Sony comments on God of War dev layoffs and what they mean for the studio

“Not every title can be a success.”

Sony has said that the recent layoffs at God of War developer Sony Santa Monica is the result of a high profile project and the studio in general needing a “reboot.”

Speaking with IGN, head of internal software development for the PlayStation brand Scott Rohde didn't say what projects the studio is still working on, only that “sometimes, a project needs a reboot. So that’s what we’re doing overall with the titles we’re working on there, and the studio itself.”

Rhode again did not confirm that any in-development game had been canceled, but said that “There’s not a single business on the planet where every single project that is started is a success.”

Rhode confirmed that even after the layoffs, the studio still employs around 200 people.

As to when and what we’ll see from Santa Monica next, Rhode said we’ll just have to be patient and wait.

The studio opened in 1999 and rose to prominence after creating the original God of War. The last game the studio launched was God of War: Ascension. We know that it is currently collaborating with developer Ready at Dawn on the PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'd have to agree with both Def-Trex and Spartan-1657. The first chapter or so is very quick-time heavy, but the game that follows is easily the best experience of the entire series.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The first two are good adventure games but have below average combat. III and Ghost improved all this for the better. It did sacrifice the story alot though, III I mean :)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Don't listen to Def-Trex. God of War 3 is by far the best in the series. The others were incredible as well, but the third one is just beyond. They didn't ruin anything with QTE's in number 3.

@Def-Trex 1 & 2 are good action games. III was a reasonably decent slasher game. & as a long Njinja Gaiden/ DMC fan I prefer them to focus more on the combat. But to each his or her own :)

@Def-Trex @eternal_napalm How many moves and weapons did you unlock ?I won't spoil the game to you but you need to kill more enemies to upgrade the moves. This is completely different than casual QTE games when they give you all the moves when you carry the weapon.

The economy can be good or bad because in the game developing world, layoffs are just common practice I guess..........

<< LINK REMOVED >> I can understand layoffs here and there. Even a handful at a time. But I've seen far too many instances where parent companies lay off entire teams by multiples of 50. THAT, to me, is always a sad event, and my best to those looking for work. But those sound like managerial mistakes where the developer ends up paying for it. These are lives that are being messed with. How many times have we seen people hire someone for 6 months to get a push on development, only to let them go once the job is done. It's one thing if you know it's contractual going in, another when you might have spent thousands, changed residence, etc. to work on those projects. The parent companies don't seem to realize this.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I agree. I was hoping one day to be part of a great game developing studio but with all the news articles about layoffs here and layoffs there, my skepticism has gone up ten-fold. Unless I am the owner or founder/co-founder, it seems very difficult to hold a job in this type of medium.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I know, right? Bad to the frickin ass. Why can't other businesses take a hint and do likewise? Game studios actually employ at lot of social science behind those open floorplans. They promote interaction, creativity and inspiration. Nothing is as deadening to the senses as seeing a run of the mill farm of cubicles.

@aegis_kleais @carbone619 Open floor plan sure, but you don't really need a $50 million dollar building to achieve that...

Look at the architecture on display in that picture... the building is clearly beautiful and expensive... but probably not a great choice for a company (Sony) that has been experiencing serious financial woes!

I'd rather them retain all the talent than the fancy ass building...

I hope this doesn't have an influence on the quality of any products they were working on. If they have to bring on replacement workers who have not been with a project before the whole thing could result in inferior games. God of War is a beloved series and a system seller for the Playstation brand. Sony could use a good exclusive to appease all of those PS4 owners out there who bought a console based on what is coming down the pipeline. Good luck to all those who lost their jobs.

I just hope they are not rebooting GoW, I would love to know where they were heading after GoW3's cliffhanger.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I remember Jaffe's original intention back when he created the first game was to have Kratos destroy Olympus and then play all the other ancient religions (Norse, Egyptian, Japanese, etc.) off one another over the resulting power vacuum that would be created, thus explaining why religions of old are now mostly nothing more than myths.

Personally I think that'd be awesome.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Why not both?! A game set after the events of GoW 3, but in a completely different era, with some new mechanics, maybe something in the modern era? They kind of hinted at this before:

Not likely, but I can dream.

<< LINK REMOVED >> ^This. And given how the God of War franchise hasn't been around that long, and the last release was very recent, a reboot would be as silly as the concept of when Devil May Cry got a reboot.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> They don't need a reboot for that. Remember how it was stated that Athena was called by a higher power when she died and came back in GoW3 ? Kratos could be called by that same higher power to hunt down and destroy other pantheon of gods, Norse, Egyptian, whatever, just as long as Kratos has more gods blood to spill :)

<< LINK REMOVED >> Well yeah, they could take it somewhere else, but I mean if they try and remake Kratos' story it seems like a waste of time. There's more they can do with Kratos rather than re-doing what has already been told.
