Sony, HP, and Philips Go Their Own Way
Ten companies move away from Matsushita-backed DVD-RAM deal.
Sony, Hewlett-Packard, and Philips Electronics NV are abandoning a Matsushita-backed deal among ten electronics companies and are developing their own format for recordable video discs, or DVD-RAM.
According to reports from Bloomberg News, the three companies, led by Sony, want to develop a disc that will hold 3 GB of data per side. The deal that was signed in April only calls for 2.6 GB.
