Sony Holding Job Fair for Fable Developers

Every SCEE studio will have a representative at the job fair on Monday.

Following the news this week that Fable developer Lionhead Studios may be closing up shop, Sony has announced it will hold a job fair Guildford, UK--the city where Lionhead is located.

No Caption Provided

The PlayStation Jobs UK Twitter account made the announcement. The recruitment event will be held on Monday, March 14, and representatives from all of Sony's European studios will be in attendance. Developers can send a DM to the Twitter account to set up meetings.

Microsoft has not yet outright confirmed that Lionhead will close and is instead saying it is "in discussions" with the employees. This is likely because UK law requires employers to create a consultancy period of at least 30 days. During this, measures to avoid redundancies are to be explored. The period also gives those affected some time to search for new jobs.

While Lionhead's closure is not 100 percent confirmed at this stage, another Microsoft studio-- Denmark-based Press Play Studios (Kalimba, Max: The Curse of Brotherhood)--has been shuttered entirely.

Lionhead, a British studio founded by Peter Molyneux in 1996, has developed acclaimed titles in the Black & White and Fable series. It was acquired by Microsoft in 2006. Molyneux left Microsoft and Lionhead in March 2012.

With Fable Legends canceled and Lionhead appearing to be on the way out, the future of the Fable series is unclear.

Good on Sony, being out of a job is horrible when its not your choice. Nice to see a company taking interest.

Lol at people think hiring by social media is just for PR, it's actually probably the most efficient way for a tech company to get the word out that they are interested and it's better to do it early than late, I've seen companies say they are looking for new employees on pretty much anything, from Facebook to Youtube.

Fable legends has beautiful graphics and I was really excited for Fable 4, I hope MS can set up another studio for Lionhead and get them to continue with the Fable franchise

I was expecting people to over react to this. Hiring from social media is a normal day to day thing. So much ridiculous comments. I only found it stupid that MS did not shift their employees to other studios, feels like a mismanagement there.

Is this too much of an early move by Sony since Lionhead Studios technically hasn't closed yet? Microsoft could turn around and say "nah, we want them working on something else now."

@nabinator: I don't think it's too early at all. The Devs at Lionhead Studios are facing an uncertain future and if their staff can already secure other positions, I don't think they'd hesitate to do so, as opposed to hoping things will work out favorably with Microsoft. It's kinda like if your company was retrenching staff and had announced it beforehand, and you got another job offer, would you take it and avoid a possible catastrophe, or would you stick around and risk being retrenched, even though there's a chance you would not be? Most people would choose the path that offers the most guaranteed security.

Sony has stepped in during that time of uncertainty and I don't think they could have chosen a better time.

There are two things of note here that is important from the article above.

-During the first half of the 7th gen all consoles makers shed off many of their 1rst party developers, as the thought of the day was consoles were dead and social games like farmville or motion controlled games along with mobile would be the only future of the gaming industry. And all studios would be swallowed up by just a few large publishers like THQ and EA. Well none of that came to past and in 2014 MS and Sony invested tons of cash into first party developers - with 8th gen console selling more then anyone could have expected. Now we see that there are winners and losers and some developers are just not producing well enough.

- The second thing, MS is starting to contract their investments and cut out developers that have no viable product- meanwhile Sony continues to push on and pushing even more money toward studios, new and old. I think microsoft should have kept those first party developers funded... even if you plan to scrap a project, you need studios to pump out those first party games. Consider this a rebuilding year or generation - you may lose money now but if you do not invest in the present, then xbox will be weaker later on. Those UK studios may not have a strong product at this time, but to lose such strong talent and lose it to your competition is not a good move.

Sony, PR console. They don't need to publish this on twitter. If you are going to do something good, don't brag about it, nor shout it in every corner. Sony is such an hypocrite company.

@Aleperez75: Your comment makes no sense - if you want to acquire advanced talent in video game development then you use twitter and other social platforms..... then an ad in the help wanted section of the classifieds, behind the piggly wiggly ad.

A responsible headhunter for a company in first party development knows that the closing of some strong UK developers is also an opportunity. It is not like they can call Lionshead studio directly and ask, "who needs a job?".

The point here isnt a sony vs microsoft thing. No mater their reasons what maters is this. They are helping.

If you worked at lionhead. You would be freaking out. "Wth am i suposed to do now....what am i gona do...." and here apears a company wanting to help you. They can breath easier. At least for now

OUCH!!!

I'm sorry...you might love Sony or you might hate their guts...but you HAVE TO GIVE THEM CREDIT FOR THIS!!!

They just opened their doors to these people right after Microsoft tossed them aside. Picture all of the people working at Lionhead Studios that have families and were worried sick because they didn't know where their next pay check was coming from.

This is like when Gabe Newell gave a every developer at his conference a free Vive...except this is bigger because they just helped their families too.
