from a rival instead, they will want as many ps5s available as possible because it will sell as many that are available

@rodoxthedark: what I meant was ps5 sales first 6 months vs PS4 first 6 months when it released. I do agree with you but my point is it's not really that limited since by March they already sold 8 million.

Great news though for those still looking!

@thecupidstunts: Shortages will, but Sony will be able to increase production over what they have now, will that even come close to meeting demands.... not at all. Simply, too few raw materials being fought over by groups like, Ford, Aircraft, Countries, Militaries, Apple!! that have way more buying power then a video game console that is sold heavily subsidized in the first place.

Sony as an consumer electronics manufacturer may be closing out lines, closing out brands, and moving/ allocating good to the PS line.

@dragoonmike: They may be able to increase production over their numbers now.... will it meet demand,.... lol hardly. There has been news that Sony as a consumer electronics manufacturer may be able to close out lines, brands, and reallocate or move more else where to help with the PS line.

But, as far as production goes, Sony has been able to produce more consoles per month then they ever were able to, any console from ps1 -ps4 this gen. But demand has never been higher, and there is just not enough raw goods in the pipeline for any kind of large production increase over their current numbers.

The above is positive spin.
