Sony Comments On Deal To Bring MLB The Show 21 To Xbox And Game Pass

It was Major League Baseball's decision to expand the franchise to new platforms outside of PlayStation, the publisher says.

A spokesperson for PlayStation has clarified part of the reason why the company is bringing its MLB The Show 21 to Xbox and Game Pass. This representative told Inverse that it was all about expanding the appeal and reach of the MLB The Show series. It was MLB's decision to do this, the spokesperson said.

"As part of the goal for this year's game, MLB decided to bring the franchise to more players and baseball fans," a PlayStation representative told the site. "This decision provides a unique opportunity to further establish MLB The Show as the premier brand for baseball video games."

According to Inverse, the decision to bring MLB The Show 21 to Xbox and Game Pass specifically "came straight from MLB."

Asked about the deal to bring MLB The Show 21 to Game Pass, a spokesperson for Microsoft said, "We curate the library with the diversity of our 18 million members in mind." Major League Baseball, however, did not respond to Inverse's request for comment.

MLB The Show 21 is the first PlayStation-published game to come to Xbox. Thanks to Game Pass, subscribers on Xbox and the cloud can play MLB The Show 21 as part of their monthly subscription, while people on Sony's own PlayStation hardware must pay $70 for it.

Xbox Game Pass had 18 million subscribers by Microsoft's latest count, and launching MLB The Show on Xbox opens up the game to a much larger audience than PlayStation alone.

MLB The Show 21 launches on April 20 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. The more expensive collector's editions unlock four days early, starting April 16.

For more on the game, check out GameSpot's MLB The Show 21 preorder guide.

Can't believe this is on Game Pass right away. I was excited enough to play it on the Series X. Now I don't even have to buy it.

This was obviously MLB saying.... Port it to Xbox, you get extra cash for more copies sold, or we take the license from you.

Sony doesn't have an exclusive contract. 2K Sports does, but 1st parties were free to make an MLB game if they chose. Being 2K ditched the game, and Sony is the only one making a real baseball game, this was obviously the terms if they wanted to use the license.

Sony is such a prick when it comes to cross platform. They're not open to it at all, and just only recently realized they could make more money by porting to the PC.

MLB screwed Sony. If I was Sony I wouldn’t make anymore The Show games unless MLB renegotiates the terms of the contract.

MLB obviously wanted cross platform. However I think there is a contract lawyer at Sony who is in hot water. As the developer and publisher on the Playstation side there should have been a deal in place with MLB that they could not bring it to a competing subscription service unless there was a deal in place to put it on a Playstation subscription service as well. There are two choices, Sony saw the loophole where their users could get it on Game Pass and have to buy it on Playstation, and didn't care OR they didn't see it. Either way not a good look

MLB is fully in control of the situation. They weren't going to allow Sony to renew the license if it didn't go multiplatform. In addition, Sony is not the publisher for this game on Xbox (and Switch and in the future, PC). MLB is actually the publisher which means MLB is the one reaping the profits while Sony only got developer fees. Which also means Microsoft negotiated with MLB to put it in Game Pass.

So on many levels, Sony got royally screwed. They're not profiting from it being on Game Pass (MLB is), they're having one of their treasures go to their rival, and they're being undercut where it's essentially free for Xbox gamers and Playstation gamers have to pay $60-100 for it.

And because GP users get a discount on game purchases (and this discount stacks on any other sale), GP users will be able to buy the game cheaper than Playstation gamers as well as be able to play it for free until the price of the game drops. So if there's a summer sale where the game is $60 instead of normally $70, then a GP gamer gets a discount off that $60 instead of off that $70. Essentially, an Xbox gamer gets to play the game longer than a Playstation gamer and pay less for it.

That, to me, looks like another step for Microsoft to leave the Hardware business.

Sony will, eventually, get MS Gamepass and it will be a beautiful day.

Either that, or it's a counterpoint to guarantee bethesda stuff on Playstation.

@dirtydyk: Thank you for sharing your deepest desires.

Microsoft is not going to bow out of the hardware business. The only reason they or any other videogame hardware manufacturer makes consoles is as a pathway to sell games & services and collect our money. To stop making XBox would immediately take away their most dedicated conduit to do so.

@theduckofdeath: Hardware trades at a loss. Software is where they make money.

With the expansion of Gamepass and broadband availability increasing exponentially all over the world, this could well signify the end of their hardware run as we know it.

Game makers aren't keen on physical media either, so the hardware will mean less and less as the years go by.

Sony had the right idea with the PlayStation TV being able to play PSNow. They just didn't plan it properly. PSNow wasn't worth the price.

That's just me. We'll see who's right in 2 generations.

@dirtydyk: Hardware is the endpoint of the delivery mechanism. You cut yourself off from tens of millions of customers and billions of potential customers if you don't have the pathway in place. It is in place and effective -- they are not going to pull the rug out from under themselves prematurely.

Not everyone has adequate internet, or would want to play on a phone, or put up with lag, or compromise any other part of the experience by removing a dedicated hardware renderer like a console or PC. Microsoft has made a huge monetary and engineering investment in refining their hardware platform.

The example Blockbuster or Gamefly is invalid because that is just media delivery. Storage. The media has to be rendered in a performant manner. Amazon has a Prime Video website, and they are multiple FireStick models, Fire Cube, and Fire tablets. One day they might be able to beam TV into a person's mind. That doesn't mean we toss TVs out the window because 50k people get the implant.

@dirtydyk: You know MS not going to bow out and why should they as they are making bank all around even if Sony's PS 5 is ahead. All MS has to do is maintain and even if they bow out it would not break MS itself but can the same be said for Sony? But anyway I see your point but you know MS not going to do it.

@lonewolf1044: Can Sony survive without PlayStation? Absolutely. No single business segment is detrimental to the success of their business.

As example: While Playstation may account for 27% of its revenue, the 5th largest segment of their business - semiconductors - is the most profitable and what they mostly operate on (your cell phones and your digital cameras all likely have Sony image sensors in them). There's how many more cellphones and digital cameras in the world compared to PlayStations? Billions upon billions.

I’ have had the last six or so iterations of this great game. I am also a long time baseball fan and I think it’s good for the sport and the video game. The more playing the better long term.

@dmblum1799: I agree 100%. Baseball isn't as big of a seller as Madden or Fifa. It's more of a niche game. The more exposure, the longer the best baseball game ever can keep going.

While I am happy for Xbox owners Sony has lost all credibility with gamers.

Just look at what they are doing to the PS3,PSVita and PSP store closing them down and giving you no way to play those games on your newer consoles it's completely unacceptable.

Until Sony makes their entire catalog of games playable on PS5 gamers should #BoycottPlaystation

I'm not saying not to play games you already have but don't buy anything from them , no digital games, no dlc nothing.

@dragonsama: Microsoft didn't make every game available. I have over 200 Xbox Live Arcade games I can't access unless I play them on the 360. 99% of XBLA games weren't ported and they're all digital games.

@zmanbarzel: So you are perfectly ok with Sony not allowing players to purchase games on their system of choice nor giving them an option to play those games on newer hardware?

Honestly that is horrible of Sony to do and they need to make it where players can purchase and play games on older PS systems on the newer hardware. That's why #BoycottPlaystation is important.

Also #BoycottPlaystation is not about telling players not to play games they already own. They can do that all they want. It's about not purchasing anything new from Sony until they make the catalog available on their current hardware.

Once they do that then feel free to buy new games.

@dragonsama: I own PS5 and XSX. Both are fine. I've owed every Playstation iteration aside from the portables and personally, I couldn't care less about playing old games.

So, it's simply a matter of opinion. All that's happening with the Vita PS store... that's another topic entirely.

BC on Series X is cool - but literally it goes "Oh damn, Skyrim at 60hz? I'll download it, why not.... Yep, it's Skyrim with more frames, NEXT," for me.

FInally, boycott? IIRC BC, beyond PS4 was never touted as a feature Sony were pursuing. I could comprehend a boycott had Sony been marketing full back compat, but it was clear to me that this wasn't happening.

"...feel free to buy new games." Can we REALLY? Are we ALLOWED!?!

@dragonsama: "not allowing players to purchase games on their system of choice"

The PS3 game I wanted to buy I've bought and played on PS3. Likewise, PS Vita and PSP games on the Vita. Maybe it's because I'm very likely to be (much) older than you, but backwards compatibility has been a thing for only a very small part of my life playing games. It's a nice-in-theory idea, but I'm not going to let the lack of it affect my life going forward.

"Also #BoycottPlaystation is not about telling players not to play games they already own...It's about not purchasing anything new from Sony until they make the catalog available on their current hardware."

Again: yeah, no thanks. I don't have a PS5, but that's purely from lack of availability, not any "boycott." When I finally find one I can buy either online or at a physical store, you can bet it'll be mine.

Why would launching the game on more platforms impact Sony's credibility? The game is still on PlayStation, developed by the same team as previous iterations. This doesn't impact PlayStation owners in any way.

Did anyone think that Sony did this for the fun of it? Of course it was an MLB decision.

Regardless, it's good that more people will have the opportunity to play this series.

Crazy time we're living in where Sony was practically forced to make a game for Xbox. In the long run, it will probably just make them more money. But I'm sure they weren't thrilled by the deal.

@ebola9717: It is all about the Benjamins and why not let it come to Xbox, Both Sony and MS is making money off each other. MS is honoring any contracts made prior to MS buying Bethesda and Sony is going to pay MS now that they hold the contracts. So it balances out and there is enough money out there where both can make money.

@ebola9717: Its an official Baseball game with official licenses for players and leagues. Why the **** should Sony have the exclusive rights for an official Baseball game? The answer is actually baseball isn't big and doesn't' sell as well as other sports franchises so MLB were able to make deals with Sony. But MLB now think it can grow bigger

Sony can just give up the license if they don't like it. They don't own baseball.
