Sony details free PlayStation App with remote download support

The upcoming PlayStation App will be free on iOS and Android, Sony has said, and will allow users to purchase games and have them automatically begin downloading on their PlayStation 4.

In an interview on the European PlayStation Blog, Sony worldwide studios head Shuhei Yoshida discussed the new PlayStation App, which Sony unveiled during TGS 2013.

The PlayStation App allows users to log in to their PlayStation Network account and make use of the console's social features, such as viewing game streams, sending voice and text messages, and receiving invitations to multiplayer games.

It can also be used for second screen gaming, Sony has said, with Knack, Driveclub, and Watch Dogs all supporting the app this year.

"Smaller developers can use PlayStation App to connect to PS4 and load an application," added Yoshida, "like drawing software for example, so that you don't have to download and install a specific app on your smartphone. It's open to all PS4 developers to use."

The PlayStation 4 is launching on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

I would be happy just to have an app that I can use to add friends while I'm out and about. Having folks trying to remember their usernames and write them on scraps of paper is awkward.

Smartphones - Android, Sony custom Android, Firefox, custom Steam OS (amazon fire OS)

Tablets - Android, Linux Ubuntu, chrome, and Steam OS Firefox.

Same with PC's - Linux, Ubuntu, and steam OS.(full) Chrome OS.

@Sumpskildpadde They will probably have a web browser version as well. It may not have all the same features, but I think they would at least want people with any device to be able to use their web browser to buy and remotely install games.

Windows phone here as well. Also getting a Surface 2 when it comes out. It does suck when things like this APP dont pan out. But the surface 2 tablet is going to be sick.

People say this is going to be pointless, but with how big game sizes are going to be now, ex. KZ SF 50 gigs and Watch Dogs 20 gigs(pc version, but still probably this or close to it), being able to download something I see on sale when I'm at school or work will be cool so it's ready right when I'm home. Also being able to see the game invites and just messaging a buddy back saying you'll be on in 5 or so is cool too. Just more convenient to have that on your phone now. I know texting works for rl friends, but some people make online friends too and this is a cool way of messaging them in a texting manner to play.

ur fanboy colors is showing, everybody have a smartphone but not everybody would have a smart glass and the feature is impressive from a gamer point of view, if u don't like it well this is not the right article for u, the xbone have lots of article for u to read

@greenaj Why? The app looks nice. It's a MUST to be able to type messages from the app to text your friends in-game, and vise versa. Just think. If you are at home reading a book or wathever, and a friend send you a game invite, you'll see it directly on your phone so you can simply turn on the console and play, WAY better. Still, I agree for second screen gaming, it's pointless to me. But the app is way more than that.

@senjutsu I think the app looks childish. But I can already see messages and who's online with my smartglass app on my cell phone. I can also send them messages from my phone to their game console.

@Comatose71690 MS already announced SmartGlass will do the same thing for the One, Sony's just catching up in that regard. Yay. Besides, second screen gaming is dumb and has been ever since the Dreamcast.

@greenaj @Comatose71690 Well if both haven't actually implemented it into use then nobody is catching anyone. All I remember MS saying is that the smarglass will be able to pull up tips and tricks for stuck gamers and maps for certain games, no specifics on actual game controller use has been shown. But I agree, it will probably end up being useless on both consoles for most gamers.

I hope no one gets killed for these systems. I don't care what system you like, it's not worth killing an innocent soul for. Like that poor guy that got robbed of his GTA game, away from the store he bought it in (must've had the limited edition) I don't know why people don't remember to bring cab fare with them, & call for one outside the store! I know that sounds a little weird, but it's frustrating hearing people get killed for these systems, when they didn't have too! I think I'm getting nervous for everyone's safety ha-ha.. But seriously, It would be REALLY NICE if popular systems, can be sold without killing people. I'd like to think we've become more civilized..NOT WORSE! Just because you're in a long line with people, doesn't mean you can trust them. And I find that VERY sad. Glad I ordered my system online. *SIGH* Anyway...

@Faye_Tallity The cops will be at my local GameStop here in Tampa AND at Wal-Mart too for the midnight release of the PS4 on the night of Nov. 14th and until a lil' bit after 1am on Nov. 15th (I'm guessing like 11pm-1am or so will be the midnight release times for peeps to show up and pick up their consoles/games/etc.). But yeah, my buddy in lives in NY and says that they had a lot of problems like this in the city when the PS3 was released... ;-)

I hope Sony puts a lot of effort on this app's safety. It's a no brainer that someone will try to mod the app to allow for game downloads without paying for them. And that would suck.

@StonerDemon I'm sure Sony has a huge focus on security after the PSN was taken down because of hackers in the past. This app will have links to the ps store also so it will need to be very secure.

What about for the Windows Store? People with the Windows phone are left out of the picture (and that Sony laptops run Windows - it's just that they have to use some sort of application in order to run Android).
