Sony dropping online play for three PS3 games early next year

All online multiplayer services for MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 ending January 28, 2014.

Sony will pull the plug for online services for PlayStation 3 games MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 on January 28, 2014, the company announced today in a tweet from the PlayStation account.

No Caption Provided

"Advisory: Online multiplayer services for MAG, SOCOM Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 will be ending on 01/28/14," Sony said.

MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation require an Internet connection to play, meaning the first-person shooters won't work once the online services are removed. SOCOM 4, on the other hand, features an offline mode.

Sony was not immediately available to comment on whether or not it will continue to sell MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation even though they won't be playable.

MAG and SOCOM 4 developer Zipper Interactive was shut down last year.

Well it's been weeks since MAG died, The PS3 has been given away and my 4000 hours in the game a distant memory. The strange thing is when I look at YouTube vids of MAG I feel home sick ! If you , like me loved this game then you know how I feel. For years many said the game had died but you could usually get over 500 players on, even in the last months of the game after the end had been announced. There is no replacement for MAG .. COD ? A paintball game .. BattleField ? Just don't feel as good. So I'm now looking for a new consul to play but won't until something close to a MAG2 arrives ... Maybe nothing like it will be seen again.. Do the developers really want people buying games that will last them 4 years possibly more. No they want COD 1 then 2 then 3 add tedium . Might take up fishing. But to all you ex Sver, Raven & Valour ..... I salute you

Well, to be fair, MAG (teh halo killur) sucks, and Socom is for guys stuck in 2002. But lets all thank Sony for those dedicated servers you all brag about. I knew this day would come when they're done paying the bill for those servers and you're left with dead games.

Yikes, they're not wasting any time, are they? Think you could slow down there a little, Sony?

I mean okay, they're not exactly new games, and the developer of 2 of the 3 games doesn't exist anymore... But those are also the games without an offline mode. It's too bad that it seems the fans won't be able to play anymore or be given the tools to do so. :-\

I will say this, though: if you buy a game that only has multiplayer, you'll run into this problem eventually. But I wouldn't expect it to be so soon!

As much as I enjoyed MAG, there's definately not enough people playing it now to keep it going, hell if someone bought the game today and loaded it up, they'd be pissed off by how long it takes to get into some of the larger maps, even the smaller maps are taking longer than it's worth.

Everyone saying everything should have an offline mode, I'd just like to ask why? why take resources away from the game that was designed to be a fun multiplayer, it's just as bad as tacking multiplayer on to a single player game.

They should release the server software so gamers can run their own servers and keep these games going. But of course this will not happen because companies do not want gamers to play old games. They want to force gamers to buy and play the new stuff. This is one of the tactics they use to push people into spending more money on things instead of just playing the stuff they already have.

Thousands of gamers still play the old titles like Doom, Quake, Ghost Recon, etc. because they can set up and administrate the multiplayer servers on their own. All games should allow this capabilty imo. Give gamers the control over their own games. Let us run and create our own servers to play with our friends.

So, Sony is trying to go the way of the Xbone, and make people not want to buy their next console. I was all set to switch from Xbox 360 to PS4, but if Sony is just going to randomly turn off games, I guess I'll just skip the "next gen".

Why the hell are they doing this to a game with no single player? That's just destroying our products.

I personally really like MAG. Someone should make a petition for this.

Dear Sony,

Please implement patches for these games that allow players to setup their own servers. This way, the fans of the games can continue to play using their own servers.

In fact...

Dear Game Developers/Publishers

Every online game that you distribute should have an end-of-life plan that includes a patch that opens the game to run on community-ran servers.

Gamer's pay for and invest much of their lives into these games. Some people will keep the games alive for years after EOL and it gives a way for people of the future to remember and experience games from these generations of consoles.

This is why online only games are a terrible idea. Now there's going to be millions (or a couple hundred thousands, whatever) of copies of these games lying around that have absolutely no function. I guess they'll look nice sitting on a shelf, but that's about it.

I can't believe people are fine with this...paying 60 bucks for a game and then having sony decide when you have to stop playing.

If i wanted to just rent a game i'd go to blockbuster and pay 5 bucks.

Just because YOU don't play a particular game anymore doesn't mean it's worthless and obsolete. There's still probably countless tens of thousands of people who still play and would like to keep playing a game they bought

@sagejonathan Sorry to tell you this but though you may have loved the game, MAG was not a hit. None of the three games listed in the announcement were. I'm a huge Socom fan but Sony and the two studios associated with current gen Socom games (Zipper and Slant Six) really ran the franchise into the ground. I don't see any studio wanting to take on that fiscal risk. I'd keep my eyes peeled for H-Hour though. It sounds promising and might prove to be the spiritual revival of the Socom line, just not in name.

@horizonwriter @sagejonathan Actually I think it had over 500,000 sales. That is by no means bad to me. The community was there but towards the end of it's life cycle it's online community played other games. People will buy a MAG sequel if Sony does it right.

@sagejonathan @horizonwriter 500,000 in sales is actually pretty weak, especially for an online multiplayer game that's not charging for online play. It means that besides recouping development costs, the cost of maintaining servers constantly along with patches comes out of that as well and since it isn't being recouped via player subscriptions the well runs dry fast. Also don't mistake sales for community. Lots of times people will rush to buy a game, making the sales count climb, but will drop it soon after. I've seen the numbers on player logins. It's not impressive at all. It was decent towards the beginning but dropped off sharply. To put it's success into perspective the game was released in January 2010 and will be done January 2014, right at 4 years. Socom 2 was released November of 2003 and was finally shutdown August 2012, a little under 9 years.

This is one of the advantages of P2P and Xbox Live this gen. MP support for older games, if you have a good connection that is. IMO P2P as a backup should be standard in gaming. No reason why both can't live side by side, on every platform.

calm the hell down guys, if you still have mag then you probably played it enough, OR covered in dust. it's been worthless for the past...2 years. it's like complaining your item is now worth less than it did a year ago.

Sad news for MAG fans. I used to play it all the time. I haven't played it for a few weeks now because I play games in cycles. I thought it was a fantastic game and wished there had been more expansions and a sequel. I thought it was waaayyyy better than COD. My favorites are Battlefield 2142, still waiting on sequel for that, MAG, Bad Company2, Battlefield3, Brink, Killzone. Wish MAG had a single player. Guess I'd better go back to playing it while I can.
